A prime example regarding the lack of cost and price transparency in #healthcare. Reached-out to my #healthcaresystem Baylor Scott & White on some pricing for MRI(s) and this is the response received. Keep in mind my #healthplan is also through #bsw (#bswhp), and I followed the chatbot (precisely) on the BSW portal and completed all fields required (for submission) as you can see with the #data in the attached. As I selected "Shopping", I was not required to enter a "Facility" Can you imagine if "Bubba" from Anna, Texas, received this same response about providing CPT Codes? "Bubba" is not going to know what a CPT Code is and doesn't care about CPT Codes. He just wants a Cost Estimate. One has to wonder if this is just another tactic to ration #medicalcare in relation to making it difficult and/or confusing for the #patient or #member to obtain price and cost information on a common #medical imaging and/or diagnostic test(s)? This week I traveled around Texas with Mark Rainford and met with several health systems, ACOs and other entities, discussing the need and benefits of better data utilization, access, quality and the importance of data modelling. It’s amazing to learn of the various stages along the data usage maturity model different organizations are, and importantly, their use cases and outcomes for data optimisation. We are proud to be a part of HCA Healthcare, a leader in real-world, evidence-based research to improve healthcare everywhere. HCA Healthcare recently announced the NEJM Evidence publication of a large multi-state clinical study that identified a strategy, using algorithm-driven technology, to expand outbreak detection to hundreds of pathogens. The automated outbreak detection tool served as an early warning system to find and respond to potentially harmful hospital industry outbreaks. The study tested the automated outbreak detection method from 2019-2022 in a randomized clinical trial in 82 HCA Healthcare hospitals across 16 states. It was conducted through a longstanding scientific consortium including HCA Healthcare, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, UCI Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study is part of a growing body of work by the partners to reduce risk of healthcare-associated infections. As a digital health executive (and a consumer of healthcare) I've been reflecting on the significant rise in average U.S. family health insurance premiums over the years: 2000: $6k 2003: $9k 2006: $11k 2009: $13k 2012: $16k 2015: $18k 2018: $20k 2021: $22k 2024: $26k (projected) This marks a staggering 342% increase since 2000, averaging 6.1% per year, compared to the U.S. CPI inflation rate of 2.5% per year. When electronic health records (EHRs) were introduced, many of us (myself included) were optimistic about their potential to reduce costs. The ability to share lab results electronically, alert for drug interactions, and improve coordination of care seemed like a promising path toward lower healthcare expenditures. However, the anticipated outcomes haven't materialized as expected. As we now look toward AI for solutions, I find myself questioning whether it will truly address these escalating costs. Several factors may contribute to this issue: - The rising rates of obesity since 2000 has tripled. - An aging population with longer lifespans - Provider shortages and increasing burnout - Challenges with interoperability - Market dynamics and regulatory environments - Instances of fraud and abuse I'm interested to hear your thoughts: What do you believe are the primary drivers behind the rising costs. Healthcare Access Across the U.S.: Texas Among the Worst as Disparities Widen Forbes Advisor’s recent analysis reveals stark disparities in healthcare access across the U.S., highlighting how factors like insurance coverage, availability of primary care providers, and hospital resources vary widely by state. States in the West, such as Utah, Nevada, and Arizona, scored among the worst, with limited numbers of hospital beds and physicians contributing to poor accessibility. In contrast, states like Massachusetts and Connecticut offer far better healthcare access, boasting low uninsured rates and high numbers of primary care providers. Texas ranks as the third-worst state, facing high uninsured rates and limited healthcare infrastructure in many areas. For Texans, healthcare access often depends on proximity to larger cities, as rural and suburban areas can lack sufficient medical resources, leaving many without timely or affordable care.
