Watching this weekend’s Olympic 100m had me drawing worrying comparisons to the UK job market. This pic is not from an isolated LinkedIn ad, it’s a trend…
Over 100 applicants in 3 hours!??!? That’s lighting fast clicking (regardless of whether it’s using LI’s ‘Easy Apply’ feature or not!)
I’m pretty confident that any hiring manager that receives 100+ CVs is going to ignore anything after 20/30, regardless of when they come in. (Happy to be corrected if wrong)
This suggests that you not only have to be (over) qualified, have multiple years of experience in that specific role, show obsessive levels of commitment to your sector and stand-out via other means of “social branding”…but now need to be clairvoyant to know when any relevant jobs are being posted and be able to apply to them faster than Julien Alfred and Noah Lyles get from one side of the track to the other 🏃♀️🏃♂️
My thoughts are with anyone job hunting atm! 😰

Your comeback is a matter of time
Lessons about good sportsmanship apply throughout life, especially when it comes to your career.
You have the right to express your disappointment after not getting a job you interviewed for. This happens to everyone. But, much like an athlete who uses a defeat to motivate them to their next triumph, a rejection can be the foundation for your next great career opportunity.
In 2008, the Big Ten Indoor Track Championship in Minneapolis, USA saw an extraordinary display of resilience and determination from Heather Dorniden. Dorniden, a senior track and field athlete, was competing in the women’s 600-meter race, which was expected to be a close contest between the top runners. What happened during the race, however, was beyond anyone’s imagination. As all runners approached the final two laps, Dorniden found herself boxed in by the other runners and stumbled, falling to the ground. With just a few meters left to go, she dug deep and found the energy to surge ahead of the others. In an amazing display of willpower, Dorniden crossed the finish line in first place, winning the race.
Be ready to play the long game. Searching a job is also a job. Think about the tools that will help you increase your base of loyal employers. Here is a list of just some lifehacks:
- make a list of companies you will apply to;
- study their requirements for open vacancies;
- create a video resume that will help you stand out from all the candidates;
- don’t give up - after all, you understand that finding a job is a temporary process that you need to go through.
Being prepared you will simply pass it easier and faster! Good luck!
