We want everyone to have safe, healthy, durable homes and buildings, supporting MBIE's goal to grow New Zealand for all.
About us
Our aspirations are echoed in our Māori identity – Hīkina Whakatutuki – which broadly means "lifting to make successful”. The building sector is crucial to New Zealand’s economy. It contributes more than 6 percent to our gross domestic product (GDP) and employs more than 250,000 people. A well-functioning sector will have a positive effect on our country’s health, economic stability, security and social cohesion. The building sector is the third largest industry in our economy by business-count. It is characterised by large numbers of small, diverse businesses working to a performance-based building regulatory system that continues to mature. We aim to make sure everyone involved in building work has the information they need to undertake building work, and can quickly and easily access and understand it. We provide authoritative information and guidelines on building-related regulation, rights and obligations.

Own or thinking about purchasing a spa pool? Recent changes to the Building Act clarify inspection requirements for small heated pools (such as spa pools). For a pool to be exempt from periodic inspection, the pool must have a compliant safety cover. The cover must comply with either the current New Zealand Building Code or the requirement that was in effect when installed. If this is not the case, the small heated pool must be inspected every 3 years by your Council. Find out about changes relating to periodic inspections for small heated pools: https://bit.ly/3ZDzQrU

As the weather warms up, it’s important to keep safe around pools this summer. Before you buy a pool, know the rules. All pools 40cm or more in depth require a barrier to keep tamariki safe: https://bit.ly/3D9itXc

Following the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes, we learnt a huge amount about issues such as liquefaction, rockfall and earthquake-proof foundations that will be crucial for building now and into the future. We’ve released a new online learning module on rockfall mitigation. The course is structured as a game-like puzzle where you’ll take the role of a geotechnical engineer and experience the rockfall mitigation process. Access the new course on the Building Performance Learning Centre: https://lnkd.in/gnNeiJ9q

We interviewed some of our Rapid Building Assessors recently to talk about The Rapid Building Assessor programme. The programme ensures that Aotearoa New Zealand has enough experts ready to complete rapid building assessments when there has been damage to buildings because of an emergency event. If you are interested to find out more check out our latest video here: https://lnkd.in/gVkrGU7X
