NOW WE ARE THREE! 🎂 Yes! Eastern Promise had its third birthday last month, and because I've started my/our fourth year at something of a gallop, it's gone unremarked until now (except by my accountant and HMRC...) And rather than trumpet 🎺 the achievements thus far, I wanted to share the story behind one part of the Eastern Promise podcast and pay tribute to a much missed mentor, so this post will be a bit on the personal side. Regular listeners will know I sign off each episode of the podcast with the phrase "Bye for now!", stretching the 'i' sound in 'bye' in a way that's hard to convey in type, as I've just discovered... That wasn't (only) a quirky choice on my part but in fact, a tribute to the man sat below to the right of a much younger me. Stewart Orr was many things: presenter on BBC Radio #Norfolk on the Sunday night arts show; lecturer at City College Norwich; owner of not only an incredible collection of radios, TVs and more, but also his own recording studio! He was also a firm family friend, best pals with my father-in-law and MC at my wedding to Sally Osborne. My recovery from sudden illness in 2018 was boosted no end by the weekly visits I paid to Stewart's incredible bachelor pad just outside Harleston (#Suffolk side). Stewart was battling against #cancer but remained in very high spirits indeed. We would have coffee, work for a bit, adjourn to The Swan Hotel for lunch, more coffee, a bit more work, then call it a day. What I in my arrogance didn't appreciate until some time after he passed away in 2019, is that whilst I thought I was just supporting him to run his computers, splice and transfer cinefilm and, yes, work in audio (an experience that rekindled my love of the format), he was in turn getting me back on my feet and helping me find my way back into the world. The way I say "Bye for now" is an homage to the way Stewart would end every telephone call, with just that phrase. It's also the reason Priors Croft Services, my consultancy biz, is so named; after his barn where I spent all too few Thursdays in his excellent company. Thank you, Stewart. And thank you to everyone who has supported Eastern Promise and who listens to the podcast. I promise you, the best is yet to come...
