For those interested in the origins of "psychological safety" research and connection to the science of failing well... (From her recent book excerpt) Amy Edmondson, who developed this writes: "...Much later I used the term psychological safety to capture this difference in work environment, and I developed a set of survey items to measure it, thereby spawning a subfield of research in organizational behavior. Today, over a thousand research papers in fields ranging from education to business to medicine have shown that teams and organizations with higher psychological safety have better performance, lower burnout, and, in medicine, even lower patient mortality. Why might this be the case? Because psychological safety helps people take the interpersonal risks that are necessary for achieving excellence in a fast-changing, interdependent world. When people work in psychologically safe contexts, they know that questions are appreciated, ideas are welcome, and errors and failure are discussable. In these environments, people can focus on the work without being tied up in knots about what others might think of them. They know that being wrong won’t be a fatal blow to their reputation." https://lnkd.in/g8UYBgUf

💡Bridging the Gap: From Theory to Practice in Trauma-Informed Care Self-reflection has revealed a crucial challenge: translating theoretical knowledge into real-time therapeutic support. Recently, I encountered a client in clear distress—shaking, tearful, and expressing a strong urge to leave the room. My mind blanked. Despite my training in trauma-informed practices and DBT, the practical application escaped me in that intense moment. In hindsight, grounding techniques could have helped, but theory alone didn't prepare me to identify and apply these strategies instinctively. I also realized I was too quick to accept the client’s self-diagnosis of being in "flight mode" without making my own assessment. This experience underscored two key insights: 1. Practice is essential—theories must be internalized through real-world scenarios or simulations to become second nature. 2. Independent observation matters—even with informed clients, validating their emotional state before reacting is crucial to avoid missing vital cues. ❤️ An Interesting Personal Insight: While proofreading this post, I noticed something surprising—I was also in a slight "flight" mode. My mind drifted, thoughts scattered, and for a moment, I felt the urge to escape or cut the process short. Doubts crept in: Why didn’t I handle the situation better? Why couldn’t I apply my knowledge effectively? It was a powerful reminder of the “mind rollercoaster” we often experience, both as professionals and human beings. This moment of self-awareness highlights the importance of practicing self-compassion and recognizing our own emotional responses. I'm eager to grow beyond casework into a more competent therapeutic practitioner. How have you navigated this learning curve? What strategies or resources have helped you bridge the gap between theory and real-world application? Let's discuss! #FlightMode #SocialWorker #MentalHealthSocialWork

Is high sensitivity a blessing or a challenge? This was the question posed by researcher Veronique De Gucht at the Second International Conference on Sensitivity Research last week. To study this question, the researchers developed a new scale, the Sensory Processing Sensitivity Questionnaire (SPSQ) that identifies 4 positive ✅ and 2 negative ⛔️ subscales of high sensitivity: ✅1. Sensitivity to Subtle Internal and External Stimuli ⛔️2. Sensory Discomfort ⛔️3. Emotional and Physiological Reactivity ✅4. Sensory Comfort ✅5. Social-affective Sensitivity ✅6. Aesthetic Sensitivity She concluded that whether high sensitivity is a blessing or a challenge, depends on whether you consider the more positive or negative aspects of sensory processing sensitivity. Negative aspects were shown to be strongly associated with psychological and physical symptoms whereas positive aspects of the trait were not. In addition, resilience was found to be higher in those scoring higher on the positive subscales leading to fewer symptoms, and lower on those scoring higher on the negative subscales leading to more symptoms. This is potentially very helpful information for those providing therapeutic or coaching services for highly sensitive people where interventions can be targeted depending on whether individuals score higher on positive or negative aspects of the trait. Those scoring higher on the negative aspects would benefit from learning skills to cope with over stimulation, whereas those scoring higher on the positive aspects would benefit from developing their strengths to help improve their alignment within their personal and professional environments. Want to find out how you score? You can complete an online version of the questionnaire (SPS-Monitor) at the link provided in the comments. You will receive direct feedback on your scores overall and on each of the subscales with further information on what each subscale is measuring. #sensoryprocessingsensitivity #sensitivityresearch #hsp #highlysensitiveperson

In 1988, psychologists Jonathan Baron and John Hershey observed a concerning trend in decision-making... Across multiple experiments, they found that “Outcome Bias” may strongly influence us to judge decisions based on their outcomes, rather than the quality of the decision-making process. Imagine a doctor choosing between treatment paths. If the treatment succeeded, we would assess both the initial decision and the doctor favorably. But if the treatment failed, the same decision would be deemed poor and the doctor seen as incompetent—despite identical decision-making in each case! ➡️ What could explain these results? Behavioral science highlights three key factors: 1. Hindsight Bias: We believe the decision-maker should have foreseen the outcome and underestimate the role of bad luck… 2. Affective Reactions: Strong emotions, like loss, drive us to judge based on our feelings about the outcome rather than facts… 3. Cognitive Effort Aversion: Evaluating the details of complex decisions is mentally exhausting— we take shortcuts, at the expense of accuracy!! ➡️ What does this mean for healthcare? In the long run, Outcome Bias could skew perceptions of healthcare professionals and pressure doctors to avoid risks, fearing judgement more than focusing on optimal care... Thankfully, BEESY codes for dozens of drivers like Hindsight Bias and Effort Aversion, along with a multitude of additional factors that influence treatment decisions. Mapping out treatment landscapes is complex, but rigorous behavioral science can uncover actionable insights into the decision-making process, leading to more confidence in the decisions that drive patient care. #behavioralscience #outcomebias #healthcare #BEESY
