The most common response when I ask individuals if they could cycle to work is “I would but…” 🚙 I’m scared of the cars 👧 I have to pick up my children from daycare or school 🥵 I don’t like being sweaty for work 🚴 I can’t ride a bike or I don’t have a bike 🤷♀️ It’s easier to drive I can honestly say I have felt all of these barriers apart from picking up children but completely understand how this can be logistically difficult. When we moved to Nelson I really wanted to be central so cycling was my only transport for getting to and from work. Even walking when I have a good podcast I’d like to listen to or its a great time to call a friend or family member. I guess what I’m trying to say is consider your options if you can’t cycle what can you do? Can you walk or run? What about the bus or train? Start with one day a week and build up from there. At Bluemoth we have been competitively taking part in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge with a team of two. David and I have been riding absolutely everywhere, no excuses. All of the riding has paid off as we are sitting 1st in Nelson & Tasman (1-6 Staff) 2nd for “Consultancy” in New Zealand and 19th overall (1-6 Staff). The cycle challenge brings people together and gets more people out riding. Who doesn’t love a bit of competition? Chia Sisters are keeping us on our toes as they’re just a few points behind us. Between David and I we have cycled 773km from the 1st February 24 to date. It’s not too late to sign up, you can cycle as an individual or get your organisation onboard. Road transport is New Zealand’s second largest greenhouse gas emitter due to traffic growth and it’s one of the easiest changes we can make in our everyday lives to reduce our impact on the environment. 📸 Nelson has awesome bike parking options. Most people view the competition as a battle to be won at all costs. But my experience in the bike share industry, particularly from 2012 to 2019, was very much the opposite. There was a time when the term “bike share” was unfamiliar to most. Now, mention "bike share," and everyone knows what it is. This transformation was the result of an entire industry working together to innovate and grow. Pitching to cities often meant being in the same rooms with competitors, all vying for the same contract. Through these travels and meetings around the world, I befriended many of our competitors. Some folks that immediately come to mind include Lee Jones from Bcycle, Lauren Isaac from her time at Motivate, Sebastian Schlebusch from his time at NextBike, and Kyle Rowe from his time at Spin (see comments for the full list!). Together, we tackled a shared problem from slightly different angles, benefiting cities, communities, and the environment in the process. Competition, in this light, wasn't a hindrance, but a catalyst for collective progress. The bike share boom brought a wave of competitors, each pushing the industry forward, solidifying the category, and amplifying our impact. This competition spurred innovation, forced us to rethink our business models, and approach problems creatively. This is a testament to how competition can be a force for good, fostering better outcomes for everyone involved. It made me a better operator and, more importantly, showed me the value of viewing competitors as collaborators in a shared mission. I'm curious to hear from others. Is this sense of camaraderie in the face of competition unique to the bike share industry, or have you experienced something similar in your field? Micro-mobility provides people with myriad options to getting around. They can also be a great way for multi-modal trips. It is really important that public policies and programs are developed through consultation with diverse communities, particularly those that are most impacted by them. In this case, until the Toronto Accessibility Advisory Committee provides its support to an e-scooter pilot, the city should concentrate on its expansion of the wildly successful Bike Share Toronto program. Biking (including e-bikes) remains the best tool to move people away from single occupancy car use for distances under 5 or 7 km. It is always a great pleasure to see a bike share scheme flourish and evolve with time 🚲💙. The latest example is wupsiRad - our public bike share scheme for the city of Leverkusen. Having been up and running for five years now, the wupsiRad success calls for celebration 🎊. In the last half decade, the bikes were used more than 280,000 times by roughly 20,000 people! Moreover, the schemes' usage gradually expanded over time. While the bikes were only used 48,000 times in the first year, they were used almost twice as much in 2023. These numbers more than prove the relevance of a public bike share scheme for Leverkusen, so it was about time to expand and diversify the fleet. As of last week, the whole fleet has not only been renewed, but also more than doubled in size. Now, 617 new pedal bikes and 88 e-bikes with swappable batteries have been added to wupsiRad, offering state of the art and sustainable means of transport to inhabitants and visitors of Leverkusen.
