In cooperation with Biotechgate, Venture Valuation AG has produced its third report on #merger & #acquisition activity in the life sciences industry in 2023. The report highlights slow signs of recovery when compared to the previous year. However, M&A activity picked up at a faster pace towards the end of the year. Despite strong foundational research, Germany faces challenges in integrating cell and gene therapies (CGT) into medical care, risking falling behind internationally. A national CGT strategy was presented yesterday.   Here’s how the strategy differs from the CGT strategy in the US and UK:   𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥-𝐄𝐡𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐡-𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭 (𝐏𝐄𝐈): Germany plans to centralize regulatory processes for GCT at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut to streamline the regulatory environment. This involves defragmenting the regulatory landscape and introducing "sandbox" procedures as innovation spaces. ​In the US, multiple agencies such as the FDA and NIH handle different aspects of GCT regulation and development, while the UK has the MHRA and other bodies involved in the regulatory process. 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Germany emphasizes a "bottom-up" approach involving diverse stakeholders directly in the governance structure. This includes establishing a governance structure with the participation of significant stakeholders and developing a GCT network map and annual progress reports​. This differs from the US and UK, where strategies tend to have more top-down, centralized approaches often led by major government agencies like the FDA in the US or the MHRA in the UK. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐌𝐏: Germany’s strategy includes specific measures for financial and structural support in GMP production, such as establishing a central GCT-GMP committee and ensuring sufficient financial resources for GMP infrastructures​. This level of detailed infrastructure planning and financial commitment is not as prominently featured in the US and UK. 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Germany’s approach includes continuous political engagement and annual progress reporting to ensure political support and adaptation of policies. This structured political integration is more pronounced than in the US and UK, where political support is sought but not as systematically integrated​. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬: The strategy highlights the importance of maintaining an open discourse involving humanities and social sciences, ensuring that ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSA) are considered in GCT development​. This broader societal integration is less emphasized in the US and UK strategies, which focus more on the scientific and regulatory aspects. 𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: I welcome the centralization at PEI. This offers the potential for rapid progress. I have mixed feelings about the other points, as they have the potential to slow things down. What's your thoughts on this?

Supporting early and innovative start-ups and venture ideas is still a challenge but will eventually follow the upswing in later stage biotechnology, if we 🧬 successfully incubate and accelerate innovation 🧬 focus on market needs 🧬 build strong alliances 🧬 leverage venture investments through anchor funds through insurance firms (read box 2) Biotechnology with all its associated technologies (digital, AI, HPC etc) will be a driver for a societal future!

It's amazing to see so many biotech and antibody-based startups on the list of Top 100 Swiss Startups this year. However, it's not much of a surprise. With one of the most supportive environments in the world for the life sciences sector, Switzerland provides the perfect conditions for biotech startups to take root and grow. Our COO, Rudi Schmidt, will speak at the 15th Annual Drug Discovery Forum in Berlin about "What Real-World Data from #aging research can teach us for #AI-based precision medicine in #drug development." #Drugdevelopment faces high attrition rates, and the reproducibility and translatability of preclinical findings to human applications are still limited, resulting in a low return on investment in terms of clinical impact. In his presentation Rudi will focus on how to overcome these challenges and the translational discordance #realworlddata from research in aging and #longevity. Summarizing the latest publications he will outline several conclusions, for example, on state-of-the-art model-informed drug development (MIDD) that combines real-world data of physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes during aging with #artificialintelligence.   Decades of research using genetic and molecular biology tools have unlocked several hallmarks of aging. At the same time, our understanding of embryonic development and cell growth has considerably improved. The mechanisms and pathways related to aging can be targeted for lifestyle as well as for drug interventions. I will talk about what #RealWorldData from #Aging Research Can Teach Us for #AI-based #PrecisionMedicine in #Drug Development" at the 15th Drug Discovery Innovation Forum. Among other papers I will discuss a Nature paper from last year: "Heterogeneous #aging across multiple #organ systems and prediction of chronic #disease and #mortality[1]" From the abstract: ➡"Biological aging of human #organ systems reflects the interplay of age, #chronicdisease, #lifestyle and #genetic risk. Using longitudinal #brainimaging and physiological phenotypes from the UK Biobank, we establish normative models of biological age for three brain and seven body systems. ➡Here we find that an organ’s biological age selectively influences the aging of other organ systems, revealing a multiorgan aging network. ➡We report organ age profiles for 16 chronic diseases, where advanced biological aging extends from the organ of primary disease to multiple systems. Advanced body age associates with several lifestyle and environmental factors, leukocyte telomere lengths and mortality risk, and predicts survival time (area under the curve of 0.77) and premature death (area under the curve of 0.86). Our work reveals the multisystem nature of human aging in health and chronic disease. It may enable early identification of individuals at increased risk of aging-related morbidity and inform new strategies to potentially limit organ-specific aging in such individuals." In addition to my contribution on the IHLAD channel, I would like to highlight a nature paper from 2021: "Achieving a three-dimensional #longevity dividend"   „Longer, healthier lives should be good for individual welfare as well as positive for the economy. However, concern exists because an #aging society is producing substantial shifts in the population structure and longevity gains are increasingly occurring in years of below-average #health and #economic activity.   This requires investment in healthy and productive aging to achieve a longevity dividend, which in turn involves exploiting the malleability of age and the additional time that longer lives bring…   Exploiting the malleability of age is a broad agenda extending well beyond the health sector to include behavior and socioeconomic factors. Healthy aging provides a platform for productive aging, as longer lives will require longer working careers. Increased employment among older workers has already been an important source of growth, but a number of barriers to productive aging need to be tackled. Continued employment for those over 50 years of age, more flexible career paths and a substantial growth in adult education are key priorities.“   Scott, A.J.
