As #COP29 gets underway in Baku, this is a timely reminder of the need for climate COPs to be truly #inclusive. Addressing the climate crisis and moving forward on #climateaction requires sharing and learning across a broad range of actors. Those working to reduce emissions, build resilience at all levels, adapt to the impacts of #climatechange and ensure investment is effective and fair include not only the parties to the #UNFCCC and the #ParisAgreement. Non-state actors including academics, civil society, philanthropists, scientists, corporations, local communities, sub-national jurisdictions, farmers, Indigenous leaders, disability sector representatives, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community bring their expertise and solutions to the global stage. To solve such a range of issues requires us all to be informed, engaged, and working together in new ways. As we work to make the process of climate dialogues and negotiations more effective within the international legal system, it's essential to underpin the need to build inclusive opportunities for local experiences to inform global decisions. Having all voices not only at the table and behind the podium - but truly being heard - is critical across entire COP processes (not just the two weeks that culminates those processes). However, the nation's heavy reliance on oil and gas—accounting for over 90% of its export revenues—raises questions about its commitment to sustainable energy transitions. Critics point to the country's environmental record and human rights issues, suggesting that these factors could influence the effectiveness of the conference. --🔍 Key Focus Areas Climate Finance: A central topic at COP29 is the mobilization of financial resources to support developing countries in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Why am I joining COP 29? Why should it matter to us? In a day, I will head to Baku, Azerbaijan, the birthplace of the oil industry, where the 29th Conference of the Parties (#COP29) will take place. This event will bring together world leaders, negotiators, scientists, and various stakeholders to advance global efforts in addressing climate change. Hosting COP 29 in Baku, a country with a rich history in the oil industry, underscores the critical intersection of energy and climate policy. The decisions made at COP 29 will directly influence whether future generations inherit a world of abundance or one plagued by scarcity. It is essential that the voices of youth and children’s aspirations are woven into this critical dialogue, as they stand to face the consequences of our actions today. My upcoming participation in COP 29 as a Sri Lanka National Delegate holds significant importance for advocating Youth-centered Climate Action. COP is a multifaceted negotiation platform that extends beyond carbon emissions. This broad scope of negotiations reflects the interconnected nature of climate action and the diverse priorities of participating nations. By participating in this high-stakes game, I aim to enhance the voices of young generation, ensuring that their needs and creative solutions are not overlooked amid these negotiations. I hope to inspire discussions that not only acknowledge the climate crisis but also empower young people to take active roles in driving resilience and sustainability in their communities. Together, we can push for a future that prioritizes the rights and well-being of children and youth while addressing the global challenges of climate change. The effectiveness of COP is often contested due to several reasons. There are gaps between the ambitious targets set and the actual implementation of policies. Political and economic interests can hinder consensus, and the lack of binding enforcement mechanisms can undermine accountability. Additionally, disagreements over climate finance can create tensions between developed and developing nations. Despite these challenges, maintaining hope and support for collaborative dialogues like COP 29 is crucial. COP 29 provides a unique global platform for almost every country to come together and discuss climate action. It facilitates the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and technological innovations, which can accelerate solutions to combat climate change. While progress may be slow and incremental, each COP builds on the previous ones, gradually moving the world closer to achieving climate goals. By supporting and participating in COP 29, we can continue to push for stronger climate action, foster international cooperation, and work towards a sustainable future. 🌍 As COP29 commences in Baku, Azerbaijan, I am deeply concerned about the future of global climate commitments, especially following the re-election of President Trump in the U.S. His previous administration’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement raises apprehensions about the U.S.’s dedication to climate action. Adding to this, there are mounting concerns that Azerbaijan may be leveraging its COP29 presidency to secure oil and gas deals, potentially compromising the summit’s objectives. Reports indicate that certain officials may be facilitating fossil fuel agreements in exchange for sponsorships. This risks undermining the integrity of the COP process, which is meant to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, not entrench reliance on fossil fuels. We cannot allow bad actors to hijack the climate action agenda for short-term gains. This summit