"The Hidden Taboo We Didn’t Expect to Encounter" In the spirit of #InternationalDisabilityDay, here is a story I would like to share about our work. Last week, we faced a case at our @therapy pod in Raipur that left us reflecting on how deeply ingrained taboos around mental health and disability still are in our society. A family came to us, distressed about their 26-year-old daughter’s “lack of motivation.” They described her as someone who loved cooking but struggled to take initiative. This seemed like a case of low motivation, so we advised bringing her in for a session. When they arrived, it became clear that her challenges weren’t just motivational—they were developmental, indicating a possible undiagnosed disability, which was clearly visible physically and intellectually. What surprised us even more was the parents’ reluctance to acknowledge this. Despite obvious signs and our observations, they continued to deny it, citing reasons that didn’t align with the facts. Their resistance likely stemmed from stigma—both internal and external. They mentioned visiting a center where other children with disabilities were present and self-diagnosing their daughter as “not like that.” They believed she just needed “motivation” to overcome her challenges. This encounter reminded me how much work remains to destigmatize conversations about disabilities. Families may deny the reality out of fear or shame, but it ultimately delays the help their loved ones need. At BetterSpace, we strive to open up safe, judgment-free spaces for such conversations. The Mental Health Crisis: A Supply and Quality Challenge🚨  India has been facing a significant supply problem in mental healthcare. There simply aren’t enough clinicians to meet the rising demand. But it’s not just about the numbers—the quality of care is equally critical.  This challenge reminds me of what we’ve seen in other sectors, like software development and housing, where innovative solutions emerged. Before we get deeper into what Sitaara is, wanted to put it out there as to what it is definitely not. When Manjunath and I decided to build in the parenting / early childhood development space, one of the most obvious directions for us was to build a toy or an activity company. In the age of consumerism and FOMO, any parent would be more than willing to spend money to buy yet another toy, especially if you highlight its benefits in the name of cognitive and motor skill development. (Funny how something that is readily available in all our households like pasta and pulses are being sold as kits for color and shape sorting?) It made all the business sense too - with high disposable income, parents today do not shy away from buying toys and games - a quick and convenient way to keep kids engaged, no matter how much they complain about their child barely playing with them. And now with the advent of quick commerce, soothing a tantrum has never been easier. (in the short term, yes, but far from it being the right approach in the long term). We obviously debated about it because who would not want to build a company that can show real, quick, tangible wins right from the get go. But as parents ourselves, the thought did not sit right with us. Parenting is hard in itself, but what makes it harder in today’s world is the internet telling you all the “must-do” activities your child should do and companies selling you all the “must-buy” toys your children need for their sharper, faster growth. I mean, children already grow up too fast, do we really need to push them to grow faster? And every child is unique and so is their brain and they will all evolve into beautiful beings irrespective of how many flashcards can one memorize by a certain age. As parents, we understand what fellow parents need is far from another toy or activity box being pushed to them. Also definitely not another task on their to-do list - all they want is to spend quality time with their child(ren) and an assurance that they can parent their child in the best way possible because nobody knows their child better than themselves. What would also help is a little reminder that they are not doing it all wrong, afterall. With Sitaara, we are building all that, and much more. No flashcards, we promise :)

Workshops with our corporate partners are some of my favourite experiences at Mitsu. Especially when leaders attend and initiate discussions or ask questions that reveal they've had their own struggles with stress, failure, anxiety, depression, or difficult emotions. Everyone on screen immediately relaxes, leans in, and starts to participate more, inquire more. This kind of sharing, this vulnerability truly is a strength of it can have that effect. If there's only one thing you do as a leader, or even as a manager, to support your team's mental health, let it be showing your vulnerability. It goes farther than you think. #Procrastination Last week, I had the pleasure of conducting a workshop on *procrastination*—a topic we’ve all (let’s admit it!) had firsthand experience with. The energy in the Fullife Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. room was electrifying, especially when I asked, “How many of you have postponed something important just this week?” Hands shot up faster than you can say *deadline!* We laughed, shared stories, and dug deep into what makes us put things off, even when we "know" better. Turns out, procrastination isn’t always about laziness—it’s often tied to emotions like fear of failure, perfectionism, or simply being overwhelmed. The best part? Seeing those “aha!” moments when someone realized why they procrastinate, the biology and psychology of procrastination and what they could do differently. It was a reminder that addressing procrastination is less about discipline and more about understanding yourself and your triggers. Thank you Shilpa Khanna Thakkar Sheetal A. Iswalkar for being so invested in the wellbeing of your employees. A book didn’t work for you, stop reading it.”💖 If the below post doesn’t go well with anyone, just stop reading it, don’t bother commenting 🤨 NEGOTIATIONS: THE TWISTED PROCESS OF ARM TWISTING What would you say to a customer who walks into a car showroom, takes a test drive, and comes back asking to justify the car pricing? The breakup of material costs, design costs, factory overhead costs, man-hours spent, salaries of resources involved, %margins, and more. Don’t see value, don’t buy it. Move on. What about a customer who walks into a fine dining restaurant only to postmortem every dish on the menu by asking about the ingredient costs, chef’s-staff's salary, man hours spent, restaurant overheads, cutlery and equipment costs, licenses & permit costs, %margins on every dish merely to arrive at whether the menu pricing is justified or not. Don’t see value, don’t eat it. Move on. If you don’t see value, just get up and leave. You have no right to decide what something or someone is worth. 