Start Where You Are, Do What You Can, Use What You Have In the fast-paced world of podcasting and freelancing, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the tools, skills, and resources we think we need. But sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply start with what we have right now. "Start where you are, do what you can, use what you have." – This quote resonates deeply with me. It reminds me that progress and success aren't about having the perfect setup or all the answers from the get-go. It's about taking that first step, making the most of our current resources, and consistently putting in the effort. When I started my podcasting journey 6 years ago, I didn't have a fancy studio or the best equipment. Till now I am exploring on my own. What I had was passion, a microphone, and a desktop. Through dedication and continuous learning, I've grown and refined my craft. Every episode, every edit, every interview was a step forward. To all my fellow creatives and freelancers: don't wait for the perfect moment. Start now. Use what you have and do what you can. Your journey and experiences will shape your success. Maintaining a consistent freelance workload (and income) is HARD. Especially at the moment 😅 We've all lost clients, been ghosted, and had dead cert projects disappear into the ether overnight. But having a consistent workload is SO important for planning ahead and working from a place of comfort, not desperation. As soon as I stopped scrambling to find new work on the 1st of every month and started generating ongoing work, things really changed. Sure, I still marketed myself and my business (we should NEVER stop doing that!), but I could take my foot off the gas a bit and plan for the future. So how do you get there? How do you get to a point where you have a consistent workload and income every single month? That's exactly what I'm covering in this week's episode of the It's Fine, I'm a Freelancer podcast. Reviews are fuel for freelancers 🔥 Go on. Ask. Toasty trade. I was struck by just how many Phil Matthews has on his website. I guess 20 years of doing a great job for people will do that. But... only because he asked for them. You can hear Phil on the Being Freelance podcast - or check out the video to hear why they work so well for him and his business. Don't forget, LinkedIn recommendations are a great trusted way of getting reviews/testimonials as a freelancer. But make sure you take quotes from them and get 'em on your website. When you go to buy a product or hire a business, I bet you look for reviews don't you? ---- Getting reviews is one those things that comes up in my course for new freelancers - you'll find it along with the podcast and community at beingfreelance.com

Make a list! This was the biggest thing that helped me when I first started freelancing and continue doing to this day. I made a list of all the things I needed to do and then I put them in order of importance. At the top of the list were the immediate things that needed to be done and at the bottom of the list were things that needed to be done but weren’t urgent (i.e updating my portfolio, getting client reviews, etc). Prioritising is the best advice I can give you, so you don’t feel like you have to do everything right now, all at once! This will help with fatigue, burn out, anxiety and overwhelm. He was in my ears every week... and then, after a pitch and a funny Zoom meeting with me and Lynne Testoni in early 2023, he was in Sydney, blowing everyone’s minds on stage at #TheContentByteSummit. It was surreal and amazing and people still say to me, ‘It was Ed’s talk that made me think about ...’ or ‘I changed my business and now I do this, after hearing Ed explain it at the Summit...’ This is no surprise - the freelance world is full of heroes. Ed is one of mine and, I know, one to many of you. He never stops sharing value and helping freelancers in his orbit. And his words, ideas and advice have shaped so many of our businesses. So I feel pretty lucky to be on Ed’s podcast this week. We're both big believers in the power of community and we chat about Rachel's List, the importance of creating a tribe around us, and how even a small one can add up to much needed support, referrals and overflow work.
