Up until now, most skills-based learning attempts by larger organisations have been well-intentioned but ill-fated. There are many reasons for this, but this is perhaps the most common: The arduous process of skills mapping. It could take years - literally - to map all the skills for a large multinational organisation, and once that’s been completed, who’s to say those roles mapped at the beginning would still be relevant? Think about all the upfront work that had to be done manually: - Identifying and listing job roles and descriptions - Assessing learner proficiencies in various areas of their role - Mapping ALL of that into a system… It’s no wonder that, by the time most HR teams or consultants were through building the ontologies and assessments, they were out of date. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds and dollars - millions even - down the drain… not to mention the amount of time and effort wasted. That’s all changed now, thanks to the team here at 360Learning. Some of you might remember the video below from a few months back. It’s me demo’ing SkillsGPT. Before, it was only available for ChatGPT pro subscribers. But not anymore. Now it’s 100% free. So, if you’d like to begin skills mapping roles in your org today in MINUTES instead of months (or years), then jump in and try it out. I’ll drop the link to the SkillsGPT demo and my original post in the comments. P.S. If skills-based learning is of interest to you, please join me tomorrow for my open office hours on the topic. Based on registration numbers, it’s shaping up to be a lively conversation. I’ll put the registration link for that in the comments as well.
David James This couldn't have come at a better time! I'm currently in the process of mapping the skills for a client (a large org. with 1000+ employees), and because of the very challenges you've outlined, we're taking an MVP based approach to the whole process. Expand on the sub-skills, behaviors and rubric for one skill bucket, create learning and support materials around this, and take all learning back to the table to refine and improve. Can't wait to learn more about SkillsGPT. Not sure if I can make it for the office hours though. Would there be a recording?
This is my life right now David and along with James Griffin were aiming to go from nothing to a version 1 for the whole business in the space of months!
Thanks for addressing this topic David James. I have been victim of the arduous process of skills mapping. This sounds like a dream come true for all aspirational L&D teams who wants to mature and be transformative. I cant wait to hear more from you on this topic. Looking forward for the todays open office hours session.
I've happened across this post at a great time as I'm just starting to look at this now in our business. Looking forward to trying this out and to joining the discussion this afternoon 😀
The GPT works really well, David. Congrats to the team. I particularly like the structure you’ve used to guide the prompting process and the inbuilt checks and confirmation points.
360Learning I've registered for this Office Hours event but not received an email with the link, please could you help? 🙂
Tushna Siganporia - You must check this out! So much to relate & reflect on the work we have done regarding skill-mapping activities.
There is one step that comes before skills mapping, where many organizations struggle: get parts of the HR org on board. Particularly Rewards, with the whole discussion around job architecture and how it is the foundation for all (current) HR processes from banding, salary planning, promotions, etc.. then you dont even have Agreement within your own function, even before you get out to the exec board and key stakeholders. Great to see new tools emerging to make the actual mapping easier and faster.
