Over 20 years ago, a Silicon Valley guru advised me to avoid business books (‘a sugar rush without real nutrition’) and stick to history and science. And I’ve done that. But there are exceptions! My colleagues Martin Gonzalez and Joshua Yellin just authored this brilliant guide for startup companies on how to handle the No. 1 thing that destroys them - people dynamics. As a workshop facilitator, mentor and coach, I’ve spent time with hundreds of startups around the world over the past decade, and I know first-hand that these tools work. I’ve listened to and participated in a lot of conversation recently about the state of DEI/D&I/DIBs initiatives for companies after last year’s SCOTUS decision. Where other companies have scaled back or are less public about the work they do, our Legal & Public Policy team at LinkedIn continues to put in the work. What may have been a short term growth of D&I work for some companies, our team has found a long term investment. And like many good investments, the work is paying off. Whatever your company or business values, make sure that every employee embodies those values in all the work that they do. Would you trust a doctor that didn’t follow his own healthy living advice? Would you trust a company that is building AI but doesn’t use that AI technology? I feel very lucky that I can honestly say, here at LinkedIn we embody diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Had an enriching fireside chat yesterday with the Chief Diversity Equity and Inlusion Officer at Randstad, one of Cisco’s esteemed partners! 🌟 Grateful for leaders like Floss Aggrey for leaning into  the often overlooked D in DEI, disability! 💼💬 We delved into pivotal topics such as the power of language, emphasizing the significance of embracing the term "disability" without reservation. Using euphemistic ability centered language—e.g. differently abled--  actually perpetuates ableism. Instead, genuine inclusivity stems from acknowledging that disability is the one shared human experience we are bound to have, and that it’s ok to mess up as long as we are willing to learn. Dismantling ableism can be uncomfortable because Growth is uncomfortable, and that’s ok because to create a better world we have to first break down the barriers. 🌍💡 We underscored the importance of community-centered initiatives and the responsibility of proactive education within non-disabled circles. Recognizing the invaluable time and insight of disabled and neurodivergent individuals is paramount. ⏰🧠 Furthermore, we highlighted the indispensable role of infrastructure in fostering inclusivity, stressing the need for accessible and inclusive design. 💡 WE closed by sharing how disability, neuro-inclusion and accessibility are creating some of the best innovative solutions in the market and the importance of the continued focus on this work. 🌟🤝 Grateful for the opportunity to exchange insights and grow together!  #DiversityAndInclusion #NeuroInclusion #InclusiveDesign

With graduation season upon us, I’m getting lots of questions from recent grads (and their parents!) about the most important skills they need to prepare them for this new world of work where AI is changing everything. And I have a very clear answer - two of the most important skills are Grit and Agility. These are uniquely human skills that cannot and will not be displaced by AI.  I also have a very clear recommendation on where you go to get these skills: the Peace Corps. As I wrote in a blog post nearly 10 years ago (and these reflections are even more relevant today), the most valuable skills I have, I learned while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger. What is grit? Grit is persevering to achieve long-term goals, especially in the face of strong headwinds. It is basically sticking it out and working hard to make stuff happen. What is agility? This seems to be one of the most in demand skills and a natural bedfellow to grit. Those who are learning agile know what to do when they don't know what to do. They know the questions to ask, and the people to work with to find the answers they need Thank you Carol Spahn for inspiring me to write this!

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is a time for us to recognize and honor the contributions of the AAPI community across the globe. Our LinkedIn Asian Alliance (LIAA) ERG is embracing the theme of “Empowering Asian Voices,” to uplift and make connections that create value for us all. The theme makes me reflect on the critical role of allies in helping to empower and creating belonging experiences for those around us, including our AAPI colleagues. The power of Belonging is about making people feel seen, heard, and valued for who they truly are. At LinkedIn, we intentionally focus on belonging and embed it in the fabric of how we do our work. We drive the importance of allyship by creating a culture that’s grounded in daily, meaningful interactions and requires an effort from every person. This work begins by understanding what belonging means to our peers, our teams, and communities we may not be a part of.     I encourage each of you to engage in learning to better understand what it means to actively create a culture of allyship for AAPI professionals. With increased knowledge, it gives us the tools to empower Asian voices in a manner that effectively supports the career advancement of AAPI professionals and celebrating the diversity of our colleagues. 🎓✨ Just wrapped up an enlightening experience at Stanford University Graduate School of Business "Master Storytelling for Authentic Leadership" class with a powerful 2-minute final presentation. I opened up about how a fixed mindset once threatened to end my career before its inception. A huge shoutout to Jennifer Aaker for crafting such an insightful course! Earlier this year I brought the Google Operations Center leadership team together to talk about navigating the year ahead. Now more than ever, we find ourselves looking more critically at how we maneuver the healthy tension between creating stability and supporting our employees while continuing to innovate, adapt, and evolve our business. On the surface it may look like these scenarios are always a zero sum game, but they don’t have to be. As leaders we have the ability to be the bridge between our people and our partners, wielding the wisdom and patience to find the path that best supports everyone's needs. By fostering open communication, aligning incentives, and finding creative solutions, my team is aiming to build a foundation for mutual success. #Amaversary Celebrating seven years at Amazon today! The 'every-day' passes so swiftly, that a milestone like 'seven years' tends to make you a little reflective. If there is one thing that continually makes working at Amazon a delightful experience for me, it is our culture of invention. Sharing my favorite 4 quotes that reflect this culture best.  Could I have chosen 7 quotes for 7 years - sure! But that's another thing I've learnt - don't follow something just bcz it is status quo 😋 Here we go: 1. “We are stubborn on vision. We are flexible on details.” 2. “Our success at Amazon is a function of how many experiments we do per year, per month, per week, per day.
