What a month it has been for 2024 Black History Month! Being an advocate for positive change, I attended a number of events each of which amplify the impact of Black contributions in business, technology, and finance, reinforcing the importance of creating pathways for continued growth and equity. Here are some of the highlights: BTF® 2024 showcased the achievements and challenges of Black professionals in tech. Key discussions revolved around building inclusive workspaces, increasing Black representation in tech leadership, and leveraging emerging technologies for community-driven change. It was a great place to connect with like-minded individuals and learn about the innovative tech world. The529 after work social underpinned the importance of Community and Collaboration: These monthly events host many leaders within the Black community and have a consistent theme of organic and natural networking. I was invited by the Canary Wharf Group to a pannel talk hosted by black leaders across industries who empower the next generation, focusing on mentorship and skill development to prepare Black leaders for future roles whether in business, tech, or entrepreneurship. Deutsche Bank Launch and Networking event with Lord Sugar’s former Apprentice winner Tim Campbell paving the way and Empowering Black Entrepreneurship. My key takeaway being in order to reclaim narratives, we need to educate upwards. HSBC UK Embrace opening event was a great example of ongoing Advocacy for Equity and Inclusion with continuous efforts toward racial equity and inclusion in various sectors, highlighting that progress requires sustained advocacy, policy change, and community commitment. There was a strong emphasis on allyship, both within and outside the Black community, as crucial to achieving sustained progress - and there was jollof rice! UK Black Business Show highlighted the growth of Black-owned businesses, focusing on the power of community support, mentorship, and strategic investment to overcome systemic barriers. It also emphasized the importance of creating ecosystems where Black entrepreneurs can thrive, from networking opportunities to funding access. Whether your next step is entrepreneurship or a role in the world of banking law or Tech this event had you covered.

I had the great pleasure of celebrating Black History Month with Kiva US Capital Access Managers (CAMs) today as a speaker on Breaking Barriers: Leveraging AI to Empower Black Women Entrepreneurs. ⚖️ We unpacked the legal and financial landscapes for Black women entrepreneurs today, particularly how ongoing litigation has caused a 68% drop in the Fearless Fund's staffing (from 19 to 6 employees) and how all but two of the partners that backed their $3.7MM in grant issuances have backed out. These headwinds show a glimpse into what all race-based programs are fighting against. 💸 We unpacked statistics on Black women being the most founded and least funded group of entrepreneurs, representing 42% of all net new U.S. businesses created by women each day (despite being only 14% of the population) - yet receiving less than 0.1% of VC Funding. I reminded CAMs that these statistics reveal an ill-equipped system, not an ill-equipped group of entrepreneurs. ⭐ Black women entrepreneurs are extremely experienced individuals with deep community resources. 81% of Black women entrepreneurs have at least a college degree, 73% are mothers, 77% worked for more than 10 years before exiting the workforce, 85% chose entrepreneurship to be aligned with their passions, 43% are spouses, and so much more. It is so important that we engineer financial solutions that do not regurgitate the rules of a sub-standard system. Rather, we should innovate in ways that mirror the practical brilliance of long-standing values, proclivities, and cultural traditions. We had a lot of rich discussion today and my heart is full!

Honoring Juneteenth and Celebrating Inspirational Founders As we recently commemorated Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom and resilience, I am reminded of the incredible contributions of Black entrepreneurs who continue to shape industries and inspire future generations. One such inspiring founder is Danessa Myricks, a trailblazer in the beauty industry who has built a thriving cosmetics brand known for its inclusivity and innovation. During Black History Month, I was deeply honored when Danessa Myricks gave a shoutout to my brand, Good Rapport. Her acknowledgment means the world to me and reinforces the importance of community and mutual support among Black founders. Danessa’s journey and success serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with passion, dedication, and resilience. However, it's essential to recognize the unique challenges Black women entrepreneurs face. From securing funding to navigating biases, the road to success is often steeper. The recent developments with the Fearless Fund highlight these challenges starkly. The Fearless Fund, dedicated to investing in women of color-led businesses, is currently facing legal battles that threaten its mission. This underscores the systemic barriers that Black women continue to encounter in the business world. As we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on our shared history, it is crucial to continue supporting and amplifying the work of Black entrepreneurs. Their contributions not only drive economic progress but also enrich our cultural and social landscapes. Supporting Black founders is more than just a gesture; it’s a commitment to fostering diversity, innovation, and equity in every industry. The importance of inclusivity in economic growth and development. When a significant portion of the population is excluded from participating in the economy, it hinders the overall growth and prosperity of the nation. Inclusive economic growth, on the other hand, creates opportunities for all citizens to contribute and benefit, leading to: 1. Increased economic activity. 2. Improved standards of living. 3. Reduced income inequality. 4. Enhanced social cohesion. 5. Greater political stability. An economy that excludes parts of its population cannot integrate its citizens in a meaningful way, leading to social, economic, and political challenges. Inclusive growth is essential for building a prosperous and harmonious society. The younger generation is poised to drive Black enterprise creation, and their ability to build networks from scratch will be a significant factor in their success. By leveraging their skills, creativity, and determination, they can: 1. Create innovative businesses that address emerging needs. 2. Disrupt industries with fresh perspectives. 3. Build networks that span industries and geographies. 4. Access resources and mentorship through digital platforms. 5. Inspire and support each other through community-building initiatives. This generation has the potential to rewrite the rules of success and create a more inclusive and equitable economic landscape. It is indeed an exciting time, and the future of Black enterprise creation looks bright!
