Remember your 'why'. We all have personal reasons for why we pursued a career in sales. I did a full 180 and left a mechanical engineering career path to pursue sales solely for my 'why'. Maybe your why is to set up your future family for a comfortable life, maybe you want to retire your parents, maybe you want to buy your own time back and retire earlier than others. These are my 'whys'. My childhood friend once said to me: "No one can truly reject me if I don't reject myself" - and that has stuck with me... especially in my sales career. No prospect or customer could ever take my 'why' away from me. So I keep showing up (and you should, too).

You're trying to connect with an analytical IT buyer. How can you establish a strong rapport?
Analytical people require analytical approaches. Do your research! Familiarize yourself with the buyer and their organization in depth. Are they hiring? Is their stock bullish or bearish? Read their 10-K filing in detail. Understand what products are in their current tech stack and how yours would enrich or replace existing licenses. Put yourself in their shoes. Dig into the account history internally and previous discovery or calls by your organization. You should know their challenges and approach them as a consultant focused on solving their specific issues. IT is a saturated space with many new players; to stand out above the noise, utilize information and research to differentiate yourself from the masses and build strong rapport.

The key to successful sales outreach lies not in pushing a product or demo, but in forging genuine relationships. This is where social media, particularly LinkedIn, plays a crucial role in my approach. I focus on understanding who my prospect is (professionally & personally), engaging with their content, and celebrating their success. I extend their reach by amplifying their voices. This builds trust- an essential foundation in sales. Rather than pitching, I start conversations with the intent to genuinely connect & learn from them; many of whom have decades more experience than I do in my industry. It's this relationship-first approach that keeps me and my product at the forefront of prospects' minds, long before they're ready to buy.
