🚚 Calling all #MHDEV stakeholders! 🚛 Comments on the Federal Highway Administration's Request for Information (RFI) from stakeholders about electric vehicle (EV) charging technologies and infrastructure needs for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are due next Tuesday, November 12. The RFI seeks input in four areas to support MHDEVs: 🔋 1) unique EV charger and station needs; ⚡ 2) vehicle charging patterns; 🔌3) charging technology and standardization, and 👷♀️ 4) workforce, supply chain, and manufacturing to support charging of medium- and heavy-duty battery EVs in DOT vehicle classes four through eight, which include delivery vans, school buses, semi-tractor trucks, fire trucks, dump trucks, and tour buses. 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆! 🌟 Today, we're diving into Virginia’s exciting progress on vehicle electrification thanks to collaboration across counties, schools, and state departments. 🚗🔋 Fairfax County is working toward a 100% carbon-free fleet by 2035. With support from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Dominion Energy, they’ve already added electric buses and trucks. Fairfax County Public Schools are doing their part too, adding 73 electric buses to their fleet! In Alexandria, the city aims to have 25% of its fleet electric by the end of this fiscal year. Despite some delays, they’ve brought in 65 EVs and hybrid buses. 🚍 Even rural areas like Pennington Gap are joining the EV movement, installing charging stations with help from Virginia Clean Cities. This shows that electrification can succeed even in regions with lower vehicle usage. 🔌 On a statewide level, Virginia has allocated $39.9 million for battery-electric buses, and The Virginia Department of Transportation has already implemented EV options from GEM and Waev, driving the transition forward. Infrastructure matters. That’s why, of the 4 million vehicles purchased in the U.S. market in the first three months of 2024, only 269,000 were electric vehicles, or just 6.7% of the total. Why so low you ask? Here’s the breaking point for the EV panacea: by 2030, the U.S. will need 500,000 battery chargers to meet President Biden’s current EV targets (56% of car batteries electric by 2032, 13% hybrid). Obviously long-distance travel isn’t possible without a large network of chargers. For perspective, a May 23 Pew Research Center study found: “As of Feb. 27, 2024, there are more than 61,000 publicly accessible electric vehicle charging stations with Level 2 or DC Fast chargers in the U.S. That is a more than twofold increase from roughly 29,000 stations in 2020. For reference, there are an estimated 145,000 gasoline fueling stations in the country.” “As has been the case in the past, California has the most EV charging infrastructure of any state… Californians with an EV might also have a harder time than residents of many states when it comes to the actual experience of finding and using a charger. Despite having the most charging stations of any state, California’s 43,780 individual public charging ports must provide service for the more than 1.2 million electric vehicles registered to its residents. That works out to one public port for every 29 EVs, a ratio that ranks California 49th across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.” So even California, the center of EV popularity in the U.S., isn’t doing well in providing adequate chargers. Solid state batteries might help if they can be commercialised in a cost effective way - they are said to charge much faster and extend the range per charge. But that’s still a ways off. As the CBS anchor, Margaret Brennan, notes in this ‘Face the Nation’ interview here (https://lnkd.in/gz5MM4gK) with current Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former President Trump might actually have a valid point when he says, “We’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars subsidizing a car that nobody wants and nobody’s ever going to buy.” Just maybe he’s not wrong. Toyota certainly is hedging their bets, with big investments in solid state batteries, hybrids, FCEVs and more, as well as EVs.
