Make a list! This was the biggest thing that helped me when I first started freelancing and continue doing to this day. I made a list of all the things I needed to do and then I put them in order of importance. At the top of the list were the immediate things that needed to be done and at the bottom of the list were things that needed to be done but weren’t urgent (i.e updating my portfolio, getting client reviews, etc). Prioritising is the best advice I can give you, so you don’t feel like you have to do everything right now, all at once! This will help with fatigue, burn out, anxiety and overwhelm. Freelancers shouldn’t have to sacrifice their work/life balance! Here’s how… Yes, we are pretty much always on the clock, replying to emails whenever they land in our inbox, turning work around in 24 hours and so on… But there comes a point where you need to set a boundary. I’ll give you an example. My parents took me out for a really lovely meal last month to thank me for something that happened earlier on in the year. During the meal, I had an email come through asking for a quote on some work, I had two choices… I could either answer the email and be distracted from my family who mean the world to me and who I don’t get to spend much time with. OR… I could reply to the client later on when I have finished the meal and am back at home. I chose the second one - for me, family will always come first, I can reply to the client 2 hours later when we have finished our meal, which is still good customer service in my opinion! #podcast #EdGandia #community #freelancing One of the first podcasts I ever listened to, which gave me SO many tips and lightbulb moments, was Ed Gandia’s High Income Business Writing podcast. He was in my ears every week... and then, after a pitch and a funny Zoom meeting with me and Lynne Testoni in early 2023, he was in Sydney, blowing everyone’s minds on stage at #TheContentByteSummit. It was surreal and amazing and people still say to me, ‘It was Ed’s talk that made me think about ...’ or ‘I changed my business and now I do this, after hearing Ed explain it at the Summit...’ This is no surprise - the freelance world is full of heroes. Ed is one of mine and, I know, one to many of you. He never stops sharing value and helping freelancers in his orbit. And his words, ideas and advice have shaped so many of our businesses. So I feel pretty lucky to be on Ed’s podcast this week. We're both big believers in the power of community and we chat about Rachel's List, the importance of creating a tribe around us, and how even a small one can add up to much needed support, referrals and overflow work. Tune in if you're feeling isolated and crave that in your life / work - we talk about what to consider when building a community, who to approach (often, the people who light you up and perhaps have slightly different skillsets and audiences to you are the ones you'd like to meet up with more often, even informally). Kat & I were talking recently about what we both struggle with when it comes to being 'full time freelancers'. The main thing that popped up was loneliness... Yep, it's real my friends. It can be both a blessing and disguise. Here's some pointers we spoke about, that maybe can help you? 1. Me, Myself & I - getting used to being with yourself can be so empowering, don't underestimate the beauty of the 'me' time you can have. 2. Talk to someone - talking to a friend, family member or someone close to you can really help you unload some of the stresses of your day and feel more connected to people. 3. Get out there! It's easy to stay cooped up in your own little fort that it can often feel isolating. Use the most powerful resource there is (THE INTERNET, DUH) and google events in your field of work you can go to. You never know who you'll meet! 4. Listen to our podcast - the whole point we started this was to be the community hub for YOU to be seen and heard. So reach out to us to say hello or tell us what you are up too, we love hearing from all of you so don't be shy. Happy Monday everyone! Over here on Not The 9 to 5 podcast, we have just come to the end of our second series and I wanted to share some things I’ve learnt from the guests we’ve had on: 1. Always believe in yourself (even when no one else does). 2. Charge for every minute you work. 3. Make sure there’s a contract, agreement or email in place outlining fees, deadlines and expectations for EVERY single project you work on. 4. Self-love is the best way to keep going in this crazy freelance life. 5. Be in the now and present with every moment. 6. Cultivate a work/life balance - what’s the point of being freelance if you don’t have freedom over your life? 7. Keep true to your intentions for every piece of work you do. 8. Live the life YOU want to live, not what other people want for you. 9. Never stop learning and expanding your skill set. 10. If you don’t try, you’ll never know, so why not try it? Reflecting back on series 2, it’s made me so grateful to share a freelance community with so many wonderful people who are so willing to share their experiences to help other freelancers or potential freelancers, in order to live out their best life! Reviews are fuel for freelancers 🔥 Go on. Ask. Toasty trade. I was struck by just how many Phil Matthews has on his website. I guess 20 years of doing a great job for people will do that. But... only because he asked for them. You can hear Phil on the Being Freelance podcast - or check out the video to hear why they work so well for him and his business. Don't forget, LinkedIn recommendations are a great trusted way of getting reviews/testimonials as a freelancer. But make sure you take quotes from them and get 'em on your website. When you go to buy a product or hire a business, I bet you look for reviews don't you? ---- Getting reviews is one those things that comes up in my course for new freelancers - you'll find it along with the podcast and community at beingfreelance.com
