Football Australia CEO James Johnson highlighted the significance of staging the tournament said via press release: “Hosting the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 offers a golden opportunity to continue the dynamic growth and popularity of women’s football in Australia,” he said. “Last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup laid a robust foundation, and we are eager to build upon this legacy to further enhance our football landscape both nationally and regionally.” Johnson underlines the power of government backing. “The backing from all levels of government is crucial as we tackle the surge in participation and the urgent need for improved facilities, this support is essential to maintain the momentum and ensure the continuous development of the sport across this country,” he added via media release. “The Federal Government’s ‘Play Our Way’ Grants program is a welcomed initiative to address the community facilities gap.” The achievements of Australian national teams, such as the Subway Socceroos and CommBank Matildas, have spurred a nationwide surge in football involvement. There was a notable 12% rise in 2023, and an impressive 20% increase has already been observed in 2024. FC Bayern München signing Nestory Irankunda has had a successful individual season to farewell Adelaide United Football Club and their fans . We can see his attacking value (1.05) is way above average and more than compensates for his negative defensive value (-0.19). As an attacking midfielder (AM), 0.41 is also on the higher side. Beyond scoring, he has begun to facilitate a lot more. His success rate of finding a killer pass is quite high and if he can increase his volume of playing that final ball it will make him that much more dangerous to defences. At 0.73, his WR or actions per minute is around average just as his successful actions per minute is (SWR). A lot more to come from this young player. He loves the ball at his feet and taking on defenders before rifling in a powerful shot to test the keeper. If he can find more balance between shooting and playing a pass, he will be even more of a handful for defenders. He has played out wide a fair amount even though crossing is at this stage a weakness of his. A more central role or cutting in from out wide will yield more success for him so it’ll be on defenders to keep him wide. He puts in effort on defending and has some success but frustration and over-exuberance can occasionally see him give up fouls and miss tackles. Overall, a very dangerous attacking option

It was a pleasure to be invited to speak at the inaugural 2024 Football Queensland Convention in Brisbane this past weekend. Other speakers included Ross Bernstein, CSP, CPAE, GSF Catherine Clark GAICD Fabio R. Serpiello and Michael Connelly to name a few. During the recent Queensland State Election, Football was at the forefront of many conversations with candidates at more than 90 seats across the state as a result of Football Queensland's #EQUALISER election campaign. The convention presented a timely opportunity only one week post election to discuss how Football faired. Here are some headline numbers: -1st out of all sports in total number of projects committed to by candidates, and the winning party (LNP) - Football has seen its successful election commitments total value ($) jump by 232% since 2020! - The average value ($) of each successful commitment has grown 264% since 2020. Football showed through the campaign that together we are stronger, and both singular and collectively we have an impactful and important story to tell through not only a spoken narrative but also the data behind the game. Quantitative data can present a compelling backdrop and help differentiate you from the noise, adding objective validity to your 'ask'. Credit goes to our team at Football Queensland and members of clubs all across our state for working together to deliver an #EQUALISER for the world game. To thrive (and survive), sports must look beyond the sons and daughters of former players. Australia’s identity is increasingly defined by its multiculturalism, and the next generation will be even more diverse. As our population evolves, sports organisations must engage with multicultural communities, not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it is a strategic imperative. To survive and then thrive, we must look beyond the children of former players. For sports to flourish, they need to nurture talent from all backgrounds, ensuring that everyone has a place in sport. Embracing our nation’s rich diversity will be crucial for the continued success of sports. To support an understanding of multicultural communities, the ASC, led by Dana Assenheim, Adam Cassidy and Nader Daher, and supported by the The LOTE Agency, has developed a presentation on the Changing Face of Australia. This presentation provides valuable insights and information that is a must read for all sports administrators.

I was pleasantly surprised to read about the impact of the Australian Open on the Victoria Economy. According to SportsPro, the Tennis Grand Slam has contributed AUS$3.14bn in economic benefits to Australian state over the past decade. Some of the other impact include: 🏆 The number of full-time jobs generated by the tournament increased 23.48 per cent to record 2,351 🏆 Visitors to Melbourne increased 7.34 per cent in 2024 🏆 The average daily spend per visitor was AUS$308 (US$205), up 6.2 per cent on last year and up 47.8 per cent on the 2020 pre-pandemic Australian Open This is so inspiring on many levels. 1️⃣ It shows that sports should always serve the community not just the organisers 2️⃣ Locals should always benefit even in global spectacles - 32% of all Australian Open attendees were locals, 34.1 per cent were from intrastate and interstate, and 9.58 per cent came from overseas 3️⃣ Thriving sports organisations means thriving communities, if done right Check out this incredible story here 👇

My view on the Socceroos' performance and the Australian football culture. The Socceroos, has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years. While the team has shown flashes of brilliance on the international stage, there is a commonly held belief among fans and analysts that the Socceroos lack creativity and fail to utilize their midfielders effectively. Many attribute these shortcomings to a cultural problem within Australian soccer. One of the main issues often cited by critics is the lack of creativity in the Socceroos' style of play. The team is often criticized for its direct and physical approach, with a heavy emphasis on long balls and set-piece plays. This one-dimensional playing style is believed to stifle the team's ability to build attacks from the midfield and create scoring opportunities through intricate passing and movement. Another common complaint is the underutilization of talented midfielders in the Socceroos squad. Australia has produced several top-quality midfielders over the years, yet these players often seem lost or marginalized in the team's tactics. The failure to integrate midfielders into the game plan effectively has led to a disjointed and uncoordinated style of play that lacks fluidity and creativity. For Arena Football, the 3rd time is not the charm. The current troubles of the #ArenaFootballLeague (AFL) can be traced to key factors contributing to the AFL's precarious situation. If we learn anything, it is the importance of a strategic and focused business model cannot be overstated ☀ Financial Mismanagement and Payment Issues: Several teams reported severe financial issues, leading to teams halting operations mid-season. ☀ Leadership and Communication Failures: The league's commissioner, Lee Hutton, has been criticized for availability and lack of communication has exacerbated the financial and operational problems ☀ Operational Disruptions and Unstable Infrastructure: The AFL has experienced several logistical issues impacting the league's ability to maintain a professional environment ☀ Expansion and Team Viability: The rapid expansion to 16 teams for the 2024 season overextended the league's resources, while some franchises lacked proper organizational backing complicating the league's stability​. The AFL's history of financial instability, a 2009 bankruptcy filing and ceasing operations in 2019 contributed to a fragile foundation of poor planning. Strong business practices and fiscal management are critical to the success of individual teams and the overall health and sustainability of the league. Thought I'd show you some of what we've been up to in October. Futsal can be a weird one for stats. In four games, our men's team scored 23 goals, and in one game, our women's team scored 19. This sport is full of ups and downs, and the end-to-end nature of the game means you can be punished instantaneously. I suppose this is what makes futsal such a good spectator sport, in that it's unpredictable and plenty of goals can be scored, despite the game state. It's also what makes it a useful donor sport for football, in that every mistake is punished. Football is a lot more forgiving, and allows players to slack off, due to the large pitches and number of players. There's plenty of others to bail you out in football, and there's often a less obvious link between actions and consequences.
