Already heard of Devin? In the face of ongoing layoffs and the emerging threat of AI, the tech industry finds itself at a crossroads. Despite the current challenges, including the impact of AI tools like Devin, the sector remains robust, with its foundations stronger than ever compared to the past decades. Once buoyed by unprecedented hiring and wage gains, developers' journey now involves uncertainties and a shift towards automation that echoes historical transitions in other industries. Yet, the essence of progress lies in adaptation, not resistance. As the tech landscape evolves, the emphasis may shift from the quantity of programmers to the integration and value of technology in society. The unpredictable yet inevitable future demands a focus on the present's opportunities rather than the fear of displacement. https://lnkd.in/e4TqiXwe #TechIndustry #FutureOfWork #AIChallenge #Engineering

The technology is evolving at a blistering pace, and figuring out which to use, for what task, can be tricky. We’re all being deluged with news about how the latest generation of AI is transforming people’s lives, helping businesses be more productive, and even leading to layoffs. But that flood of information doesn’t help anyone answer the most basic question about these AIs: Which is best? So I canvassed executives, engineers and researchers who are knee-deep in the process of applying the world’s most powerful AIs to real world problems, to find out what they have learned. Their answers surprised me. There was plenty of practical advice about the relative strengths and weaknesses of AIs from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta. But the overall message was that the best AI for any task depends on both the user and the task. Their insights also offer a glimpse of where the entire field of AI is going. In a way that wasn’t true even six months ago, companies can now either embrace the potential cost savings and productivity boost of generative AI—which some researchers believe is on the path to a “general” or humanlike AI—or risk losing out to competitors who will.

#JobMarketConcerns #AIImpact #SoftwareEngineering Hey everyone! 👋 I’ve been diving into the discussions here and noticed a common theme: a lot of folks are holding onto the idea that “boom and bust cycles will happen, but jobs will always bounce back.” But let’s be real: it’s been two years since the initial disruption, and things seem more challenging than ever. 🥲 So, I’m left wondering—what if this is the new norm? What if the job market, especially in tech, just doesn’t recover like we expect? Take my friend, for example. He’s been an engineer for a decade, but lately, his company has implemented a hiring freeze. Why? They’re finding that AI tools can do a lot of the heavy lifting that once required human engineers. We’ve got systems like Devin and Genie out there, and there are several others on the rise. 🤖 Here are a few thoughts that keep circling in my mind: Job Displacement:** If AI continues to advance and becomes capable of handling 50% of engineering tasks, we migh... AI in Software Engineer Vetting: Trust or Bust? Let's dive into the hot topic of using AI for vetting software engineers – is it the silver bullet we've been waiting for, or just another glitch in the matrix? With two decades of experience, I've seen tech trends come and go faster than you can say "algorithm." On one hand, AI promises to revolutionize the hiring game, sifting through resumes faster than a caffeine-fueled recruiter and identifying top talent with Terminator-like precision. But wait – before you hand over the keys to the kingdom, let's pump the brakes and take a reality check. Sure, AI can crunch numbers and analyze data like nobody's business, but can it truly gauge the intangible qualities that make a great engineer – like passion, creativity, and problem-solving mojo? As someone who's hired their fair share of tech whizzes, I'll admit – it's a tough call! So, dear LinkedIn fam, the jury's still out on this one. AI may be the future, but when it comes to building dream teams, sometimes there's just no substitute for good old-fashioned human intuition. #AIinHiring #softwareengineering #TrustTheProcess SolutionValley

Definitely worth a read. The future is full of opportunities... This insightful article by Lize Raes goes into a little more detail how our roles as developers, devops and sysadmins are evolving with AI. Just like machines and computers did in the past, this will replace some jobs, but also open up new ones. The article also sheds some light on how the current downturn isn't just about AI or rising interest rates - it's a mix of several factors. Her insights from major tech conferences and discussions with industry leaders provide a clearer picture of AI's impact on the job market and offer some tips on how to navigate this change. Looking forward to reading more in the near future, especially with ideas on how to apply this to your own business

The most immediate impact AI will probably have in the Workplace will be on repetitive and administrative work. If effective, It should generate more operational efficiencies to a specific firm (depending on the industry of course). Those tasks that requiere deep and specialized levels of thinking and decision making will probably not be affected too much (at least yet). But at the same time AI will still be an important tool to leverage for this group, considering it's potential in helping reduce cognitive noise and biases in decision making (like it has been noted by Nobel Prize in economics, Daniel Kahneman).
