Google has so many talented software engineers. They’re literally the 1% (& sometimes I feel like I will never come close to them) But then I remember: No one is born a genius. We have to be just consistent. Instead of feeling like I’m less, I always try to focus 100% of my energy on my learning. I observe how my team & seniors: - think about problems - design out of the box solutions - implement and tackle different challenges And in the last 2 years, I’ve grown so much because of this small habit Everyone feels impostor syndrome. It’s not your fault. Surrendering to that feeling is. The market is currently looking for experienced AI engineers and developers. On the other hand, many fresh tech grads are unemployed and do not qualify for jobs. Companies also need to change the hiring criteria. They need to test the new talent with hands-on projects instead of requiring experience of 1 to 3 years. It makes sense for senior roles though. I'll talk about the companies later, but today my focus will be on students. AI students and job candidates need to do better. They often tell me that they do not have any experience. That's an invalid excuse to me. Guys be creative as you do not need a job to showcase your skill set. You can pick up one or a few areas and deepen your work in these areas. For example: 1. Do voice recognition models. You do not need any job for that. Take the voices of some people around you with their consent or take audio and videos from publicly available videos, etc. Apply voice and facial matching AI here. Crime investigators and the media industry would need a lot of such people. 2. Go out on the road and make a video of vehicles. Estimate the speed, nature, and compliance of these cars. Post and deepen your work in this area. 3. Develop facial authorization videos and models. 4. Automate your email for different categories and what sort of responses should go. Implement and show it to the world that you can do it. 5. Develop chatbots (NLP/LLM solutions) on any document (s). Not just simple ones. Make them more creative, analytical, and imaginative. 6. Go out and take videos and photos of Buildings. Identify the number of floors or cleanliness of windows or find out broken windows etc. Paint quality too. Try to find as many features as you can. Test, replicate, and refine. 7. Generate hypothetical reports on the vitals of patients and try to implement disease-predicting models. And if you can collaborate with any doctor or hospital for medical records improve your capability. 8. Find out about fights or garbage or any other unwanted activities in public spaces. 9. Talk to any factory and do health and safety models for them. Do it yourself while wearing a helmet or holding a knife in the wrong way. Identify it and then convince other companies to let you experiment. 10. Make a video on the road and identify who was not wearing a helmet on the bike. These are only a few very basic examples that you can do to showcase your skillset for job or entrepreneurship. Don't just do basic models and then sit. Continuously improve them. Learn cloud. Share with others. Get feedback. Be careful about consent and data privacy. Learn how to deploy the solutions. You can also talk to any restaurant or agri/livestock farm or shop. Ask them what problems they are facing and then try to solve them. Do not just complain that you do not have a job. Do something and then show the world about your capabilities.

Sharing My Google Interview Experience I interviewed with Google back in October 2023. It was a screening round in which I was asked three graph-related questions. The code had to be written on a notepad instead of an IDE, which was a bit challenging but manageable. I did well, solving all three questions with complete and functional code with proper explanation to the interviewer. I was asked a fourth follow-up question as well, which I also answered correctly. Having done numerous Leetcode questions and being aware of what Google typically asks, I was optimistic about my chances of clearing all the rounds. However, after the first round, I received the following email(the image). Was I disappointed? Absolutely. The opportunity came at a time when there were not many of them in the market, and it felt like a huge setback. But I convinced myself that I had given my best effort. Sometimes, things are beyond our control, and even after giving our best, we don't achieve the desired results.

🧠 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑾𝒆𝒍𝒍𝑫𝒆𝒗 I've recently interviewed with WellDev for 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫 (𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐅𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧) position. Unfortunately, I was kicked out from the 2nd technical round. I've shared all the questions that I faced in their three rounds (MCQ, 1st Technical, and 2nd Technical). However, they have another round which is called the CTO or COO round before confirming a candidate for that position. The easiest way to get promoted is To switch job I do write about career growth and upskilling to develop senior/staff traits but I feel Uplevelling by switching jobs is still easier than getting promoted. However, it is difficult to get uplevelled in an interview if you haven’t created much impact and do not have interesting projects to talk about. Thoughts ? #softwareengineering #career

Back at Meta, I worked with a 10x engineer who grew from senior to staff in just 1 year, 5x faster than average. Here was his secret for insane growth: Embrace looking like an idiot. This engineer joined my team, which entirely did Android. However, he came from an iOS background and had never written Android code before. Instead of spending months doing tutorials and reading docs, he just started hacking code together, putting out a PR within his 1st week. It was literally some of the worst Android code I had ever seen. So I left a lot of feedback. And several other engineers left a lot of feedback. His mountain of mistakes didn't phase him at all, quite the opposite. He happily took all the feedback and asked follow-up questions, eager for more. He repeated this process constantly, and after ~2 months, he was writing more code than 95% of the team, including me. You couldn't even tell that he was new to Android. If you want to grow fast, completely let go of your fear and ego. Dear LinkedIn fam, when someone shares his email for a job opening, they’re looking for relevant candidates, not an inbox flooded with irrelevant CVs. Here’s why sending irrelevant CVs is problematic: 🚫 Wastes time for the recruiter and may delay the process for deserving candidates. 🚫 Hurts your credibility. The best advice I got from a senior engineer as a junior during my time at Amazon was this:   “If you want to be a high-performing software engineer, then you need to iterate faster.” Faster feedback = stronger outcomes. - Focused PRs > Large PRs - Instant previews > Full app rebuilds - Iterative designs > Waiting for "perfect" - Weekly check-ins > Once-a-year reviews - Building transparently > Building in stealth - Real data testing > Hypothetical scenarios - Quick prototypes > Fully polished releases - Clear mock-ups > Specs with endless revisions - Compiler warnings > Debugging runtime issues The quicker you get insights, the faster you can make progress. >> Speed in feedback = speed in growth.<<

Something to consider as an Engineer 💡

While the practice of doing crap pull requests and letting your teammates correct you is questionable, and this whole story might be bogus to begin with, it does strike a chord with me. From my experience, the developers who want to spend weeks reading docs and doing tutorials before writing any code, end up not writing much code in the long run. Jump in, break stuff, ask questions! The best devs will have a PR on the 1st day: fixing some crap sample code, tutorial or how-to that no one bothered to update for a while.

The moment you get there, you have to prepare well for the System Design Interview. Approaching it for the first time can be stressful. I still remember my first interview—it wasn't easy at that point in time! Over the years, as interviewer and interviewee, I tried to structure my approach - the way how I handled it. It helped me to pass every single system job interview. I called it the UNDER method: 1. Understand your business domain first 2. Narrow the scope 3. Discover key numbers 4. Sometimes, it’s the small things that leave a big impression. Years ago, while I was working at Amazon in London, I interviewed a candidate along with a colleague. I was still practicing my interview skills, so I was shadowing and learning the ropes. We asked the candidate a technical question that required using the whiteboard. He walked over, picked up a pen—and it was out of ink. He grabbed another—same issue. The interviewers being unprepared for an interview leaves a bad impression. It reflects poorly on the team and can make the candidate question the organization’s readiness. I offered to grab pens from another room, but the candidate surprised me by pulling a 4-pack of pens out of his backpack, saying, "I brought my own." Now that is preparedness! I wish I could say he got the job, but after all these years, I don’t remember. What I do remember is noting his foresight in my interview notes. As for me, I just ordered a fresh set of whiteboard markers from Amazon—gotta be ready for any upcoming in-person interviews.
