How community action can equal global change After finishing her role with the UK’s youth delegation at Cop28, Southgate resident Arianna Abdul-Nour reflects on what was achieved and what still needs to be done. She tells us, "If nothing else, attending Cop taught me that community-level action can equal global level change. Now I am back in North London, it is organisations such as Enfield Climate Action Forum (EnCaf) that inspire me to keep the movement going locally. Known for its grassroots initiatives, EnCaf has spearheaded projects ranging from tree planting to educational campaigns on sustainable living. Their efforts resonate not only locally but also serve as inspirational models for similar grassroots movements worldwide. By empowering people to take tangible steps towards sustainability in their own communities, EnCaf embodies the ethos that collective action, no matter how small, can catalyse significant change. They offer a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of ordinary citizens coming together to address extraordinary challenges." Read more at https://lnkd.in/e_kuKEwG

𝐓𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐰𝐧: 7:44 𝐀𝐌, 24 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐮, 𝐂𝐎𝐏29 After 24 hours of intense negotiations last day, I was among the last few with my fellow advocates to leave the COP29 venue. These long hours were dedicated to ensuring that the voices of our civil society and constituency were heard—even as we spoke last after all Parties. The last three weeks have been challenging, with moments of frustration and limited progress, yet grounded in immense hope and determination. While a detailed summary of COP29’s outcomes will follow in the coming days, I want to take this moment to share a message for the Global South and our allies in the North: 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞. 🤯 Talking with many #youth at #COP28, several of them mentioned the difficulty of feeling prepared for the conference. It’s not easy to stay ready and follow what happens at COP, even if you are present there (and I can confirm this from personal experience). The topics discussed are vast and diverse, the conference area is enormous, and time flies faster than it seems (as always!). 🫠 Despite the high effort put into seeking information, understanding who will be present, and knowing which debates will be held, a sense of confusion and unpreparedness is still present, especially for first-time attendees. Could this be due to a gap in the information system and pre-COP communication? 🌎 For instance, #LossAndDamage is among the hot topics of recent COPs, as evidenced by the creation of its fund at COP27 and its operationalisation during the first day of COP28. So, how many youth were aware of it, and what did they know about it? 📰 What emerged is that the majority of the youth interviewed have probably been influenced by #media coverage in forming their opinions, particularly those with a more general and superficial awareness of the topic. So this brings to another question: how can media better #support youth on #technicaltopics like this, making them more #accessible and #engaging? The objective would be to create #curiosity and develop #criticalthinking, going beyond summarising brief information. 🔍 Find out more about these points in my new article for Rethinking Climate and let me know your thoughts!
🗣️ Loss & Damage has been among the most discussed topics of this last COP, starting with its fund operationalisation during the first day of the conference. 🤔 So, how much did youth know about it? Was their awareness and knowledge technical and well-supported, or was it more general and on the surface? And finally, what role do media play in this matter? 🔎 Find out the answers to these questions in this new article by Barbara Monticelli 👇🏻 #LossAndDamage #youth #media #ClimateChange #RethinkingClimate #Cop28

A Global Just Green Transition at COP29 💚⚖️ Today, Anne Højer Simonsen from Danish Industry (DI) hosted a panel debate at COP29 on how we can make the global green transition more inclusive to women and young people. We wish to extend our heartfelt thank you to the speakers whose contributions and insights can help drive a just green transition 🙏 - Sostina Takure, Coordinator, DanChurch Aid Zimbabwe - Sigrid Friis, Member of the European Parliament, Renew Europe - Sigurd Seindal Krabbe, UN Youth Delegate - Szilvia Lehel, Global Thematic Lead, Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ), UN Women - Peter Vangsbo, Associate Director of Climate and Sustainability Services, Arup - @Ayshka Najib, Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ) Youth Leader Here are three key takeaways from the debate: 📝 Inclusive Policy Making: It is crucial to involve both gender and youth perspectives in policy-making processes to ensure that the green transition benefits all segments of society. Inclusivity leads to more robust and sustainable solutions. 📚 Empowerment Through Education: Education and capacity building are fundamental in empowering women and youth to take active roles in climate action. Investing in education will create future leaders who are equipped to drive positive change. 🌏 Global Solidarity: A fair green transition requires global solidarity, particularly with vulnerable countries. Collaborative efforts and international support are essential to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change and promote equity. DI will take these perspectives with us as we work with our partners from the public, private, and civil society sectors on advancing climate action. #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan #JustGreenTransition #GenderEquality #YouthEmpowerment #ClimateAction

