The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), in partnership with ASPIRE and ENRX, is testing a new technology that allows electric vehicles to charge while driving on the roadway. This technology uses wireless induction charging, where energy is transferred from ground coils to a receiver pad under the vehicle through electromagnetic induction. The system can detect when an electric vehicle is above it, ensuring safety for all drivers. This innovation aims to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and improve roadway infrastructure nationwide. The ENRX Charge 200 kW Electrified Roadway Technology is capable of powering all vehicle classes, including passenger cars, delivery vans, and heavy-duty trucks and buses. Successful tests have demonstrated high efficiency and power output, with potential for significant impact on future urban mobility. Intercity battery hybrid train starts live network testing in the North of England. The UK’s first intercity electric battery hybrid-powered train has begun testing on the national rail network in the North of England. The collaboration between TransPennine Express (TPE), Angel Trains and Hitachi Rail will see the hybrid battery technology put through its paces on routes between York to Manchester Airport and Leeds to Liverpool Lime Street in September and October. The battery has been successfully retrofitted into one of TransPennine Express’ five-carriage intercity Class 802 Nova 1 train, which will operate in both electric and diesel modes during the trial. The move to testing on the live network follows low-speed tests in purely electric mode on a test track at Hitachi Rail’s Newton Aycliffe manufacturing facility. The national rail network trail will enable a variety of important tests under real-world conditions, including the battery’s ability to improve performance on hills, regenerative charging via braking, fuel and emission savings, and operating in zero-emission battery mode in train stations. The battery, which generates a peak power of more than 700kw, is predicted to reduce emissions and fuel costs by around 30%. It will also demonstrate how battery technology can cut infrastructure costs by reducing the need for overhead wires in tunnel sections and over complex junctions... Innovations in the electric vehicle (#EV) world continue to amaze onlookers. Maximizing regenerative braking. The continual development of battery technology. Shared and connected transport systems. The growth of #EVs has also infused a new focus on charging infrastructure and the deployment of wireless charging technology on pavements. Also known as electrified roads or inductive charging, this approach to charging is compelling and complicated. A new quarter-mile stretch of 14th Street in #Detroit that is wired to charge EVs has captured the interest of EV aficionados. The project is being billed as the nation’s first wireless charging public roadway for EVs. As part of a pilot program, Michigan’s Department of Transportation has partnered with Electreon, an #Israeli-based company, on a 5-year agreement to develop a road inductive charging system. Using copper inductive charging coils in the road, EVs equipped with receivers can power up their batteries while driving, idling, or parking above the coils. When a vehicle with a receiver nears the charging segments, the coils beneath the road transfer electricity through a magnetic field, charging the vehicle’s battery. The coils only activate when a vehicle with a receiver passes over them. The roadway is safe for pedestrians, motorists, and animals. More Specifically: How Do Electrified Roads Work? As Dimitriadou and team describe in the journal Energies, wireless charging is achieved with the presence of galvanic isolation between the input side and the output circuitry. The most commonly used near-field wireless power transfer (#WPT) method is the inductive, i.e., energy transfer between loosely coupled coils, via magnetic induction. The primary circuit is powered with a time-varying current. High switching frequencies are employed so as to increase the transferred power level. Consequently, its operation is similar to that of the typical transformer, with the important difference being the large air gap separating the two coils (loosely coupled coils). The #AC power drawn from the utility #grid is rectified, and subsequently, with the aid of the inverter and the compensation network, a sinusoidal high-frequency current is supplied to the primary coil. #PFC control schemes can be applied to the input rectifier for the mitigation of current harmonics. In the Dynamic Wireless Charging (DWC) mode, such as being used in Detroit, the transmitter coil is embedded in the roadway, along with the required components that compose the primary circuit of a static inductive system. Τhe secondary circuit is located inside the vehicle. Recognising that the DWC constitutes a challenging concept to implement, Dimitriadou and team are cautiously optimistic about this charging method.

#EVCharging #ElectricTruck #ElectricShips #MegawattChargingStandard #MCS #MelissaWilliams #HilmarVanDenDool #ShellMarine "Shell Marine just opened a novel new megawatt charging station designed to service both land-based and ocean-going battery-electric vehicles. Dubbed “Megawatt Charging System” by Shell Marine, the DCFC station is fitted with two unique boom arms, one to service trucks and one to service boats. Shell hopes the design will help reduce the costs associated with adding chargers for vessel operators by promoting a single common charging system standard for trucks and material handlers onto seagoing vessels, it will allow the many vehicle classes commonly found at busy seaside ports to use the same infrastructure without duplicating infrastructure investment. “We believe this solution will be helpful for shipping companies that control and operate logistics businesses across the supply chain,” explains Shell Marine President Melissa Williams. “(They) often have facilities that serve both water side and land side.” “There are not that many electric trucks and vessels yet, so with this we’re investing ahead of the market that is growing quickly,” says Hilmar van den Dool, General Manager eMobility at Shell. “It is in line with our ambition to provide more and cleaner energy solutions.” The sea/land DCFC station was installed at the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA), Shell’s electric innovation center in the Netherlands. The site also houses a wide array of renewable infrastructure demonstrators, like battery-powered EV chargers and a hydrogen electrolyzer. Shell hopes to roll out additional examples of its new sea/land charging solution at other sites. ..."
In case you missed it, the very first Truck and Marine #MCS charging station was unveiled yesterday in Amsterdam. MCS is great for charging large-format batteries for commercial vehicles that roll, dig, float, and fly.
