The cannabis companies that ‘WIN’ in 2025 and beyond will have these five things in common: 1) They understand the scale that they are trying to achieve and their entire operation is appropriately focused based on that scale. -Local companies need to market and connect locally (in an extremely authentic way) while focusing on profitable, sustainable revenue streams that are mostly consumer driven. -Statewide companies need to do the hard math and modeling to understand what realistic growth means for them. Set specific growth targets based on achieveable modeling. Too many statewide brands operate, market and spend like a national brand, and it will cost them in the end. -National brands must focus on lean profitability and maintain a highly targeted approach to their spending, despite a world that may seem like it has limitless customers. 2) They don’t try to do it all. Developing mastery and economies of scale in specific sectors, while building strong partnerships in the rest of the market, is the model for success in the years to come. The great companies from 2025-Federal Legalization will seek out expansion via truly strategic partnerships (and careful aquisitions) while the mediocre companies attempt to do it all themselves. The largest, best capitalized MSOs will be buying up statewide and regional businesse with lean, focused, positive-cashflow operations, which solve specific problems in their infrastructure. 3) They are building a business that is designed for the New World of Cannabis, and the Era of Commercialization. -We aren’t trappers anymore. -Hitting licks can only take you so far. -Weed is a CPG product. -THCA is sold openly online and in gas stations. -D9 Bevs and Gummies are sold in some of the deepest red states. -Weed by mail is probably here to stay. -Mushrooms are legal in various cities and states. -Consumer trust in a brand is the most valuable asset in the industry. No matter their scale, the companies that win in the next five years will integrate themselves into the new ways consumers interact with and purchase cannabis…. (Online, DTC, Low-Dose, Mixed Nootropic, Bev, Smoke Shop/Gas Station, Mass Market, Seshes, N.A. bars/lounges, add-on dispensary licenses) 4) They build continuous feedback loops with their customers. The great brands and companies that succeed into the 2030’s will have a deep, data-based understanding of their consumers at all levels. Brands must understand the buying criteria of the stores that carry them as well as the buying criteria of the consumers that drive sell-through. The very best will encourage a rewarding consumer engagement loop that directly influences operational decision making. 5) They just don’t quit. (In fact, they continue to innovate, pivot, and understand that at the end of the day, their business is change). A lot of cannabis operators will quit in the next five years. In all business, but especially in cannabis, sometimes it’s just about being there tomorrow.

OK...I don't think any real CPG company would enter a new product category with 4 different brands. But Tilray is not a real CPG company, which is why they are entering the hemp-derived Delta-9 THC beverage category, with 4 different brands. I spent 25 years in CPG, and ran a number of beverage-related brands like Maxwell House Coffee and Del Monte Fruit Drinks and Bacardi and Grey Goose Spirits and bev-alc RTD's and I cannot recall ever trying to launch 4 brands at the same time, especially into a still nascent and changing product category. It just seems business irresponsible - it might make for good investor fodder, but it's not smart marketing strategy.

It was great to join Yahoo Finance’s today to discuss the impact that rescheduling will have on the cannabis industry and #Curaleaf. To watch the interview, click here: https://lnkd.in/dtensTxx To be clear, yesterday proved to be a monumental moment in cannabis history and our industry’s future. The DEA has moved to reschedule cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III. This is a crucial step in undoing the harms caused by the failed and discriminatory War on Drugs, reducing the stigma of the plant and in recognizing cannabis as the legitimate business and medical alternative that we all know it is.  This decision will positively impact the entire landscape of the cannabis industry. For Curaleaf, it will lead to relief from the burdensome 280e tax provision, and for our patients and customers, greater access and acceptance to the products of their choice.  There is still a significant process ahead, including a 60-day public comment period that will likely begin in May, followed by a review by a Justice department administrative law judge and the White House Office of Management and Budget. Once complete, the DEA will present all comments to the administrative judge and, not including potential lawsuits by dissenting organizations, the new schedule 3 designation could come into effect as early as October-November of this year, or sometime in the first half of 2025. A huge shout out to our amazing team members, our entire organization and everyone in the cannabis community who worked tirelessly to fight for this change.

