Journalists… I hear you. I completely and utterly hear you.   You don’t want endless calls from PR people – that’s why many of you don’t share your telephone numbers.   You don’t want endless email chasers and follow ups – they clog up your already overwhelmed inbox – if you’re interested in a story, you’ll run it. If you want more information, you’ll ask for it.   As the PR person often playing piggy in the middle – between the media and our clients - it’s our job to understand and respect those boundaries, while securing the coverage we know we’ll be ultimately judged on.   I work incredibly hard to achieve the best results I can for my clients – indeed my professional nicknames are Tenacious D and the Hunter – but I'll never risk the reputation I’ve built over the past 20 years by breaking all the boundaries I know I need to respect when it comes to my relationships with the media.   If you’re working with a PR agency or freelancer, please understand, we’re not being lazy or complacent if we say ‘no’ to doing the third round of follow ups; we’ve not got a bad media network just because we don’t have a particular journalist’s phone number (who works from home); and please, please, don’t micromanage us – trust that we’re doing our job the very best we can, but that we need to balance what you want to achieve with what we know about our media.   PR can be a pretty thankless and very stressful job at times – so I just want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all the amazing clients and agencies I work with who do trust me to make the right calls when it comes to their comms.

Not always "giving the public what they want" is the best thing to do - specially when the public is an avid consumer of fake news and actually think they get informed by watching random people on TikTok. There's a huge difference between a journalist and an influencer and that's a good thing. Influencers produce content, journalists produce the news, stories. Can we have both? In some cases a journalist can be an influencer, but if they start producing content instead of news than that's not journalism. Content is something perishable, just for clicks and likes, for "engagement". content for the sake of content. Journalism is quite a different thing.

PR has a PR problem. We're quick with words, big on promises and light on delivery. We spin, we're shallow with no moral compass, hawking an firm here, an 'expert' there. We're always hustling, chasing the next client, the next story. Journalists say they don't want us, clients swear they don't need us. Top thing that has blown my mind in the launch week of Community Growth Academy: people buying annual memberships. Right from the start, on day one. Before CGA even proves itself. Case studies: why rushing is a recipe for failure "We'll just knock out a quick case study." How often have you heard (or said) that? Here's the truth: A powerful case study takes time. It's not something you can rush the night before a tender deadline. Why? Because a well-crafted case study in your tender submission can be the difference between winning and losing. It's not just about showcasing your past work - it's about demonstrating your understanding of the client's needs and your ability to deliver results. Key elements that need time and thought: Relevance to the current bid Clear problem-solution-result structure Quantifiable outcomes and ROI Client testimonials (if possible) Lessons learnt and continuous improvement Remember, your case study should tell a compelling story that resonates with the tender evaluators. It's your chance to show not just what you did, but how you think and approach challenges. So, next time you're preparing a tender, give yourself ample time to craft your case studies. Do they know you are a media company? The "they" I'm referring to is your advertisers. If all we were are is a print newspaper, then it would be pointless to attempt to brand ourselves as a media company. Newspapers made a pass at the whole media company things years ago and it didn't last. In my opinion, we simply weren't ready for it then. But with the plethora of digital advertising solutions most of us have as part of our marketing tool kit, there's no doubt we should be branding ourselves as media companies. We can do everything from targeted display ads, SEM, video (commercials, pre-roll, YouTube), radio, targeted email to social targeting. We can do the same things agencies can do, but do it at the local level. The reality is that many of us aren't taking advantage of this and telling every single advertiser in our communities. I'm not talking about replacing the masthead on the printed newspaper, but building an overarching media brand where the printed newspaper, our websites, and our digital agency (or digital marketing company) roll up under it. Digital. Print. Everything. Build a brand around that. When you think about it, we have an impressive solutions-oriented brand that we should be proud of. So why aren't we megaphoning that every chance we get? We should be visiting every single advertiser if for no other purpose than to tell them about all the amazing things we can do for their business. Writers, bloggers and LinkedIn posters LOVE lists, but sometimes they use them as a crutch. Here’s the ninth of nine suggestions on how to write better lists: **Make sure your photos match your points.** A friend of mine had had a blood clot, so I was especially interested to learn 10 Signs You May Have a Blood Clot in Your Leg. (See link in comments.) But the photos? They irritated me! They didn’t match the text. (Note: Since the time I first wrote a post about this, the site has CHANGED their photos. Woo hoo! They now do a much better job of matching the text.) Now, however, they’re removed the numbers and replaced them with bullets. Yikes!