What shocked me most at COP16 on Desertification is: Absense of global companies! I thought: maybe they don’t want to be here? Or fear showing their work? I met a few fellow speakers, but that’s it. No stands, no presence, nothing. Turns out, it’s really hard for businesses to get accreditations to COPs! This is the first COP that has Business4Land agenda and space (in the Blue zone). How can we exclude global companies from such critical global issues? Especially when we need to restore 1 billion hectares in just 10 years! We need a radical collaboration of governments, businesses and innovative solutions, working together for land. 🌱 No land = No life. It’s that simple. Thank you, UNCCD G20 Global Land Initiative for inviting us here! Honoured to speak about our work at Earth Plus at such high-profile event. 🙏 Let me tell you: the need for regenerative businesses is now greater than ever! 🌱

#YouthVoices for Climate Action. At COP29 Azerbaijan, I was honored to meet with an extraordinary delegation of young leaders from the Global South, aged 13 to 16, brought together by Instituto Alana through the Children for Nature Program. These passionate advocates shared their "Manifesto for Justice for Children," a compelling vision for climate action rooted in equity, inclusion, and the recognition of children’s rights to a healthy and sustainable future. This meeting, part of what we proudly call #COPforChildren, highlighted the critical need to elevate youth voices in shaping our planet's future. During our exchange, these young leaders presented bold recommendations, emphasizing: ✅ Rapid emissions reductions ✅ Increased climate funding for the Global South ✅ Protection and restoration of ecosystems through reforestation and sustainable agriculture ✅ Conservation of oceans to combat biodiversity loss and regulate the global climate ✅ A just energy transition ✅ Greater participation of children in decision-making It was inspiring to hear their perspectives and share insights on how they can amplify their voices and drive meaningful change. Their courage and clarity reaffirm the importance of intergenerational collaboration in the fight against climate change. Let us ensure that children—our future—are not just seen but truly heard in these critical global discussions. Their passion and vision light the path toward a sustainable, just, and inclusive world. ✅ Learn more about COP for Children: https://lnkd.in/dZMj9myU ✅ Read the powerful Children’s Manifesto: https://lnkd.in/de_-gAhC ✅ Discover VaquitasNFT by David Andujo Luján: https://vaquitasnft.com #ChildrenForNature #GlobalSouth #YouthLeadership #ClimateAction #NatureConservation #JusticeForChildren #COP29 #IntergenerationalChange