Here are five ways to improve your marketing process for a CPG product (like cannabis) without spending more money: 1) Actually develop a marketing process. Do you have an SOP for onboarding a new store? For launching a new product or strain? You probably should…. 2) Establish and maintain a feedback loop. Are you talking to retailers after product is delivered to hear what’s working, what isn’t, and why? Why not!? 3) Educate retailer staff with an info sheet inside cases of product. (Ok, this costs $.02 per…. But you get the point.) How are you ensuring retail staff knows the finer points about your product? 4) Systematically evangelize your product thoughtfully on social media. 1000 non-follower consumers seeing your post is a HUGE win. 1 non-follower b2b contact seeing your post is a HUGE win. While there is a small time investment here, if you are authentically working in your business everyday, your content (and your excitement about your product) should come out organically. Not harvesting the marketing benefit from that energy is a huge mistake. 5) Regularly audit and improve merchandising and placement in retail locations. Do you even know how your product is displayed in stores? Do you know how it’s listed on in-store menus? Do you think it could be displayed better/larger/brighter/closer to the register/etc? 6) Improve existing label and packaging messaging. You don’t need to spend more on your packaging to make it better. More importantly, (and this is its own separate post) packaging is often the START of a consumers marketing journey. It should be working for you after the sale, to get the next one. It’s how customers learn about your brand, its history, its value prop, or its how they connect to you online in order to do so. Consumers often buy for the first time on a whim. They buy again and again for a reason. Is your packaging illustrating that reason? Have you A/B tested different verbiage / imagery / layouts with your team or trusted friends? Have you run packaging designs by retail partners you are close with to get a sense on what they think will work? Each of these things is free. And yes, becuase I know some of you trolls out there will be rearing to bring it up: these things do take time, and yes, arguably, time is money. But nothing listed above is a budget item. None of it would break your bank. They would take effort, brainpower, and close cooperation. But more than anything, good marketing is a practice of consistent monitoring and iteration. The world is changing and so are consumers. Competitors are fighting for your marketshare. Each of the things I listed above requires ongoing maintenance. Ongoing care. Ongoing innovation. The SOPs never stop improving. The feedback loop never stops looping. The retailers will always need educating. The online world will always provide new eyes. The product can always be displayed better. Packaging messaging can always be more impactful. That’s the hard part.

Cannabis startups are DEF a rollercoaster - 2 wks ago I was reeling from several gut punches... but today, things are looking bright: ✅ LOTS of new products in the pipeline that I'm SO pumped about... our Live Resin Vapes drop in NY before 710 and they're 🔥 🔥 🔥 . A bunch more new stuff I can't reveal them yet too… ✅ in NY, LIVE NUGS are in almost completely sold out - with most places re-ordering after < 2 wks selling a $100+ SKU! We’re getting a ton of inbound interest - shows that innovative products that deliver real value sell. Still early, but we should 2-3X our best month ever... NY as a market feels like it’s FINALLY getting its footing (hope I’m not jinxing us here). ✅ in CA, we've signed 4 MONSTER accounts since HoF and our new SKUs (esp Live Rosin Pre-Rolls and Live Rosin Vapes) are FLYING... it's painful for our cash flow to be scaling to meet demand, but feeling very positive about the turnaround in the most challenging state. About to sign up for the next big show in Sept… ❓thinking about expansion - though it's still early (wanna make sure our foundation & processes are solid in CA / NY)... but what potential partners should we be talking to in NJ for cultivation / processing / sales & distro? “Growing a CPG company, especially in the food and beverage space, ‘is astronomically harder today,’. ” Paul Voge you said it, man. So many truth bombs dropped in this article about the challenges and difficulties growing and scaling a CPG brand in today’s world. The cruel reality is that it takes a whole lot of money or a whole lot of time (and most times both) along with a fair amount of luck to have a chance at making it. If you dont have a ton of money then you better have a ton of time, some good fortune, and a product that can withstand many changes of the seasons (and "trends"). For most emerging brands today its all about survival and just finding a way.  There are lots of traps out there– lots of shiny objects– lots of vanity metrics hoping to be noticed and cared about–but at the end of the day sometimes its just about living to see another one. Here’s to all you day-to-dayers and week-to-weekers out there that are all just finding a way. Keep finding it.

