🚨 EU Deforestation Law Delay: A Dangerous Setback 🚨 On Dec 4th, the European Parliament voted to delay the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by a year, following lobbying from businesses and non-EU governments. This decision comes as devastating forest fires continue to ravage South America, including the Amazon and Pantanal regions. 🌍🔥 With 37,000 sq km of tropical forest lost in 2023 alone, the delay sends the wrong signal: that environmental standards are negotiable. Every year the law is postponed, we lose 2,300 sq km of forest, accelerating climate change and biodiversity loss. Both ENDS and global partners continue to call for urgent action. The time for delays is over—our planet's forests and ecosystems are in critical danger. 🌳 We must act now to protect vital habitats and prevent further destruction. Learn more about the EUDR and why it's crucial for our future: https://lnkd.in/eEm4hbnM #Deforestation #ClimateAction #EU #EUDR #ProtectOurForests #Biodiversity #NoTimeToWaste

#NietInMijnNaam

For me, #COP16Riyadh of UN Convention to Combat Desertification has come to an end, although the negotiators still need to go on to tackle the last hurdles like drought and the budget, and I hope for them, that they can reach a decision between now and today's afternoon. Together with #Drynet and the CSO community present here, I've been advocating for action on: 1) inclusive decision-making processes, both at the national level and within the UNCCD; 2) gender equality in policies and proceses; 3) the recognition of agroecology as a solution to combat desertification, land degradation and drought; 4) land rights governance; 5) access to finance for locally led initiatives; and 6) eliminating harmful subsidies for land-degrading agriculture, mining, and land conversion for the energy transition. I’m curious to see if our advocacy is reflected in the COP16 decisions. A few reflections from the side events we organised: Yesterday, we discussed "CSO participation in the UNCCD". I was happy to join a conversation between Kader Baba (TMG Think Tank for Sustainability), Catarina Carvalho (UN Women), Judith Rosendahl (EU delegate, Germany), and Ramesh Sharma (EKTA NORTH EAST INDIA) and 30 enthusiastic participants in the room. My three take-aways are: 1. Create mechanisms for dialogue and joint strategising among CSOs and the caucuses of Youth, Women and Indigenous Peoples. 2. Strengthen the CSO panel through staggered terms, formal handovers, and a online knowledge bank to maintain institutional memory. 3. Support enhanced engagement between national policy makers and local groups and CSOs to align global commitments with local priorities and initiatives. On Wednesday, Beth of Landesa and I moderated a side event on unlocking finance for women-led initiatives. Mino RAMAROSON from Huairou Commission gave an excellent introduction on linking women-led initiatives to funding opportunities, while Laura from Robert Bosch Stiftung shared insights into the opportunities and challenges funders face when supporting these initiatives. And after these inspiring introductions, we tapped into the wisdom of the audience. Here are the three takeaways from our discussion: 1. Understand the different perspectives on 'impact': what it means to donors & funders versus what it means to women’s groups. 2. Rethink how we measure impact—should it be accountability through reports and Excel sheets, or trust built through testimonials, co-creation, and collaboration? 3. Engage in joint narrative building: how can we match the holistic needs of women’s groups with the indicators and themes funders require? I really enjoyed preparing and hosting these events together with Check Abdel Kader Baba, Frederike Klümper, Laura Rahmeier and Beth Roberts: thank you! And last but not least: a special thank-you to my dear Drynet colleagues. It is a true honour to work with such dedicated, professional, intelligent, and kind people. #OurLandOurFuture #UNited4Land

Only through bold and systemic changes can we create a future where investment serves as a force for life, sustainability, and equity. Read The Entebbe Declaration 👇🏿
Together with over 40 CSOs, we’re demanding an overhaul of the current investment frameworks that harm communities and climate in many countries. Investment treaties like #BITs or the Energy Charter Treaty perpetuate global inequalities and exacerbate systemic failures. They prioritise corporate profits over public welfare, enabling abuses through mechanisms like Investor-State Dispute Settlement. For Africa, the impact has been particularly devastating. Extractive systems tied to these agreements drain the continent’s wealth and resources while leaving behind environmental destruction and social harm. The Entebbe Declaration, developed by African CSOs such as Seatini Uganda with support from organisations like Both ENDS SOMO, Transnational Institute and ActionAid Nederland, offers a clear and actionable roadmap for change.