🌍 Reflecting on COP29: Who should have a seat at the table? 🌍 As our girl CFigz (Christiana Figueres to others) rightly points out, “The COP process is an essential and irreplaceable vehicle for supporting the multilateral, multi-sectoral, systemic change we urgently need. Now more than ever.” However, does COP amplify the voices of those who really need it or is it a circus of influencers, best-intentions, and lobbyists? 💬 The Power of Face-to-Face Dialogue: Global leaders working together face to face is vital. Indigenous leaders and representatives from the Global South bring critical perspectives often overlooked at events unlike COP. These voices, which represent those most impacted yet least responsible for the crisis, speaking their truth, are central to achieving equitable climate action. ✊ Activists Driving Accountability: Once again, activists have played a crucial role in holding governments accountable. Their pressure during COP29 spotlighted the gaps in global commitments and pushed negotiators further towards climate action. COP host countries must allow for activist voices to be heard. ⛔ The Harm of Fossil Fuel Lobbying: Alarmingly, over 1,700 fossil fuel lobbyists were present at COP29, outweighing delegations from many vulnerable nations. (although down from 2,456 at COP28 according to Global Witness) . These lobbyists have no place at COP and undermine the urgency of the transition to renewable energies. ⭕ Reconsidering COP’s Carbon Footprint: Is the event now for those who see it as a networking opportunity? This culture adds to the negative impact of travel and accommodation emissions. Never mind the pressure on host countries to find big venues, provide more catering and create more waste. We have heard from plenty outside the sustainability realm, questioning the need for this large attendance… and we aren’t able to give a sound answer. With COP29’s attendance numbers down on last year, does this mean that COP28 was the peak of the excess? We hope so. COP remains vital in amplifying underrepresented voices and holding powerful industries accountable. It should remain for those who can significantly push for the change and action we need to see. #COP29 #Climatefinance #climatecrisis #hope #climateaction #sustainability

🌍 Support Indigenous Youth & Women Leaders at COP29! As the global community gathers for COP29 in a few days to come, to address the climate crisis, Indigenous youth and women have an essential role to play. These voices, especially from communities on the frontlines of climate change, bring crucial perspectives and lived experiences that shape effective, just climate solutions. This year, Spring of the ASAL we’re raising funds to send a delegation of 10 Indigenous youth and women to COP29, where they can contribute directly to global climate dialogues. Their participation and we’ve made arrangements to ensure they meaningfully engage including in negotiations, side events, speaking roles, action days & film screening. This is vital in; • Amplifying voices from the communities most impacted by climate change • Advocating for climate justice and sustainable solutions • Bringing actionable insights and solutions from Indigenous practices We are however challenged due to the lack of funding risking our efforts of ensuring inclusion in this especially critical COP! If you are in a position to help please reach out- [email protected], or share to help make COP29 accessible to those whose voices matter most. #ClimateJustice #COP29 #IndigenousLeadership #YouthForClimate #Support

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) ended on Wednesday, with an agreement to transition away from fossil fuels. It is a bit disappointing to think after 28 years of climate negotiations, this is as far as we progressed. What is not disappointing is to see how children have continued to take action and to advocate for change. Nomin, from Mongolia, is a girl, who makes me proud to work at World Vision and brings me hope. She was selected to be a child leader because she has a long history of activism on environmental issues. At COP 28, she participated at a 'climate challenges faced by the youth' session and was an effective advocate with global leaders and decision-makers. She even met with the Taoiseach of Ireland, Leo Varadkar. Now back in Mongolia, Nomin plans to continue advocating for investment in renewable energy and planting trees. Her goal is not only to raise her voice, but to take action to make the world a safer and healthier place for future generations. We at World Vision are proud to support boys and girls like Nomin, who have demonstrated time and again that given respect and opportunity, can be effective agents of change, at all levels of government. 🌍💚 Two of our Both ENDS colleagues, Marius and Daan, are currently at COP, proudly representing part of the Internationale Klimaatcoalitie! Together with civil society organisations in the Netherlands, we are pushing for climate justice and advocating for fair and ambitious Dutch climate policy at both national and international levels. 🌱 Marius is focused on sustainable trade and financial flows, calling for an end to financing fossil energy projects and supporting a fair and equitable energy transition. As a policy advocacy expert, he’s pushing for systemic change in the Netherlands and the European Union. 🔋💡 Daan is working with the Global Alliance For Green And Gender Action (GAGGA), a program dedicated to gender, climate, and environmental justice. He brings expertise on climate funds, including the GCF, and works on ensuring local communities have access to climate finance. ⚖️💵 At events like COP, it’s crucial to amplify voices and issues that are often sidelined. Marius and Daan are there to ensure themes like trade and climate, climate justice financing, and gender are front and center.
