Often, I find that the tradeoff of attending a full-day event is just not worth it and you think, "my day would have been better spent working on ...." Sometimes events are just great. Last Thursday was such an event. Here is my reflection on it. Last Thursday at the Crowne Plaza Amsterdam, I had attended an inspiring JLABS event, hosted by Mandeep Dhillon and Fiona MacLaughlin. The was morning kicked off by the hosts with a workshop on (c)VC in biotech followed by a valuable legal workshop led by Kristopher Brown (he/him/his) from Goodwin LLC, setting the stage with crucial insights for biotech founders. The day was packed with both great connections and inspiring discussions. Lunch was a treat, and the afternoon sessions featured many of the biggest names in Dutch biotech, who generously shared stories and candid advice ('don't do it' to 'build your board with care') on growing and sustaining a successful biotech venture. I was especially glad to connect with some of the leaders in biotech like Ton Logtenberg and Sander van Deventer, exchanging thoughts on our mission to bring Generative AI into biotech teams to boost productivity and streamline workflows. Sander fueled to conversations at the drink by succinctly stating: “Medicines cure people, not doctors.” This perspective reminds us that it’s the innovation in the lab, driven by dedicated scientists, that ultimately delivers value to patients. This event underscored a powerful takeaway: while we learn from seasoned leaders, a new generation of biotech innovators is emerging, ready to reshape the field. By combining traditional knowledge with cutting-edge approaches, we can drive meaningful progress in the (Dutch) biotech sector. Hope to see you at the next worthwhile event and have a great Monday.

What an incredible discussion with our BioTech innovators during the A Bio Future event in #Dallas, Texas! Here were the key takeaways ⬇️ 🚀 Gabby Everett, Director of Business Operations at BioLabs Pegasus Park - North Texas, discussed the strength of collaboration in the #Texas BioTech community, which makes the region a strong place for innovation. 🌟 Michael Langer, Co-Founder of T.Rx Capital, discussed the importance of bringing together experts in both science and technology when building a team because of the recent trend of software, data science, and AI being used in BioTech. 🙌 Travis McCready, Head of Life Sciences America at JLL, shared how MassChallenge accelerates startups by helping founders connect to a broad community of experts to scale their business. 💡 Jinming Gao, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UT Southwestern Medical Center, shared lessons on Biotech innovation post-COVID-19, during which we witnessed the resources being gathered together to help society in the shortest time during the pandemic. The #MarylandMedTech Summit started off hot yesterday, with an expert panel discussing some trends in MedTech. Highlights from the informative conversation between George Davis, Kyparissia (Kyp) Sirinakis, Robert Storey, Youseph Yazdi, Henry Brem, M.D. Private capital is more risk-tolerant and better for innovation than Public funding in the long run, but it might be a tough fundraising environment in Private markets for the next 12 months. 😬 There's excitement about the potential for integrating medical devices and biology for applications like continuously monitoring the efficacy of drugs, but we have to remain focused on improving access to healthcare by developing devices that deliver real medical value at reasonable prices. Sorry, lasers... As an ecosystem, we also want to retain the amazing local technical, medical, and entrepreneurship talent in the region by increasing support and mentorship resources for startups through incubators, accelerators, and access to capital.
