Have you ever recorded yourself doing a presentation? No never? That's the same as all the participants in my workshop. Diaorang pun sama None of them has ever seen themselves in action. So they dont know how they are on stage. They dont know what they sound like. Whether their voice has enough variation or just flat and monotonous. They don’t know if they have any filler words They don't know if they have any funny body movements on stage. Whether they look friendly or fierce on stage If you dont know what you are doing now then how can you even start improving? Macam mana nak diperbetulkan? That’s another skill for a manager Deciding when to step in when you see there is a problem Too early and you are not giving them time to solve it. They might even say you are interfering. My productivity is down 10% because one of my 10 fingers is out of action. I cut my thumb while rummaging inside my toiletries bag. Not a great idea when there is a new sharp razor inside Bila dah kena baru la tahu how important your thumb is. I can't type properly. I can't hold my tooth brush properly. It's hard trying to do my shirt and jeans buttons. It shows how important it is that all 10 fingers are functioning properly for maximum productivity. Similarly with your team, it is important that everyone is doing their part in order for the team to have maximum productivity. Last year my amazing admin Ain decided to leave and take advantage of the working-holiday visa in New Zealand and we really felt her absence during the transition period to the new also equally amazing admin Eli. So make sure that you give equal attention to all your team members because you need all of them for maximum productivity. Appraise the appraiser! In my 41 years career, I realised a few things when I look back at the journey so far. These situations keep repeating again and again in different Companies, different managements, in different parts of the world, the approach to them, makes all the difference between a top class company, a mediocre, an average, and a poor Company, here are the six Corporate Approaches to watch out for; 1. Practice what is preached, preach what is practiced.... No elaboration needed, your experiences will reveal what I say here. The importance of this cannot be overstated. I put on the wall behind me, we value collaboration, but do everything that destroys it, do we get results with that, never or at best average results. 2. For me it is blood, for you it is Tomato chutney... The inimitable comedian Vadivelu did this comedy in a tamil film. The point is that self centred we all are, but when we take the my way or high way route in everything my self interest is paramount, people stop having motivation, desire to excel, do not take initiative, morale plunges, team spirit collapses, people with-hold information, hide behind statistics, are afraid of speaking up, it's a never ending downward spiral! 3. I listen only to hear what I want to hear This one is an absolute beauty. People over a period of time since they are battered, shattered, humiliated for speaking up, speaking the truth, speaking things management does not like or wish to hear, stop speaking and start telling what management wants to hear. This is a sure recipe for disaster and many companies collapse or stagnate or somehow do not progress beyond a point! 4. Being Win-Lose in compensation management When you throw peanuts you get monkeys is an old statement. You assure them some package, bring them on board and slowly frustrate them by not giving them the band width or what was agreed, wear them down with temptations, but never ever give what they deserved, sure shot way to remove morale, creativity, energy and effective performance! 5. Use rumours, politics, insinuations to maintain supremacy Another time tested tactic which works, but with devastating consequences for both Company and employee. When fear overwhelms, where is the question of top class performance, people work to save their skin, so pedestrian output and results no matter whatever strategy is created! 6. Ethics what? Ethics, integrity, transparency, character is expected only from the employees, as regards management, how dare you ask them such questions, I will dismiss you. If you nod your head about this you understood what it is. In the long run this has impacted the fate of thousands of corporations and it's employees! What is your view?

My boss is a difficult person. Have you ever said that before? Have you thought about what you boss is saying about you? She might be saying YOU are a difficult person There are always 2 sides to a story. And when it comes to difficult working relationship, normally it’s because of a clash of personalities So what’s the easier solution? Ask your boss to change her way or you change your way? Of course la it is easier for you to change Does it mean kena tukar personality? No no no, that’s not what I mean. What I mean is adapting yourself to match more better with your boss For example, if your boss is a detailed person but you are not, then make the necessary adjustment to provide her with the details that she wants If your boss is more of an overview type of person, and you are a detailed person, don’t give her the reports with all the details that she doesn’t want If your boss is the driver type, who works very fast, and you are a detailed person who works quite slowly, then find ways to work faster to match her speed. You cannot control the angin of the interviewer. He might be having a bad day because he had a fight with his wife or his car broke down that day. But what you can control is to establish good rapport from the beginning. Good handshake with a big smile and some personalized small talk with him. You cannot control what questions the interviewer will ask. He might ask weird question like ‘when were you last happy’ or ‘do you eat durian?’ But what you can control is to make sure that you prepare your answers to the Top 10 most common interview questions. And that you rehearse the answers with a trusted friend You cannot control how the traffic will be that day on the way to the interview. There might be an accident on even freak heavy rain causing flooding But what you can control is setting off early to make sure that you have enough buffer incase any unexpected delay to your journey. I thought you might like to see this salary survey for C - suite employees. Clearly salary is a significant motivator when candidates consider new roles. But in my experience, they are also very interested in the science, they want to know about the culture of the organisation, the makeup of the team they will be joining and often they want to know about how the business is funded. Any of these can be a deal breaker when attracting top talent. Being a recruitment consultant is a bit like match making. It is really important to coach and nurture the candidate and the client in order to get the deal closed. Candidates will often ask me questions that they would never ask the client such as ‘do you trust them’, ‘what do you think of the hiring manager’ or ‘what do you think, would it suit me?’.# With clients I can have open conversations about the positives and negatives of a candidate because I do a first interview before sending in my recommendations. My Golden rules to be successful and also content in the workplace: 1. Having purpose. Not only as an individual but also in the workplace. 2. Understand and respect the culture in the workplace. 3. Be a team player. Sounds cliche but there’s more to the wording: team players are not only individuals that choose to add value to a specific project that is important to top management but add overall value to business. 4. Recognition is not just to get a salary increase or bonus. The value to give recognition to employees as an individuals are by far the most valuable asset. 5. Show respect to all. In turn you will be respected. 6. Trust your leaders. On the flip side, leaders in the business must always be transparent to earn the trust. 7. Have a mentor who can inspire you to become the best version of yourself.
