Focused work is a myth in this digital age, where we are flooded with notifications and dopamine-inducing content. For a writer, focused work matters. If there is a distraction, your character arcs will get scattered, and your manuscript will get convoluted. Worse, you can't even write a single word for the day. We have the support system now, but before 1900 the resources were scarce, mostly for women. For that sole reason, Woolf shared her thoughts on 'A Room of One's Own'. Even Kabir's teachings on mindful consumption starkly contrast with the excesses of the modern digital world, emphasizing the importance of balance without losing oneself in its serpentine grip. If you manage to tame your device and your desire, you can perform deep work. I never knew my phone had this feature because I never cared about exploring many of these features. This app or feature is called 'Zen', where I can block my device until the duration of my focused work is over. My usual sessions range from 40 minutes to 2 hours straight, and you can check out the result below. There was another app called 'Forest', but now it doesn't support most of its earlier features. The best way you can make the most of your time in your focused work is by DNDing your device and leaving it in another room. How often have you reread a sentence and wondered, “Why does this NOT feel right?” Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out, grammar mistakes have a way of sneaking into your work. And the frustrating part? Sometimes, you don’t even realise they're there until someone else points them out. Can you relate? Keep reading, I promise it’s worth it. After years of writing and editing, I’ve noticed some grammar mistakes that pop up over and over again — mistakes that can trip up even the most experienced writer. Here are five of the most common, and how you can easily fix them. You probably know them already. This should make you more conscious of them when next you write. 1. Misplaced commas I see this one a lot. Commas are tricky because they can completely change the meaning of a sentence. For example: - Let’s eat, Grandma. Vs Let’s eat Grandma. One involves a family meal, the other just placed Granny on the menu. The solution? Make sure commas separate ideas logically and check if they’re creating unintended meanings. 2. Confusing homophones Your/you’re, there/their/they’re — it doesn’t matter how experienced a writer you are, homophones still manage to slip through the cracks. The key is slowing down and double-checking that the word you’ve used matches the meaning you want. 3. Inconsistent tenses Jumping between past and present tense in the same piece is more common than you'd think. It’s an easy mistake to make, especially when you’re deep into the writing flow. When editing, do a quick “tense check” by scanning through a few paragraphs and ensuring the tense stays consistent throughout. 4. Subject-verb agreement errors Singular subjects take singular verbs, and plural subjects take plural verbs. Simple, right? But when you’re writing quickly, it’s easy to slip up: - The team of writers is meeting today. (not “are meeting” because “a team” is singular) A quick review during the editing stage can help catch these errors. 5. Using passive voice too often Passive voice isn’t always wrong, but overusing it can make your writing feel flat and distant. For example: - The book was written by her. (passive) - She wrote the book. (active) Active voice makes your writing clearer and more direct, so look for those passive constructions and see if they can be flipped. These are just a few of the grammar issues I’ve come across in my years as both a writer and an editor. The good news is, with a little extra attention, they’re easy to fix. Let's face it. AI is here to stay, and we need to learn to use it appropriately. However, it is not here to replace you. Medical writers evaluate and synthesize information from various sources. They assess the credibility and relevance of data. They can also rely on their intuition and experience to provide a more detailed understanding. These are all things that AI cannot do. To All the Book Marketers and Marketing Gurus on LinkedIn These days there are almost as many book marketers as there are books being published. And all of them want to be paid up front to market your book. Yet marketing a book online and in social media is like releasing another fish into the sea and thinking it's going to be the one to stand out and make a difference. Yes, some few will go viral because people love the book, but lets be real, more than 90% are nothing but income for you marketers and you don't really care whether it goes viral or not because you are looking for the next book to market. There's no real passion, zeal, and motivational power put into Book Marketing anymore because marketers do NOT have skin in the game. WHAT HAPPENED TO WORKING FOR COMMISSION in advertising and marketing where you get a CUT of the final sales? NOW THERE'S SKIN IN THE GAME. Agents used to take 10% to 20% commission on sales to promote an artist's work—so for them to make money, they had to make sales! That's skin in the game. How about you marketers start making deals with us authors and poets to receive 20% or 30% commission for selling our books instead of paying up front? Then I'd bet you would really care about putting some umph into your marketing efforts to your clients. I know this may ruffle some feathers, but I'm tired of hearing from 4 million book marketers that you want to market my book and that your marketing will be better than the 4 million other marketers who release the same fish into the same sea.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AUTHOR & WRITER Author vs Writer We often use the words author and writer interchangeably. But indeed both these words are quite different. A writer is a person who writes a book, article, or any literary piece, while an author is essentially the person who originates the idea, plot, or content of the work being written. At times, the author and writer can be the same person. In case of an autobiography, a person writes about the own life. So the author is expressing his own thoughts and ideas. But in cases like biographies, the writer is not the author. The ideas of thoughts of another are being written. Though the difference may not seem to be much, depending on the situation, the difference can be more. If you are writing a novel or short story based on a plot developed by self, you get to be known as the author of the novel. And if you are penning down someone else’s ideas or stories, you will be known as the writer of the work. Being a writer is at times easier than being an author. The reason being that an author has to create, develop, and communicate an idea, while a writer has to only communicate somebody else’s idea. An author may be excused if the writing skills are not that competent. But an author must have exceptional writing skills to be dominant in the field. Writing skills include the command over the language and the expressiveness with the play of words. These skills can be obtained through constant writing and may be an inborn talent in some. Only a skilled writer is capable of portraying ideas, events, and pictures through the mere use of words. When it comes to writing books, a person becomes an author only when the book is published. If your work is unpublished, and even if the idea is purely your own, you will still be considered as the person who wrote the work. And when your work is published you get to be known as the author of the work. So if you write a lot, but never get them published and out to the public, you remain a writer. An author can get the work copyrighted under the copyright laws. This ensures that nobody else steals or uses the original idea as it is. So only the author is always associated with that particular idea or work. To be an author one must have the capability to think and express the thoughts. And a write must have the capability to understand and convey an idea correctly to the readers. Summary 1. To be an author, the idea of your writing must be your own and you must get your work published. 2. An author must have a specific skill set but writer’s skill is suited to the job required. 3. You become an author when your books are published, but if your writings never publish, you remain a writer. 4. An author can get work copyrighted.
