The #LondonClimateResilienceReview makes several important points about how to prepare the city (and other cities) for the coming years of extreme weather and systemic risk. It was good to discuss it with edie.

What were previously regarded as one-in-100-year events can no longer be classified as such. Government policy mapping should not just rely on average forecasts but should prepare for extreme scenarios, including cascading and compounding risks. Pleased to see the latest issue of The #EnvironmentMagazine from CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) examining the theme of future cities with a particular focus on London. Timely, as the new government is developing a national industrial strategy to help places thrive. The #LocalGrowthPlans that will inform it are an opportunity to ensure much needed investment in infrastructure is underpinned by #climateresilience.   Seizing this opportunity has the potential to make the UK a leader in an innovative and high growth sector and can lead the way globally as the world deals with climate impacts. London has the potential to be a trailblazer for the UK on urban adaptation. The #LondonClimateResilienceReview sets out a clear pathway to achieve this, and calls for  more nature into cities to soak up urban flood water and cool neighbourhoods, combatting both dangerous flash flooding and deadly extreme heat. Award Criteria: - Integrated Climate Resilience Planning: The winning city will have a comprehensive and integrated climate resilience plan that addresses the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity. This includes strategies for water management and smart infrastructure development. - Water Scarcity Mitigation: The awarded city will showcase effective measures for mitigating water scarcity, such as the development of alternative water sources, efficient water use and conservation practices, and the implementation of advanced water recycling and reuse technologies. - Infrastructure Adaptability: Consideration will be given to cities with resilient infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather events and adapt to changing climate conditions. London is the financial capital of the world 🌏🌍🌎 It’s important we highlight the challenges and OPPORTUNITIES for health and climate during London Climate Action Week The cost of achieving the ambitious sustainable development targets is estimated at between $5.4 and $6.4 trillion per year between now and 2030 ref: UN The global cost of climate change damage is estimated to be between $1.7 trillion and $3.1 trillion per year by 2050. This includes the cost of damage to infrastructure, property, agriculture, and human health. This cost is expected to increase over time as the impacts of climate change become more severe. Research shows that 3.6 billion people already live in areas highly susceptible to climate change. Ref: WHO 75% of the Infrastructure That Will Exist in 2050 Doesn’t Exist Today. From transportation to flood protection, much of the world’s infrastructure will be built or overhauled in the coming decades. Valuable study from Australia for culturally relevant and informed climate adaptation! “Climate-readiness does not mean reinforcing inadequate technical solutions that shut us in, or barely remedial solutions. These reduce us to what philosopher Georgio Agamben termed a “bare life”, a condition that precludes the possibility of a good one. That need not be so. Our research is trialling adaptive practices, drawing on local knowledge of cool spaces (both natural and built), and sharing these practices across cultures.
