🚨 Announcing the 2nd MEUS Debate Topic! 🚨 ⚖️ Proposal for a DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on improving and enforcing working conditions of trainees and combating regular employment relationships disguised as traineeships ⚖️ Did you know there are 3.1 million trainees across the EU, but nearly half of them are unpaid? Despite the growing trend of cross-border traineeships—21% in 2023, up from 9% in 2013—there’s still a pressing need to ensure quality traineeships that offer fair pay, proper learning content, and career growth opportunities. 🌍 This directive aims to address these challenges, building on the 2014 Council’s Quality Framework for Traineeships and protecting young people from exploitative practices. 🌍 Be part of the conversation at MEUS 2025 and help shape the future of youth employment! #MEUS2025

The Erasmus+ program is an EU initiative that supports education, training, youth, and sport across Europe through various opportunities such as study exchanges, internships, and partnerships. Erasmus+ is the European Union's program for mobility and education, active since 2014 as an evolution of the previous Erasmus program. It has a budget of 26.2 billion euros for the period 2021-2027 and aims to triple the number of participants by 2027. It targets not only university students but also primary and secondary schools, vocational training, adult education, and youth organizations. For universities, it offers mobility for study (3-12 months) or internships (3-12 months) with recognition of ECTS credits. For primary and secondary schools, it allows exchanges of teaching staff or groups of students. For vocational training, it finances internships abroad for apprentices, trainees, and recent graduates. For adult education, it covers staff updates, study visits, and educational trips. For youth organizations, it supports mobility projects for young people aged 13 to 30. It provides monthly scholarships to students to partially cover living and accommodation expenses abroad. The goal is to make study, training, and personal enrichment opportunities abroad accessible to everyone. #ErasmusPlus #EUeducation #YouthEmpowerment #StudyAbroad #SkillsForLife

📣 Employability and retention of international students and graduates 📣 Join us in Eindhoven 18 November for a day of inspiring presentations, intriguing workshops and wonderful discussions around the topic of employability and retention of international students. Context: International degree students often struggle to find internships and employment locally/in the region they study. In 2022 UCN, Arcada, FH Munster, SEND and Fontys UAS joined forces to increase the stay rate of their international students. During the 3-year project INTERLOCALITY we've gained insight into the main obstacles of students, employers, UAS and third-sector organisations in increasing the local employability of their international students. We have developed a monitoring tool, a system for systematic guidance of these students and online learning modules to increase the knowledge of lecturers, employers and others involved in the labour market issues of international students. We are organising an event to present the outcomes of our activities and the tools we developed. The programme includes a plenary session in the morning and interactive workshops in which practical tools and tips will be shared. Day 2️⃣ of July #EESCplenary Today's first debate focused on the Traineeship directive and reinforced quality framework for traineeships with Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Maxime Cerutti, Director of Social Affairs at BusinessEurope highlighted that there is need for #EUtraineeships and employers are actively investing in young people. However, we need to avoid creating unnecessary burden and not make it too difficult for employers to propose these opportunities. Our member Mira-Maria Danisman agreed that #EUtraineeships are a significant investment for companies, making learning opportunities available. By increasing the administrative and legal complexity, companies have less and less incentives and possibilities to provide traineeship opportunities. Also our member Jean-Michel Pottier stressed that a renewed legislative framework on #EUtraineeships should not become an additional administrative burden. This would be a counterproductive measure.

Youth unemployment continues to be pressing challenge across the EU. YES - traineeships offer a great chance for young individuals to gain practical and professional skills. On October 11, 2024, #Switzerland and the United States signed a landmark reciprocal exchange agreement for vocational students and apprentices to participate in an internship or training program between the United States and Switzerland alongside students from colleges and universities. With this agreement, which will take effect on November 30, 2024, it will be easier for young Swiss professionals to receive short-term training in the US, and for Americans to do the same in Switzerland. The agreement marks a significant step forward in expanding Swiss-U.S. bilateral cooperation on apprenticeships and other work-based learning programs, and it shows the willingness of both countries to keep on fostering the exchange of knowledge, skills and expertise.