Michigan cannabis sales are up “only” 2.2% YoY. Prices have dropped 24.2% YoY. Lots of people are sounding the alarm, but what does this really mean? WE SOLD 35% MORE UNITS YoY! Consumers still spent the same amount on weed, they just bought (a lot) more of it. This is the same trend we’ve been seeing for years. Your margins are shrinking on a per unit basis. To maintain profitability, you’ll have to sell more units. Consumers are happy to oblige. For a cultivator with limited amount of capacity, who can’t just conjure up more units without a massive infrastructure spend, this is an issue, but there are creative ways to continue to scale without investing in more lights. No, we aren’t seeing massive top line growth, but isn’t that a good thing? At this point, wouldn’t most Michigan operators choose stability over rapid growth at the expense of per unit profit? Don’t we generally see lower prices for the consumer as a good thing? (Yes, I know every other good has gotten more expensive while cannabis hasn’t- but that’s what happens in a brand new commodity market with an agricultural supply chain that takes years to develop.) This data set was published on the same day as news that Fluresh is closing its massive cultivation facility in Adrian, Michigan- and while the closure of a facility and the loss of jobs is nothing to be celebrated - the data and the news (on top of the rapid price compression we’ve seen recently) seem to mark a turning point in the industry. Several truths will become highly evident: Strong brands and lean operators will win out- because customers have more financial freedom to choose VALUE vs PRICE. Good partnerships will dominate- becuase they are able to scale (and operate) more efficiently than standalone competitors. Distribution is everything- becuase this is a volume game. CEOs who aren’t afraid to make the hard decisions will survive- becuase hard decisions will have to be made wether we like it or not, and how fast we respond to the facts in front of us could determine the survival of our companies.

Where’s the disconnect? Industry Insiders know that the highest THC percentage doesn’t always mean the best high, freshest flower, or highest quality. Yet, in stores, customers still gravitate towards the highest TAC numbers. How can we, as a community, turn this around? I think its starts with B2B, Cultivators and manufacturers need to change how we sell to stores. If we charge more for higher test results, they will do the same. Sorel Liqueur: The Ultimate Modifier Alcohol has a problem no one in the spirits industry talks about: alcohol doesn't taste good. This is by design. Taste (like most of our senses) doubles as a defensive mechanism: our body rejects things that are (or might be) poison. Pure alcohol, by definition, is poison: that's why every bottle of alcohol sold comes with a warning label; why it's a controlled substance. This has in no way diminished human desire to consume alcohol. Humans discovered the effects alcohol has on the body (both good and bad) and have spent thousands of years desperately trying to minimize the impact so we can enjoy the effect. Ancient Egyptians soaked botanicals in alcohol to make tinctures. The Celts began the practice of aging spirits in wood. Water, sugar, fruits; all things people have added over the millennia to make spirits more potable. Big liquor solves this problem by adding flavor to alcohol. This is why things like cinnamon flavored whiskey, blueberry flavored vodka, and jalapeño flavored tequila exist. At Sorel Liqueur we reverse the logic. Brand vs Commodity This is a conversation that's been happening at LCH for a couple years now, as well as the #cannabisindustry at large As the MI retail market began to struggle, margins compressed, and more retailers stopped paying their bills, we saw risk rising on the brand side Building a brand is expensive, it requires a sales team, marketing budget, and much, much more We took a hard look at our vertical model, and the commodity side seemed much more attractive It was a much leaner operation- no sales team, no marketing budget, no retail risk Selling bulk quantities to brands and processors made for large transactions paid COD Our solution was to scale up the commodity business and scale back the brand side So far it has proven to be a formula that's kept us in the black In the short term, it's proven to be the right decision Long term, only time will tell What are your thoughts on brand vs commodity as business models in #cannabis?

