About us
The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) is a not-for-profit, industry organisation that aims to make sure New Zealanders live, work and play in a healthy, sustainable built environment. We do this through: - setting standards of industry best practice - mainly through environmental rating systems for the built environment; - influencing policy through leading and demonstrating best practice, advocacy through industry networks and supporting a research agenda that will influence the market; - education and training across all areas of the building industry value chain; and - providing access to networks, information and the latest global resources for our members to actively lead the market. We run rating tools that verify building sustainability, helping industry reduce the impact and improve the quality of homes, workplaces and public buildings: Green Star - the tool for offices, schools, industrial sites and any other commercial or public building Homestar - the tool for home sustainability NABERSNZ - energy performance benchmark for NZ office buildings This account is not monitored for customer service, if you have any inquries please email us at [email protected]

More leadership from New Ground Capital with some amazing new 7 Homestar Build-to rent apartments! With good sized balconies, moderate and appropriate sized windows, and a layout that maximises connection to the community, Kaweka is an exciting example of great design for its long-term tenants. Congratulations to all involved in delivering a tremendous development and result ⭐
Kaweka – our latest Build-to-rent (BTR) project for Hāpai Housing – is complete, achieving NZGBC Homestar 7 certification! This builds on the success of award-winning Moroki, offering 44 high-quality apartments consisting of studios, 1 and 2 bed units in Mt Albert. Mt Albert’s central location, transport links, green spaces, and access to quality education made it an obvious choice for our next BTR development for Hāpai. The suburb is named after an extinct volcanic cone, and the naming of the development acknowledges this, with Kaweka translating to “ridge of a hill.” The ethos of sustainability focused design is continued from Moroki, and includes centralised hot water, soon to be installed solar panels, and EV charging. Honouring the unique features of the local whenua, existing onsite volcanic rock is integrated into the landscaping. Kaweka has raised garden beds, enabling residents to cultivate their own food, digital locks for enhanced security, video-calling intercom systems, and the innovative New Ground MyLiving app. This app enables residents to create forums and clubs, chat with neighbours, and communicate directly with their Community Manager, fostering a connected and engaged community. This was a challenging site with rock, overhead powerlines, and nestled amongst a built-up area. We leaned into these challenges and designed a development that celebrates the natural environment to create a charming urban oasis. This was achieved through efficient building design, thoughtful orientation, a native planting palette, and street art delivered by artist Gary Silipa. His artwork reflects the volcanic theme of the surrounding suburb. Given the success of Moroki, we are thrilled to deliver this next iteration to a market in much need of high-quality, sustainable, and secure rental homes. The first tenants are already loving their new homes and the lifestyle Kaweka offers. Meri Kirihimete 🎄

The Government’s vital second Emissions Reduction Plan released today offers a step up from its first draft, but fails to include easy wins and opportunities for slashing building emissions. “Coming from a draft plan that effectively ignored buildings and construction, it is welcome to see acknowledgment of the role our sector can play. However, the vague statements have no firm commitments and don’t deliver significant change. The Government has failed to take up some basic ready-made, affordable policy options that could deliver significantly toward hitting our emissions reduction targets,” says NZGBC chief executive Andrew E.. We’ve handed over Kaweka to our clients Hāpai Housing and New Ground Capital! Our team was honoured to attend the blessing ceremony and new tenants have started to move in. This design and build apartment building comprises 44 build-to-rent homes in Mt Albert, Auckland. We achieved NZGBC Homestar 7 built rating and we delivered the project on time and on budget.

Today MBIE have begun consultation on updates to the H1 standards. Importantly, it looks to abandon the restrictive schedule method for complying with the Building Code. “There are absolutely challenges like cost and overheating that Minister Penk raised that need to be dealt with. However, the insulation standards were never the issue, it was how our industry was applying those standards,” our chief executive Andrew E. says You can read the full consultation details here: https://lnkd.in/gfrwvAAB Since news broke earlier in the year that the government was considering a potentially disastrous rollback of insulation standards we have been working closely with the Minister and his officials to ensure we don’t roll back insulation, but rather improve outcomes for the industry and Kiwis. While today’s news is welcome, there remains some concern that the calculation method is still on the table as part of the consultation. “The calculation method for complying with the Building Code is a step up from what many are doing now, but it’s nowhere near as effective as modelling. We’ll be getting more into the detail in our submission, but it’s important that we seize this opportunity to set New Zealand on the right path for the future.” We'll be proving our full consultation response in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can read our initial reaction 👇 https://lnkd.in/gnsj3mA6
