Working on CVs and LinkedIn profiles is something that come up often in my coaching practice. And I have an opinion that is potentially controversial: CVs should be authentic. They should show who you truly are as a person. What drives you, how you work, what you’re passionate about. CVs shouldn’t be about ‘fake it till you make it’ (I hate that expression with passion). They shouldn’t sell something that doesn’t feel aligned with who you are. Recruitment is a human-to-human interaction, despite applicant tracking systems and AI getting in there. At some point, your CV will end up in front of the eyes of another person. The best way to circumvent the systems is to put your CV directly in the mailbox of the person you want to work with. Virtual network may seem difficult, but it’s worth thinking about your strategy: what organisation would you love to join? Who’s the person who’d be recruiting you? How can you engage with them (without asking for a job straightaway)? Here are the 2 things I recommend doing if you want to show your true self on your CV and LinkedIn profile: Weave in your values, strengths and personality traits in your personal statement and talk about the impact you want to have. Talk about your personal interests. They’ll give a glimpse of the person you are outside of work and they’ll help you create a personal connection with recruiters / hiring managers. There are many stories on LinkedIn about people applying to open roles and not getting a response. ❌ Whilst this is obviously not acceptable and highly frustrating, how do you maximise your chances of a favourable outcome?🤔 Apart from the obvious, having a killer CV which is tailored to the position, concise and showcases your successes, what else can you do? In a world where there are frequently hundreds of applications for a position you need to go the extra mile to stand out. 💥 Don't purely rely on sending your CV and sit waiting for that elusive invitation to interview. You can message the job poster directly but will your note stand out in a busy inbox? Maybe, maybe not.🤷🏼♂️ So why not find out their phone number and call them? 📞Using the phone isn't complicated and, in my opinion, makes you stand out from the crowd - too many people have forgotten this. **Feeling Disheartened by the Job Application Process? Let's Talk About It.** As job seekers, we invest a lot of time and effort into applying for positions that align with our skills and experience in various job portals & company's website. We carefully tailor our resumes, craft cover letters, and research companies to ensure we’re a perfect fit. However, the waiting game that follows can be quite disheartening, especially when there’s no communication from the recruiters or hiring managers. I completely understand that recruitment processes can take time, and there are many applications to review. Still, a simple update—whether positive or negative—can make a huge difference. If a candidate isn’t shortlisted for the next stage, a quick notification would allow them to refocus their efforts on other opportunities, rather than spending weeks or even months waiting and wondering. Open communication helps maintain respect and transparency in the hiring process. It not only respects the candidate’s time but also reinforces the company’s brand as an employer that values its applicants. To all the recruitment professionals out there, a sincere request: If a candidate isn't moving forward in the process, please let them know. One of the most sinister is influencers and “CV experts” telling you that a CV tailored to the job specs of your potential employer will increase your chances of landing the position. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭. By tailoring your CV, you are starting off your work relationship with manipulation. You are telling your employer what they want to hear, which is not necessarily the truth. Your profile should represent your experience and the content of your character. Yesterday this message popped up in my LinkedIn Inbox ….📨 Read it ?? Moment I opened this it brought a smile to my face…Curious why? What’s so unique or different? 🤔 Someone actually asked for a referral with proper context! What did he do differently? He did his research on our careers website, found a suitable job, and sent his CV with the relevant job ID. Even if I don’t have an immediate opportunity, I’ll definitely go the extra mile for someone like this! Maybe something as simple as connecting him with the relevant recruiter. Why am I sharing this? Recruiters receive 500+ messages daily. To stand out, you need to put in genuine effort rather than randomly sharing your CV. Trust me, this makes a huge difference! Often, we notice that many candidates directly approach HR representatives of companies via calls, WhatsApp, or personal messages on LinkedIn, despite the clear instructions in job advertisements to apply via official email addresses. It's important to understand that contacting individuals directly and sending them unsolicited messages or calls will not impress the recruiter. On the contrary, it often creates a negative impression and can be seen as a disturbance. It can signal desperation rather than professionalism. Here are a few points to consider: =>Always apply via the official email or application link provided in the job advertisement. This ensures your CV is registered in the company's system and reaches the right person. => Approaching recruiters directly can be perceived as unprofessional. Instead, focus on crafting a strong application and cover letter. =>Work on your personal branding and ensure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and reflects your skills and experiences accurately. =>Invest time in continuous learning and professional development to make your profile more attractive to recruiters. =>If your profile is strong and relevant, recruiters will contact you. Trust the process and be patient. =>Your attitude towards the job application process shows your professionalism. I use LinkedIn to network for my job and to help others. My primary role is to recruit potential candidates for the clients I serve. While my job doesn’t require me to share resume tips and interview advice, I choose to do so because I genuinely want to help by sharing what I’ve learned in my 15 years in this field. It’s unfortunate that I’ve encountered rude and mean comments from people who either don’t agree with my advice or are disgruntled for other reasons. This negativity is unnecessary and makes me hesitant to use this platform for anything beyond sharing the available positions we have. However, I’m not going to stop. I’ll continue to share because so many of you are gracious and kind. For those who leave mean or rude comments, please understand that you don’t know me and have never worked with me. I will delete those comments and block those individuals. LinkedIn is meant for networking and supporting one another, not for attacking people we don’t know out of frustration with our own situations. There is enough negativity in the world already. Maybe because I’m a recruiter, I’m seen as an adversary to some who just have had bad experiences, but those who know me and have worked with me know the kind of person and recruiter I am.