In the first quarter of 2024, with federal cannabis-reform efforts not yielding any practical changes, Curaleaf made a strategic decision to enter the hemp market. This is a trend we are starting to see. Cannabis can only be sold in the state it was produced and only allowed to be sold through dispensaries (in a hand full of states such as #california it could be sold through a delivery service). Intoxicating products that derived from hemp, are legal to ship across state lines, are available via e-commerce and mainstream retail channels. As well the producers of the products do not need to comply with burdensome licensing requirement and predatory taxation. A lot of politicians say that they support small businesses, but for small cannabis businesses to be able to properly compete, they need to have access to the same distribution channels as #hemp. F the Treaties: Rescheduling and Marijuana-Particular Controls https://lnkd.in/gwnhJv2Z <a href=""> - Marijuana-specific controls in schedule III? The drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) revealed its Discover of Proposed Rulemaking (“NOPR”) final week to a lot fanfare. The NOPR would reschedule marijuana, “marijuana extract” and “naturally derived delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinols” from schedule I to schedule III of the Managed Substances Act (CSA). However that’s not all. In my very fast evaluation after the rule dropped, I flagged DEA’s assertion that it might develop “marijuana-specific controls” together with rescheduling. I’m shocked this DEA assertion hasn’t spurred a lot dialogue, regardless of its Easter egg placement at NOPR web page 86. “Marijuana-specific management” guidelines might turn into a reasonably large deal. For context, the U.S. is a celebration to sure worldwide treaties that require it to regulate hashish and different drugs. Due to that obligation, the Division of Justice’s Workplace of Authorized Counsel (OLC), has suggested DEA that extra controls could also be wanted for marijuana on schedule III. That’s the best method to clarify it: if you need extra element on the whys and wherefores of the authorized regime and OLC’s rationale, go to pages 83-87 of the NOPR. In my publish final week, I highlighted that marijuana-specific controls could be thought of by DEA “concurrent with this rulemaking.” In different phrases, DEA is saying, “we’re taking a look at adopting new and particular guidelines for marijuana, past simply shifting it to schedule III. However we don’t know what these new and particular guidelines could be but. Keep tuned.” This strategy is artfully imprecise and noncommittal, and awkward, and begs examination. The trail to marijuana-specific controls I’m not an administrative legislation knowledgeable. Nonetheless, my understanding is that DEA could be required to note any proposed, marijuana-specific management guidelines within the Federal Register and open them up for remark. In different phrases, the method would mirror what we simply noticed with final week’s NOPR. If this occurs, it is going to be attention-grabbing to see what the “particular controls” guidelines present. To that finish, I’m not conscious of any such guidelines for different schedule III drugs. As a substitute, there are solely basic controls relevant to all schedule III drugs: e.g., sure storage necessities, allowances for paper or phone prescriptions, refill caps, and many others. None of that appears relevant to e.g. marijuana flower, which isn’t authorised by FDA for something. Alternatively, what might these guidelines probably say that might matter, particularly with respect to state marijuana packages? Would anybody, outdoors of scientists learning marijuana, pay any consideration to a DEA’s “particular controls” for sched...

Have you noticed another frustrating trend in the supplement industry lately? Servings are shrinking, but prices aren’t. Instead of 30 servings—a typical month’s supply—many products now offer only 20, 15, or even fewer. All the while, the price tag remains the same (or worse, it climbs). It makes me angry, not just as someone who values transparency and consistency, but also as a business owner in this space. The only reason to reduce servings in a product, is for retail purposes, as most natural food stores, want to conserve shelf space, other than that, there is no reason for it. It Devalues Consumer Trust When someone invests in a product, they’re buying more than ingredients—they’re buying into the promise of results. A product that runs out too soon forces customers to reorder prematurely or mix and match with other brands. This isn’t creating convenience or loyalty—it’s eroding trust. People are not stupid, cutting down servings sizes will just incentivize consumers to buy elsewhere and not from your brand. It Compromises Results Most supplements aren’t magic bullets; they require consistent use over time to show benefits. Cutting down servings disrupts this consistency and undermines a customer’s ability to stick with their goals. It feels less like a partnership and more like a cash grab. It’s an Illusion of Value Some brands market these smaller servings as “premium,” but what’s premium about paying more for less? It’s a tactic that leaves people confused, frustrated, and feeling shortchanged. At Swolverine, we refuse to follow this trend. Every product we make is designed to provide real, measurable value. We stand behind our servings, our pricing, and the promise of results—because cutting corners to pad profit margins isn’t the kind of business we want to run. Instead of wine, let’s look at craft cannabis vs craft beer, which holds 24.7% of total US beer market share at retail! This means craft cannabis will be the same? Right? Not really… At wholesale, (where they actually make their money) craft brewers only hold 13.3% of sales. In some ways, yes, there are models in this category that could be feasible for cannabis companies to follow, (Tilray thinks so…) But that’s the point….TILRAY is the #6 ‘craft brewing’ company in the country… Simply put, ‘craft cannabis’ doesn’t equate to ‘craft beer’. “Craft Brewers” are defined by the Brewers Association as: SMALL Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to a brewer according to rules of alternating proprietorships. INDEPENDENT Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer. So… you can own 3% of total national market share, and Anheuser Busch can own 25% of your company, and you’d still be considered a craft brewer. This includes companies like: Boston Beer Co. (2,793 employees), $2B in sales Sierra Nevada (1,050 employees), $320M in sales Tilray , (1,600 employees*), $152M in sales *includes cannabis employees One vital point being missed in the comparison between wine and beer and cannabis… we have to note that both wine and beer exist in complex supply chains, wher the grower of the grape very often may not bottle or brand (i.e.selling bulk), and where beer requires hops and barley, which are grown by farmers. So… who are the cultivators in this scenario? The brewers? Or are they barley farmers?

🍃🚀 What if the real game changer for your cannabis brand isn’t just your product but a smart B2B strategy that gets you into more stores? In 2020 I started working with a hemp brand.
