🤔 Have you also heard about how the last COP improved youth inclusion? Are you sure about that? And if so, in what terms? 👩🏼🤝👨🏽 We all know that youth, as future adults, are at the forefront of advocating for climate change, and it is evident how they are positively and strongly influencing the scene. Institutions and adults are starting to consider and involve them more and more compared to the past, recognizing their value, but at a certain level that is still not possible to be considered as a complete inclusion. Indeed at COP28, yes, the amount of youth who participated was definitely much higher compared to the previous COPs, which is a great and essential step forward since this opens the doors to many new opportunities for much more youth. However, let’s take a deeper look at this growth in youth participation from a more qualitative perspective. 🔍 Also according to the Youth Stocktake of UNFCCC Processes released by YOUNGO, what appears is that youth participating at COP28 were mainly restricted to observers. 𝐓𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐰𝐧: 7:44 𝐀𝐌, 24 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐮, 𝐂𝐎𝐏29 After 24 hours of intense negotiations last day, I was among the last few with my fellow advocates to leave the COP29 venue. These long hours were dedicated to ensuring that the voices of our civil society and constituency were heard—even as we spoke last after all Parties. The last three weeks have been challenging, with moments of frustration and limited progress, yet grounded in immense hope and determination. While a detailed summary of COP29’s outcomes will follow in the coming days, I want to take this moment to share a message for the Global South and our allies in the North: 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞. From the plenary sessions to grassroots pavilions, young leaders made their voices heard, shaping the narrative and driving bold commitments toward a sustainable future. Youth at the Forefront of Climate Action Youth delegates from around the globe brought energy, passion, and innovative ideas to the negotiation table. Their impact was undeniable, influencing key discussions on climate justice, renewable energy transitions, and climate finance. Through their tireless advocacy, they highlighted the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and holding leaders accountable for decisive action. Key moments included: Policy Advocacy: Youth delegates successfully pushed for more ambitious targets to phase out fossil fuels, resulting in unprecedented commitments by major stakeholders. Innovative Solutions: From showcasing cutting-edge renewable technologies to proposing new carbon offset mechanisms, young innovators set the tone for what’s possible. Climate Justice Demands: Youth representatives ensured that the voices of marginalized communities, including indigenous populations and small-island states, were amplified and addressed. Platforms for Engagement Throughout the conference, youth forums, workshops, and side events created spaces for young people to lead and collaborate. Their contributions were celebrated, from hosting panels with policymakers to organizing marches that drew global attention to their demands. For the first time in COP history, a Youth Climate Action Declaration was formally adopted, marking a turning point in the inclusion of youth in international decision-making. This landmark achievement is a testament to their resilience and determination. The Message Is Clear: Youth Are Not the Future—They Are the Now The message from COP29 is resounding: young people are not just advocates for change—they are architects of it. They’ve shown the world that their insights, energy, and vision are indispensable in building a greener, fairer planet. A Call to Continue the Momentum As we reflect on COP29, let us carry forward the lessons learned and commitments made. To all the youth who stood up and spoke out, your voices echoed far and wide, inspiring millions. How community action can equal global change After finishing her role with the UK’s youth delegation at Cop28, Southgate resident Arianna Abdul-Nour reflects on what was achieved and what still needs to be done. She tells us, "If nothing else, attending Cop taught me that community-level action can equal global level change. Now I am back in North London, it is organisations such as Enfield Climate Action Forum (EnCaf) that inspire me to keep the movement going locally. Known for its grassroots initiatives, EnCaf has spearheaded projects ranging from tree planting to educational campaigns on sustainable living. Their efforts resonate not only locally but also serve as inspirational models for similar grassroots movements worldwide. By empowering people to take tangible steps towards sustainability in their own communities, EnCaf embodies the ethos that collective action, no matter how small, can catalyse significant change. 🌍💚 Two of our Both ENDS colleagues, Marius and Daan, are currently at COP, proudly representing part of the Internationale Klimaatcoalitie! Together with civil society organisations in the Netherlands, we are pushing for climate justice and advocating for fair and ambitious Dutch climate policy at both national and international levels. 🌱 Marius is focused on sustainable trade and financial flows, calling for an end to financing fossil energy projects and supporting a fair and equitable energy transition. As a policy advocacy expert, he’s pushing for systemic change in the Netherlands and the European Union. 🔋💡 Daan is working with the Global Alliance For Green And Gender Action (GAGGA), a program dedicated to gender, climate, and environmental justice. He brings expertise on climate funds, including the GCF, and works on ensuring local communities have access to climate finance. ⚖️💵 At events like COP, it’s crucial to amplify voices and issues that are often sidelined. Marius and Daan are there to ensure themes like trade and climate, climate justice financing, and gender are front and center. COP30 is just around the corner, and I’m already working to ensure that the real climate activists—the ones who are out there leading grassroots movements, mobilizing communities, and driving real impact—have the platform they deserve. While the end of #COP29 draws near on the 22nd of November, women and girls still continue to pay dearly for the climate crisis but as agents of change they're building and leading movements that will create a just and sustainable world. Approaches such as decolonised #climatefinancing give grassroots organisations the autonomy and choice to respond swiftly to emergencies brought on by climate change.
