I have read over 3,000+ #TransitioningTeacher and #EdTech #Resumes.... ...and I want to offer some pointers to anyone who is #ResumeWriting right now to get out of teaching during this recession: ✅ You ARE the ROLE your SKILLS are: I have never seen so many talented individuals be afraid of accidentally lying on a resume; when in reality they do the tasks every day! "I have never actually taught adults, only 500+ kids a year, can I say I can train people?" - YES YOU CAN! Do you think 30 screaming kids with helicopter parents are EASIER than training adults?! Stop having #impostersyndrome and shooting yourself in the foot every chance you get! If you have Professional Development and skills in roles; then BE PROUD TO SHOW AND SAY IT. As someone who has been in #InstructionalDesigner for years, teaching is harder. Stop getting in your own way and be proud to post your experience! ✅ Quantify and use numbers MORE: I am not interested in someone saying something that is not grounded in numbers. I have read over 1,500+ #TransitioningTeacher and #EdTech #Resumes.... ✅ Remember; you are NO LONGER a teacher on your resume. You are not a TEACHER who wants to transition; YOU. ARE. WHAT. YOUR. SKILLS. ARE. I don’t know what it is about my teachers; I love y’all - but HAVE CONFIDENCE! If your skill set, program knowledge, and job title is what YOU CAN DO; you can put that as your desired career title. You’re no longer a ‘teacher trying to be…’ in your opening summary; YOU ARE WHAT YOU APPLY FOR’. Own it. Let it rip. Stop thinking a recruiter is going to google your name or something; you ARE THE SKILLS YOU HAVE. (I am not saying lie, I am saying you have to strategically present yourself as an expert - which you are - and avoid #impostersyndrome) ✅ #softskills go on cover letter. #hardskills go on resume. Use your soft skills to show EMOTIONAL CONNECTION to the company you apply for. I’m not saying you re write it for all jobs; but make some statements like ‘your company seems to standout because you value enriching your employees and I’m a life long learner myself’ - instead of putting ‘lifelong learner’ as a skill. Everyone is a life king learner - what everyone is not is someone with your hard skills. Articulate360, Adobe, Canvas, LMS, or ACTUAL things you can do go on a resume and they need to be the focus. ✅ The average #recruiter will spend 6 seconds to decide ‘Am I going to read more’ and your 3 pages is not helping that. You’re a teacher right; do you like sitting through 3 hour lectures and long meetings? Nooooooo you don’t. Neither do recruiters lol. Embrace less is more. GIVE. ME. WHAT. IS. THE. BEST. OF. YOU. 13-15 solid bullet points for your experience, and then you can expand on this in an interview. I want to know why you’re the best and what problems you’ll solve; 35 bullet points of every little task you does won’t do that at face value - but 12 SOLID problems you fixed with some data to support it is way more efficient. I hope this helps front when view of someone who seen a lot of these and is in the field.
