The misalignment of timelines between #academia and #industry isn't just a minor inconvenience—it's a fundamental barrier to #innovation that we can no longer afford to ignore. But here's a thought: What if the 'Time Problem' isn't just a problem to be fixed but also an opportunity for radical transformation? If we rethink how research is funded, executed, and evaluated, we could turn this tension into a powerful driver of change. Maybe it's time for #universities to break free from the rigid structures that prioritize process over impact. Maybe we should redefine what success looks like in academia, valuing not just the number of publications but also the real-world applications of our research. Imagine a world where "time to impact" is as important as "time to publish." We need to ask ourselves: Are our long timelines serving the pursuit of knowledge, or are they slowing down the translation of that knowledge into meaningful, actionable outcomes?

The 'Time Problem' in Research and Industry Collaborations. In research, we need time. The culture and system around it for funding is anchored on this. Grants are open for applications once or twice a year and take a long time to process. Programs like CRCs take a long time to agree IP sharing regimes with collaborators. Teams think in longer timelines and optimise funding to spread the project over as long a period as possible. In industry, we have no time. We need to start today. And when we have started, we need to get to an outcome as soon as possible. Whilst a research collaboration brings a depth of possible value creation that would not be possible for industry to achieve on their own, putting it on a critical path introduces too much risk. From Industry's perspective, this means that research collaborations are often avoided or only focused on lower priority projects. Skepticism is the secret weapon of a good scientist. Do you agree? Elizabeth Holmes’ rise and fall is often seen as ambition gone wrong, but for me, it highlights something fundamental about being a scientist. You all know the story, right? If not, Google it! In biotech, we often face pressure to deliver results quickly. Boards, investors, and stakeholders expect success. But the best scientists don’t compromise on truth. Every assumption must be questioned, every result checked. This isn’t about slowing innovatio- it’s about ensuring it’s real. After my PhD, a reviewer requested that we replicate our results in another cell line. By then, I had transitioned to the industry, and another PhD student took over. When the results were repeated in different hands and cells, that was the best proof of success. At Prilenia, where I now work in the science team I collaborate with brilliant colleagues who push themselves to innovate while validating every idea with solid, fact-based science. It’s a company rooted in integrity and rigor.
