🤯 Talking with many #youth at #COP28, several of them mentioned the difficulty of feeling prepared for the conference. It’s not easy to stay ready and follow what happens at COP, even if you are present there (and I can confirm this from personal experience). The topics discussed are vast and diverse, the conference area is enormous, and time flies faster than it seems (as always!). 🫠 Despite the high effort put into seeking information, understanding who will be present, and knowing which debates will be held, a sense of confusion and unpreparedness is still present, especially for first-time attendees. Could this be due to a gap in the information system and pre-COP communication? 🌎 For instance, #LossAndDamage is among the hot topics of recent COPs, as evidenced by the creation of its fund at COP27 and its operationalisation during the first day of COP28. So, how many youth were aware of it, and what did they know about it? 📰 What emerged is that the majority of the youth interviewed have probably been influenced by #media coverage in forming their opinions, particularly those with a more general and superficial awareness of the topic. So this brings to another question: how can media better #support youth on #technicaltopics like this, making them more #accessible and #engaging? How community action can equal global change After finishing her role with the UK’s youth delegation at Cop28, Southgate resident Arianna Abdul-Nour reflects on what was achieved and what still needs to be done. She tells us, "If nothing else, attending Cop taught me that community-level action can equal global level change. Now I am back in North London, it is organisations such as Enfield Climate Action Forum (EnCaf) that inspire me to keep the movement going locally. Known for its grassroots initiatives, EnCaf has spearheaded projects ranging from tree planting to educational campaigns on sustainable living. Their efforts resonate not only locally but also serve as inspirational models for similar grassroots movements worldwide. By empowering people to take tangible steps towards sustainability in their own communities, EnCaf embodies the ethos that collective action, no matter how small, can catalyse significant change. Here's is my perspective on being at COP16: As I step into the bustling venue of COP16, I can feel the weight of urgency and the buzz of determination. The air is electric with the collective energy of global leaders, activists, and experts gathered to tackle the pressing issues of our time. The gravity of the climate crisis looms large, but so does the opportunity for transformative change. Being at COP16 is a privilege and a responsibility. It's a chance to bear witness to the negotiations, the debates, and the moments of breakthrough. It's an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and to learn from diverse perspectives. As I navigate the crowded halls, I'm struck by the sheer scale of the challenge before us. But I'm also heartened by the resilience, creativity, and dedication on display. From the impassioned pleas of climate activists to the technical expertise of scientists and policymakers, every voice matters. In this crucible of global cooperation, we're forging a new path forward. We're confronting the inconvenient truths and embracing the inconvenient solutions. We're recognizing the intersections between climate justice, human rights, and sustainable development. As the negotiations unfold, I'm reminded that COP16 is not just a conference – it's a catalyst for a global movement. It's a moment to mobilize, to organize, and to demand action from ourselves and our leaders. Being at COP16 is a call to arms, a summons to join the fight for a livable future. 🌍 Support Indigenous Youth & Women Leaders at COP29! As the global community gathers for COP29 in a few days to come, to address the climate crisis, Indigenous youth and women have an essential role to play. These voices, especially from communities on the frontlines of climate change, bring crucial perspectives and lived experiences that shape effective, just climate solutions. This year, Spring of the ASAL we’re raising funds to send a delegation of 10 Indigenous youth and women to COP29, where they can contribute directly to global climate dialogues. Their participation and we’ve made arrangements to ensure they meaningfully engage including in negotiations, side events, speaking roles, action days & film screening. This is vital in; • Amplifying voices from the communities most impacted by climate change • Advocating for climate justice and sustainable solutions • Bringing actionable insights and solutions from Indigenous practices We are however challenged due to the lack of funding risking our efforts of ensuring inclusion in this especially critical COP! The recent #COP29 brings new opportunities and challenges to the climate action landscape. A pressing question arises: What’s next for climate action? Here’s a brief summary of what transpired and was agreed upon at COP29 in Azerbaijan, with nearly 200 countries in attendance: 🌿 Bolder #ClimateFinance goals were set, with commitments to triple financial support to developing countries, reaching $300 billion annually by 2035. 🌿 Significant progress was achieved on global #CarbonMarkets under the Paris Agreement, with the final building blocks of Article 6 completed after 10 years of development. 🌿 Transparency in #ClimateReporting and the effectiveness of climate policies took center stage, aiming to make countries' NDCs and net-zero pathways more reliable and actionable. 🌿 While climate remained the core focus, other critical aspects were also addressed, including gender equality, youth empowerment, and civil society participation. These efforts underline the importance of partnerships and #coalitions for building a more sustainable and equitable world. Despite skepticism about the effectiveness and integrity of certain outcomes, it is essential to recognize the progress made. The COP29 has openned some meaningful dialogues, and it's now to work on them. Here are some key considerations and questions as we navigate the way forward: 💡 When operationalizing country-to-country trading and a carbon crediting mechanism, the absence of stringent rules risks enabling flawed emissions trading and undermining authentic decarbonization efforts. Experts from Carbon Market Watch highlight that countries seem to accept to deal with consequences rather than prevent them. 💡 The agreement to increase climate finance to $300 billion annually is a significant step, but many climate activists argue that it remains insufficient for the Global South to effectively implement climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, as well as to contribute to global decarbonization. 💡 The paradox of growth persists. Some voices, including The Guardian, have raised concerns about the participation of actors with vested interests in fossil fuels in critical climate discussions, calling for more robust governance to ensure impartiality. One clear takeaway is the urgency to accelerate our collective efforts. Topics covered included: 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Real-world case studies on how countries are scaling up clean energy to meet climate targets.💡 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Tangible pathways for mobilizing the necessary financial flows to bridge the implementation gap.📈 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: Progress reports on mechanisms ensuring vulnerable countries receive support to manage climate impacts.🌿 The halls were buzzing with the urgency of implementation, but also with a spirit of collaboration.
