It is not about learning lines, you are not in a play. You are meant to be communicating something important to your audience. Know your message, understand what you want your audience to leave the presentation thinking and feeling. Being able to read your audience and adapt the content accordingly, changing the energy and the tone to fit is vital. Remember it is not about being perfect, no one relates to perfect (because its not real), make a mistake, fumble a word here or there, it does not matter. The connection to your audience, your authenticity and potential vulnerability are as important as what you are saying, because people will remember you for being a human being, not a robot. Remember it is not about you, its about them!

It is best not to focus on memorizing your material. Focus more on the message and the intent of the discussion. Use note cards to keep you on track during your presentation. Practice, practice, practice; knowing what you want to say will be top of mind when you begin your presentation. The effort put in before your presentation will serve you well.

Prepare, practice and pretend . . . you're talking to a friend about a new idea. Visualize yourself speaking and if you stumble keep going. Just a like a gymnast at the Olympics, they're trained to get up quickly after a fall and finish their routine.

Who is the audience? It is important to understand the makeup of the audience. Executives, engineers, sales, they need specific types of take aways. People miss the mark when presenting the wrong data or style to the wrong audience

I prepare for big presentations by scripting and reading my script at least 5 times. I refine it every time as I read it out loud. Typically after the 5th time I'm comfortable going off script looking at my visuals. I also keep my notes right next to me when it's go-time, just in case I forget what I want to say. That said, I rarely look at my notes after rehearsing 5+ times. Preparation is key!

Always know and be mindful of your purpose. You must have clarity on what and how you are presenting. Your wordings must be simple and free from ambiguity. Be focused and straight to the point.

In my experience, being clear on the subject is of paramount importance. The script should never be mugged up, however, it’s good to take note of the keywords. I think that a robust structure with clear transition between the chapters is the key to hold the attention of the audience. Considering the short attention span in todays world, the presenter should guide the people starting from the introduction until the conclusion with the help of a visiual scheme of the structure.

Spend a disproportionate amount of preparation and rehearsal time on your Opener and your Close. Structure your talk / presentation in bite-size-chunks. The humble 'pause'; pause frequently for you to breathe and gather your thoughts, and for your audience to process and digest what you've just delivered. Keep your talk short & Simple, finish on time, or ahead of time.

It also helps if you can structure your content in a manner that it tells a story and chalks out what you actually want to communicate. This eventually leads the viewers to the purpose as you build up the story through organization. Segmenting and sectioning the whole deck also brings more structure and organization to it. It helps the presenter to talk about topics more coherently and slide from one topic to the next smoothly, while also making it easier for the viewer to absorb and understand the information.

Try to start with a relatable quotation, be sure what you are willing to speak in public. Try to make pointers in your mind, practice those pointers in front of the mirror and know your expressions before giving any presentation. Complete each point with an example for a better connectivity. Once you are clear, it doesn't matter whether you have written the points on paper. Include questions in your presentation, as it seems more impactful. You can summarise the same on a positive note or leave the audience on a neutral note.

When you have clarity in your thoughts the presentation will be an easy sail. So now comes the question, how can I be prepared for the presentation!! The answer is simple, organize and structure your contents. How do you do that? By simply organising your thoughts. When you do that you will be able to prioritise your thoughts which in turn will help you in remembering the key aspects which needs to be delivered. You want your visual aids to aid the presentation not to take over the presentation. Keep it simple and if possible avoid words. Show images or pictures instead. Then your audience won’t try to read your slides when you are also talking. People try to put in as much as possible in a slide but that defeats the whole purpose of a presentation. If the slides are so good and complete, you don’t need to present. The best presentations to me are those that have little to no visual aids.

Embody the presentation. Never get into a presentation without the ability to deliver that presentation without any slides. To achieve this, you must do two things: 1. Audio recordings are very invaluable in aiding memory and preparing for an extemporaneous delivery. In presentations, always be ready for tech failures. Master your topic well enough to discuss it without visual aids. Keep notes or cue cards as backups. Learn to handle interruptions gracefully with pauses, humor, or restating points. Stay calm, positive, and adaptable. It's also important to have one backup plan for your presentation. because whenever you face a technical fault or error. that's a time when your backup plans are helping you to rectify. The backups are in handwritten notes and memorable short examples.

All of the information and suggestions provided are excellent. In terms of a backup plan…I wanted to share One pearl that has served me well with respect to virtual meetings. As many have previously said, technology can get in your way and not allow you to share your screen..etc What I learned from a mentor is to save your PPT presentation to a PDF and attach it to an email that you save as a draft. If and when technical difficulties arise..you can quickly pivot and ask who you can send it to on the call. They can open it up and share with the group which will allow you to still present. They’ll just have to give you a little help with the arrow button to advance:)

A good tip I find is to write 3 key words that you want to absolutely speak to at a meeting, on a blank piece of paper in front of you. Whatever you missed in your slides, you can be sure that ticking all 3 key items means that you got the core message across.

Having a backup plan is always important for any presentation and it usually starts at the preparation stage. If a person is more familiar with the topic then they can simply carry on and divert from the points written in slides and speak from their own experience on the topic without diverting from the core subject. Always thoroughly understand the subject on which to speak and have few examples memorised that can be quoted during presentation which makes it easier for participants to connect.

Expect the unexpected. If you handle a problem with grace and calm, the audience will understand. They know that things can go wrong.

And do so out loud. It makes all the difference 💪

Sometimes a mock practice helps as you discover that you may not have enough words to express a point which you otherwise thought would've been easy for you. It also helps you to stick to timelines.

Think like Lego Blocks, and you will never forget the words in your next presentation. Design your presentation following a clear outline. Each point should be coded — instead of by color, by a line. So if you are speaking for 20 min, with an intro, 3 main points, and closure — then you will have 5 lines to remember. Work on these lines so they essentialize every block and integrate with the next one. And the best part? If something happens, you don’t have to change your whole presentation — only a particular block!

Specifically, years of experience, education, and if possible personal characteristics. This will guide you to formulate your words, examples and any references you use, Knowing your audience needs, Supports you to communicate your experiences and conclusions.

Be confident enough in what you're presenting to not need “lines”, be natural and know what you're talking about. Focus on it being a conversation and less of a presentation.
