Breaking the Silence Through Art ️ Sometimes, the hardest part is starting the conversation. This week, I had the privilege of leading an art therapy session themed "Breaking the Silence." It was a powerful experience to witness participants using art materials to express what words couldn't. I demonstrated with one of my works made from trash. The discarded objects became symbols, textures spoke volumes, and colors conveyed emotions. Art therapy provides a safe space for self-discovery and connection. It reminds us that we're not alone in our struggles, and that even the broken pieces can be transformed into something beautiful. ✨ Feeling unheard? Art therapy can help. It's not only about numbers—it's also about telling a compelling story of transformation, and placing donors in the roles of superheroes. ⭐ Using Impact Reporting to Ignite Engagement – The Secret Sauce The “secret sauce” so to speak, lies in weaving great stories and impact into your narrative. Think "generosity vs. philanthropy," by emphasizing the emotional journey your donors embark on with each contribution. By focusing on extreme gratitude, you create a lasting connection, turning one-time donors into lifelong advocates. ⭐ Getting Started with Impact Reporting – DRG Style Now, where to begin? We're here to guide you through the process: 1. Define Your Impact Goals: Before you start reporting, clearly define what sort of reporting you will be doing. Are you planning to create reports for individual donors or more broad-based reporting to be delivered to multiple donors at once? Ideally, your organization should be doing a combination of both of these. 2. Determine the types of reports. Above, we mention individual and broad-based reports, but now you need to determine what types you will offer. Digital, printed, or both? What is meaningful to the donor? Do they like lots of financial data or do they prefer a story? Pay attention to the needs and wants of your donors, and your projects will be significantly more meaningful and productive. 3. Choose Your Metrics Wisely: Select metrics that align with your impact goals. Whether it's lives touched, communities transformed, or ecosystems restored – always pick metrics that tell a compelling story. 4. Craft a Compelling Narrative: Infuse your content with signature charm. You can often use humor to make your impact stories memorable. Whether it's a quirky video or a witty infographic, be sure to lean in your organization’s unique characteristics wherever you can. 5. Engage Your Audience: Leverage social media, newsletters, and events to engage your audience actively. Encourage them to share their thoughts, experiences, and ideas. I often reflect on how, collectively, we would have made it through the pandemic without art. Yet we know that most artists - the people who bring into life all manner of magical things that would otherwise remain in the imagination - are chronically under resourced and extracted from in this economy. Precarious work, the expectation of unpaid labour, limited worker rights, onerous contract terms are all common features of the contemporary artist's existence. How are we trying to build economic systems that enable artists to thrive? This is why I was so very inspired to meet Maura Cuffie on the Just Economy Institute fellowship last year. Maura has been working on a pilot guaranteed income program for artists with Creatives Rebuild New York for the past three years and has written a compelling piece about her experience during the pilot and the role of philanthropy in supporting long-term policy change. She says "guaranteed income work should be in solidarity with other movements for economic justice, for example, movements for reparations and abolition. It should also be aligned with artists seeking systemic changes to create a solidarity economy." Thinking Fast & Slow As some of you know, I host a weekly podcast called Strategies for Empowering Entrepreneurial Dreams SEED on the platform for ANE Global Global, a social enterprise that facilitates professionalism and economic viability among black owned and operated businesses. www.aneglobal.org. Today, for the first time, I would like to give an overview of what to expect in the next episode soon to be released on Saturday, 20th April. You may have heard of the African/Chinese proverb that says, "If you want to go fast, walk alone, but if you want to go far, walk with others." I have had cause to reflect on this due to the leadership roles I have played recently and have decided on a different approach, which is not to follow either positions absolutely but adopt a hybrid of the two. Doing this helps me to be ninble and to decide for each case when it's best to walk fast or slow. As a an entrepreneur and founder of several initiatives in the marketplace, I am constantly processing ideas of how to navigate several scenarios in ministry, community development and consulting (where simultaneously I am required to fill the roles of business development, strategy and/or operations) and as such need to think and act swiftly to gain or enhance our competitive advantage. Consequently, speed of execution is critical i.e. without suffering a loss in quality of output. Therefore, I find myself deciding whether to wear my operator hat and leverage my proven experience as an international consultant or to take on the position of a coach or leader holding back and letting others catch up, make their mistakes, but with the possibility of losing out on an identified opportunity. This mindset has largely been instrumental to how and why some of the organizations I am privileged to lead have remained relevant and are meeting the needs of the moment. I encourage every founder or highly driven business, community or faith leader not to take a backseat and let things slide especially when you are too trusting of those who may not share your passion or values..Rather, find ways to sustain the momentum by causing a positive change that will keep everyone moving ahead. Happy Juneteenth✊🏼 The fight for liberation is never an easy one, and in many ways there is still a lot of work to be done. Throughout history, black contributions to infrastructure and technology are often overlooked or minimized. I admit it, I have a very big soft spot for NSBE. I believe my African ancestors would be proud of the legacy of NSBE across the globe as one of the largest student governed organizations. For 50 years, NSBE has been empowering our best and brightest, is a safe community, nurtures talent, and opens the door to incredible opportunities professionally. Although my career has developed beyond the scope of engineering, as an entrepreneur, my experience as a NSBE campus leader is the blueprint for how my company prioritizes and builds with underserved and marginalized communities and creators today. Technology has the power to both liberate and enslave the mind.