must focus on achieving real progress in reducing emissions, protecting ecosystems, and supporting vulnerable communities. Climate action is a shared, global responsibility, and we must hold all leaders accountable to it. In this critical moment, we call on the @UK Government to demonstrate unwavering leadership, setting a strong example by championing ambitious climate policies, driving meaningful change, and filling any gaps in commitment. Our Mission at COP 29: Leading the Global South’s Voice for Climate Justice At COP 29 in Baku, the Climate Hub Forum (CHF) stood as a beacon of advocacy for the Global South, championing the rights of those disproportionately affected by climate change. Representing vulnerable nations and communities, CHF actively participated in high-level meetings, workshops, and collaborative dialogues, emphasizing the urgent need for equity, climate justice, and actionable commitments from global powers. Climate Justice: A Call to Responsibility: Our message was clear: the people and regions that suffer most without contributing significantly to climate change must be at the heart of global decisions. With the Global North responsible for over 75% of historical emissions, it is imperative that they take accountability through fair financing, technology transfers, and transformative policies. Climate justice demands actions that go beyond pledges—rooted in reparations and support for adaptation, resilience, and sustainable development in the Global South. Strategic Collaborations at COP 29: CHF took a leading role in convening critical sessions at the Pakistan Pavilion, fostering dialogues on sustainable development, climate finance, and innovative approaches to climate resilience. Our partnerships with global stakeholders, including Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change, further strengthened these initiatives, demonstrating how collaboration can drive meaningful progress. By creating inclusive spaces, CHF ensured that voices from vulnerable communities were heard, and practical solutions were shared globally. Our mission transcends national or institutional boundaries. As an independent advocacy platform, CHF calls for powerful and unified collaborations that prioritize people, the planet, and nature above political or economic interests. Beyond negotiation rooms and press conferences, COP29 is about the lives, environments, and communities that are inseparably connected in this shared mission. As humans, we’re more than just observers—we’re inhabitants of this planet, alongside ecosystems that form the very fabric of life. Every policy discussed and every initiative launched is, at its core, a call to safeguard this home we all share. Whether we’re activists, leaders, scientists, or citizens, we are united by the responsibility to protect what we hold in common. COP29 isn’t just another event on the climate agenda; it’s a reminder of our responsibility to care for each other and the world we call home. A small note just ahead of COP29 ! #COP29, #UNFCCC #ClimateAction #positiveimpact #CarbonMarket "Skeptical about ~ Summits, Conferences and Forums; they rarely lead to real and timebound change, regardless of formats !!" - Well this is not a statement, but a threaded opinion I found in the context of COP29; rather I would say it's a perspective shaped by countless observations, experiences, frustrations, hopes, and expectations from stakeholders worldwide regarding large platforms like COP. It’s a hard truth—disheartening yet undeniably real. I have been (happily & proudly) into Climate Change domain over 16 years now. I’ve seen the evolution of this field up close. While COP being a pivotal annual event for all of us, its essence has always been crucial for amplifying voices, respecting opinions, fostering open dialogues, showcasing transformative innovations, and building commitments. Yet, they also carry a greater duty—driving "real actions on time" beyond rhetoric. Addressing climate change demands collective, coordinated efforts from every sector; each action, no matter how small, contributes to the larger impact. As we know, the carbon market plays a crucial role here, driving measurable outcomes while enforcing accountability and responsibility toward set targets. Over the past five years, COP forums could have achieved significant progress through incremental actions rather than delaying for consensus on complex issues (such as Article 6 of the Paris Agreement). While significant time has been lost, but I still believe that our path forward remains intact, and accelerating the journey is within reach. Therefore, I certainly echo the call for tangible outcomes over lofty pledges, and YES I’m also holding onto hope for meaningful progress from the leaders and changemakers gathering at COP29. We (referring to all my fellow industry colleagues and dedicated professional like me) are already on the ground, equipped with the experience, projects, and strategies needed to drive tangible, measurable change. There are numerous plans from originators, changemakers, youths which are not just concepts; they’re actionable frameworks poised to create impactful shifts across the climate sector. Now, all we need are the Green Lights. So, let’s urge decision makers to commit to actionable strategies in Baku, not just words and distant promises !! SO, LOOKING FORWARD TO OUTCOME ENABLING REAL ACTIONS — not another tapestry of colorful pledges or vague roadmaps for the future. Thoughts?
