Additionally, job seekers must build 🤝relationships 🤝and create alliances to advance in “the game”, often relying on strategic communication. To my folks who both work in EdTech and have kids in school: Do poor implementations of EdTech tools at your kids’ schools drive you bonkers or is it just me??? 😤😤 Excuse me - this event will be delayed at least an hour because the school is doing scans on EVERY PERSON for the event and they decided to open scanning 10 minutes prior. (The system takes ~1 min to scan and print an id.) Really need some better documentation for these schools… #edtech #mom #schools #implementation

Networking. More than a chat. I always underrated the power of networking until... I landed my first instructional design client 2 years ago We had just one mutual connection: a star instructional designer I was afraid to send this star a connection request But he accepted whatsoever The client searched for his ideal instructional designer. Found my profile matched his institution's needs. Bang --> First qualified lead generated. On LinkedIn, ➡️ Networking equates to success. ➡️ It's about valuable connections. ➡️ Beyond sharing business cards. Do you want strong networks here?   Your secret weapon. ➡️ Avoid small talk. ➡️ Seek common ground. ➡️ Build deep, meaningful relationships. Remember, authenticity wins, always. P.S. 👩🏽‍🏫 My teacher portfolio was the key to landing my first role outside of the classroom in #EdTech. No, not my Instructional Design Portfolio… but my teaching portfolio. Portfolios aren’t just for Instructional Designers. K-12 #EdTech companies are looking for #teachers who know the school landscape and possess knowledge and experience regarding what students and teachers need. When interviewing in the K-12 EdTech space, knowing my accomplishments as a teacher, and reflecting deeply on my impact, put me in a position to sell myself as a Learning Designer in K-12. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t build an ID portfolio. I am saying that if you are looking to enter the K-12 education space in a different capacity (EdTech, Publishing, Curriculum Development), take the time to analyze and know your classroom impact. Here are some things that my teaching portfolio highlighted: 🍎 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: In K-12 #EdTech and curriculum development the mission is so important. Similar to the work you do in the classroom the work is mission-driven. Have a clear picture of your mission, what you've accomplished, and what you aim to accomplish in your next role. 🌀 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥-𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 Once you take a moment to analyze the work you’ve done, you begin to see all of the new ideas and systems that influenced learning outcomes and employee performance - keep those in mind. 💼 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭-𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Have you created professional development for your school, district, or team? I highlighted my impact at the district level through PBIS training for teachers. I highlighted this experience, to show that I had the skills to train and design training for learners outside of my students. 💻 𝐄𝐝𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 What EdTech tools or strategies did your school use to support students? Consider and reflect on what you used to support students and the impact it made on students and their learning needs. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘰𝘯𝘦… 📊 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬 I created nice charts and graphs with data summaries to articulate my impact and the work toward the mission. My teaching methods and ability to design learning that impacted student growth were clear. I created this portfolio on the way 𝐨𝐮𝐭 of the classroom years ago… WHY? Because I knew it would help to articulate the value I could bring within the EdTech and/or curriculum development space. I say all this to say… If you’re an #educator looking to #transition from the classroom into an education-adjacent role, think deeply about your impact as an educator and find creative ways to articulate your value. 🪄 You are so much more than “just a teacher”, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Are your courses really engaging with students or just "pretending"? Are your faculty interacting with students or just posting content and disappearing? True online learning isn't independent study. We shouldn't leave students on their own with a "holler if you need me approach". Smart course design will build in engagement, interaction, and automatic excitement. Engaged students persist in a program and don't transfer. Keep that existing customer. Might want to take a look at your courses and faculty expectations. It's back to school and almost time for fourth quarter for many of you. I've decided to do something I've never done before: 🚨 For the next month, I will be running a special on all instructional design projects! The economy has hit HR and Learning & Development departments hard across the country and that hasn't been the exception for my business either. I have struggled to keep my business afloat and to keep me and my kids going on savings and small projects here and there. It is scary being a single mom and a business owner. I love this business. 3 networking mistakes I made pivoting to instructional design (and what I wish I would have done instead) 1. Forgetting to reach out to existing connections Even if someone isn’t an instructional designer They might know someone who is Or even work with one ↳Be sure to leverage your existing network - Classmates and professors - Friends and family - Coworkers 2. Randomly connecting with any “instructional designer” While it was helpful to grow my network, a more effective approach would have been ↳ Connecting with: - People using skills I wanted to learn - Local professionals in my area - Target company employees - Alumni working in ID roles 3. Not following up with new connections I would get really excited seeing “Accepted your connection request” and would stop my outreach there. ↳ Instead I wish I would have: - Taken time to send more notes - Followed up with a thank you - Started a conversation - Asked questions Taking the time to fix these mistakes would have helped me to - Make more connections sooner - Build meaningful relationships faster - Focus on quality over quantity “connections” What lessons have you learned as you’ve networked more? P.S. There’s nothing wrong with making “mistakes” networking! But these practices have helped me build better relationships than when I first started networking 2 years ago!

As an educator, you are probably pretty creative. You often think outside of the box when designing your lessons.
