About us
The History of Advertising Trust (HAT) was founded in 1976 and registered as a charity in 1978 (no. 276194). During the past four decades HAT’s remit has spread to embrace all forms of brand communications including retail marketing, traditional and new media, direct marketing and public relations. Due to the vision and foresight of HAT’s founders and Trustees, as well as the continued financial support from industry bodies and individuals over the years, HAT’s unique resources have been continually updated to meet the research needs and new technologies of the 21st century. HAT has grown impressively since its early days at temporary premises in London, courtesy of The Advertising Association. From there it moved to Butler's Wharf, London for a number of years and first came to Raveningham, Norfolk in 1992. The steady growth of the archive collections since then has seen a parallel growth in the size of our premises. Following the commissioning of two more archive rooms in 2016 we now have over 8000 square feet of dedicated space, embracing high density mobile shelving for more efficient storage. The Michael Cudlipp Research and Study Centre is named after former Director, Michael Cudlipp (1992-2004). HAT's mission is to promote learning and creative excellence by preserving and celebrating the advertising heritage of the UK. This includes cataloguing and preservation work to the highest possible standard that enables access to all for study and research. HAT also offers a developing portfolio of on-line image galleries for the benefit and enjoyment of researchers and the public. http://www.hatads.org.uk/about/default.aspx

NOW WE ARE THREE! 🎂 Yes! Eastern Promise had its third birthday last month, and because I've started my/our fourth year at something of a gallop, it's gone unremarked until now (except by my accountant and HMRC...) And rather than trumpet 🎺 the achievements thus far, I wanted to share the story behind one part of the Eastern Promise podcast and pay tribute to a much missed mentor, so this post will be a bit on the personal side. Regular listeners will know I sign off each episode of the podcast with the phrase "Bye for now!", stretching the 'i' sound in 'bye' in a way that's hard to convey in type, as I've just discovered... That wasn't (only) a quirky choice on my part but in fact, a tribute to the man sat below to the right of a much younger me. Stewart Orr was many things: presenter on BBC Radio #Norfolk on the Sunday night arts show; lecturer at City College Norwich; owner of not only an incredible collection of radios, TVs and more, but also his own recording studio! He was also a firm family friend, best pals with my father-in-law and MC at my wedding to Sally Osborne. My recovery from sudden illness in 2018 was boosted no end by the weekly visits I paid to Stewart's incredible bachelor pad just outside Harleston (#Suffolk side). Stewart was battling against #cancer but remained in very high spirits indeed. We would have coffee, work for a bit, adjourn to The Swan Hotel for lunch, more coffee, a bit more work, then call it a day. What I in my arrogance didn't appreciate until some time after he passed away in 2019, is that whilst I thought I was just supporting him to run his computers, splice and transfer cinefilm and, yes, work in audio (an experience that rekindled my love of the format), he was in turn getting me back on my feet and helping me find my way back into the world. The way I say "Bye for now" is an homage to the way Stewart would end every telephone call, with just that phrase. It's also the reason Priors Croft Services, my consultancy biz, is so named; after his barn where I spent all too few Thursdays in his excellent company. Thank you, Stewart. And thank you to everyone who has supported Eastern Promise and who listens to the podcast. I promise you, the best is yet to come... You can still see his collection on display in #Brockdish near Diss. Geoff Doggett; Anthony Isaacs; David Clayton; Mike Talbot; Johanna Forster; Ben Little; Rachel Hales; Saul Humphrey 🌍. How do you refresh a brand with thoughtfulness, thoroughness, seriousness and fun? We found at last week, at a great evening with the Aviva brand team. Very impressively, they created immersive experiences for employees so people really get the brand, and can become its advocates. Brands, after all, are built from the inside. Thank you so much to James Davis, Charlotte Nairne-Clark, Shaun Dyker and Clare Beaumont-Adam. And the food, front desk and tech people at Aviva Norwich. It all meant a lot to us - because Aviva is one of the oldest, definitely the biggest, and probably the most significant brand to come from Brandland.

AdWomen launches today on Friday: the incredible collaboration between Museum of Brands and History of Advertising Trust reflecting on women in advertising and working in advertising over the decades. Listen to Sabina Usher (she/her) and Alice Kain on today’s Women’s Hour talking about what’s in there and why it matters and exploring some uncomfortable truths. “We can’t clap ourselves on the back because we no longer show images of virginal 60s housewives, or pin up 80s sex symbols” – so what has changed? Get to the Museum of Brands and take a look.