📢 In the name of negotiations, companies hire a whole “gang” of procurement employees who feel rightfully entitled to look down upon, demean, humiliate, and postmortem a potential vendor, manufacturer, freelancer, or service partner’s worth. I do understand the need to cut costs, but a KRA that takes pride in distasteful negotiations. What a pity! Not just that, after double-digit rounds of humiliating negotiations they further arm twist by adding an obnoxious credit period of 90 to 120 days. If you survive this, then comes the legal negotiations that will make you bend backward, and finally, if you manage to pick up the leftovers then nonstop additional requests over and above the laid SOW will surely break your spine. Unfortunately, most of the time these individuals do not even understand the basics of the product or service they are negotiating for. 👇 I believe that misguided focus on short-term gains, unrealistic demands, threats, intimidation & humiliation tactics by negotiators might save some costs but in long term it is counterproductive, damages reputation & relationships, erodes trust, repulses good talent, reduces innovation, and compromises success. ✨️ Shouldn’t we as a community be endorsing healthy progressive conversations, fair & transparent negotiations, value-based relationships, win-win outcomes, and ethical conduct? I understand it's important for procurement teams to negotiate well, but there's a clear line between being assertive and being disrespectful. By adopting more ethical and collaborative negotiation strategies, procurement teams can create a more positive, progressive, and sustainable business environment for all partners involved. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝘀 𝗥𝗖𝗜 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 The recent blunder by the Rehabilitation Council of India in awarding a license to Counselling Psychologists after a 4 year undergraduate degree is not only laughable, it is offensive to all the Counselling Psychologists contributing to the current MHP workforce. I'm a RCI licensed Clinical Psychologist and when I founded my company The Emotional Wellness Initiatives in 2020, a majority of my team was made up of Counselling Psychologists. That holds true today, 4 years later, as well. And I intend to keep it that way in the future. The purpose of my post today is not to undermine the work Clinical Psychologists do (I am one too, after all!). It is to highlight what Counselling Psychologists do and I think more Clinical Psychologists need to speak up about the role of Counselling Psychologists to enhance the parity in the field. So here are my reasons why I love to work with Counselling Psychologists: ✅They are not boxed-in by "diagnosis" ✅They have a natural knack to look at clients in their entirety than a cluster of symptoms ✅They are able to work as efficiently without a formal diagnosis, as with one ✅They are more open minded about trying newer approaches in therapy ✅They are less apprehensive about taking experimental chances in therapy ✅They have limitless potential to expand their expertise due to the openness of their role I have even had the pleasure of working with some fantastic second-career Counselling Psychologists. Yes, they finished their Masters through correspondence but I saw a spark in them and a very strong natural knack to make it as a good therapist. I gave them chances in my company and have watched them blossom into amazingly effective therapists. So restricting the Counselling Psychologist licensing degree to science students and awarding the license after 4 years of undergraduate degree is an insult to the entire crop of Counselling Psychologists in the field today - to their immense contribution to mental health and to their efforts invested in becoming a better therapist every day. 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 and I will always have respect for the career track they have followed through the BA + MA + additional training pattern. RCI needs to come up with a licensing qualification AFTER the BA + MA track, instead of introducing another form of elitism by restricting it to science students. My Thoughts on the New BSc in Clinical Psychology by RCI Hi everyone,I wanted to share my thoughts on the new Bachelor of Science in Clinical Psychology introduced by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). While this new development has some great potential, there are also some critical points that need addressing, especially considering my experiences with Calmspace. 🚩Concerns: 📍Entry Point Requirements: The biggest issue I see is the requirement for students to have a science background in their 12th grade. This could exclude many passionate students from humanities backgrounds who want to pursue psychology. Many of our best minds in psychology come from humanities, and this requirement seems unnecessarily restrictive. 📍Hasty Implementation: The decision to impose this new program in August, without reviewing it thoroughly with institutions and applying it from the next academic year, seems rushed. This could lead to a lack of preparedness among educational institutions and potential students. 📍Low Seat Intake: The number of seats available for this program is quite low, which could lead to intense competition and leave many deserving students without the opportunity to pursue their passion. 📍Maturity Concerns: At 21, many students may not yet have the emotional maturity required for counseling roles. The program needs to include strong mentorship and support to help young professionals develop these critical skills. ✅Positives: 📍Structured Learning: A standardized curriculum means students will receive comprehensive education, preparing them well for their careers. 📍Raising Awareness: This program can help reduce the stigma around mental health and encourage more people to seek help. 📍Clear Career Paths: It provides a clearer path to becoming a licensed clinical psychologist, addressing the shortage of mental health professionals in India. 📍Practical Training: Emphasis on hands-on experience will ensure that students are not just theoretically knowledgeable but also practically competent. 🖋️Looking Forward: While the new BSc in Clinical Psychology is a promising step, we need to address these challenges to ensure it truly benefits the mental health landscape in India.
