This career advice column hits a special note for me as a former international graduate student in the U.S. I'd like to amplify the important advice it has for international graduate students to intentionally pursue career development opportunities and achieve their career goals: - Focus on networking and creating a personal brand. - Develop your soft skills. - Improve your ability to effectively communicate. This is why we prioritize career development opportunities and resources for graduate students at University of Regina. " Rethinking the Path to Employment: A Call for Collective Action" In an era where job opportunities in core and IT sectors are diminishing, the responsibility falls on educational institutions, like ours, to proactively address the challenges faced by graduates. As the Chairman of the Career Development Centre, I recognize the pressing need for strategic initiatives that not only secure suitable employment for every graduate but also ensure their happiness and guard against underemployment. The current competitive landscape reveals a stark contrast between the opportunities available at renowned institutions and the neglect faced by students in countless technical and non-technical institutions. This stark divide requires a revolutionary approach to bridge the gap and pave the way for a respectable life for all degree holders. Our foremost commitment should be to provide high-quality education that equips students with skills, knowledge, and experiences relevant to the dynamic job market. It is not enough to merely secure job opportunities; we must prepare students comprehensively to excel in these opportunities. This commitment extends beyond the classroom, emphasizing character development and a lifestyle that fosters excellence. This collective responsibility is shared among various stakeholders – the government, industry, academia, students, and their families. As the government shapes policies, the industry creates opportunities, and academia imparts knowledge, students must also play an active role in their own success. The duty of students is to actively engage in their education, seek internships, and develop a proactive approach to their career path. To address the challenges faced by students in institutions where companies hesitate to recruit, we must initiate collaborative efforts. Industry-academia partnerships can create avenues for exposure, internships, and mentorship programs, ensuring that students from all institutions have equal access to opportunities. As we navigate this complex landscape, our goal should not be merely filling job vacancies but empowering graduates to thrive in their chosen careers. Let us collectively redefine success by fostering an environment where every student is equipped with the skills and mindset to succeed in the competitive world of work. By uniting as stakeholders, we can create a transformative impact, shaping a future where no student suffers from unemployment, and success is the norm rather than the exception.

🚨 Announcing the 2nd MEUS Debate Topic! 🚨 ⚖️ Proposal for a DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on improving and enforcing working conditions of trainees and combating regular employment relationships disguised as traineeships ⚖️ Did you know there are 3.1 million trainees across the EU, but nearly half of them are unpaid? Despite the growing trend of cross-border traineeships—21% in 2023, up from 9% in 2013—there’s still a pressing need to ensure quality traineeships that offer fair pay, proper learning content, and career growth opportunities. 🌍 This directive aims to address these challenges, building on the 2014 Council’s Quality Framework for Traineeships and protecting young people from exploitative practices. 🌍 Be part of the conversation at MEUS 2025 and help shape the future of youth employment! #MEUS2025
