IHA’s Hospital Heroes program celebrates employees who have acted courageously or selflessly served their hospitals and communities throughout their careers. IHA presented 11 Hospital Heroes awards at its annual meeting. During a fierce blizzard, a team of professionals from UnityPoint Health and MercyOne came together to save the life of a 4-year-old girl from Bondurant. Recovering from heart surgery, the child faced a complication that required immediate transfer to Children's Nebraska in Omaha. Despite treacherous weather and the child’s fragile state, this team of six orchestrated a high-risk transport through meticulous planning, clear communication and unwavering dedication. The team successfully navigated the storm and delivered the child safely to Omaha, where she underwent lifesaving surgery. Today, thanks to their heroic efforts, the young girl is thriving and enjoying life with her family. https://lnkd.in/dcK75veD

Teaching complex topics in a fun & engaging way helps good nurses be great. Like how Courtney, clinical nurse leader, created a stroke escape room as a refresher course for colleagues. “To help new nurses become the nurses they want to be and have that support — it’s exactly what I’ve always wanted to do,” she says. Out of more than 29,000 team members, Courtney is one of three people recognized with a Luminary Award — a big way we like to honor our people and show them how much they matter. Dr. Rafael Serrano at UnityPoint Clinic Orthopedics recently completed a new ACL reconstruction procedure that was a first in the state of Iowa. The BEAR Implant allows the original tissue to heal instead of implanting a new, harvested ligament and helps patients recover faster. http://ms.spr.ly/6040oz3ju

“Jen was willing to step into a leadership role when her director was facing recurrent breast cancer. Despite her own pain and grief, she willingly said ‘yes,’ to honor her team and leader,“ says Jennifer Havens, Market President. Out of more than 29,000 team members, Jen, a therapy supervisor, is one of three people recognized with a Luminary Award — a big way we like to thank our people and show them how much they matter. Jen’s been a consistent source of comfort and strength for both her colleagues and patients. Her team says, “Jen will drop what she’s doing to be there as someone to talk to and as a friend to help many of us work through the emotions we’re going through.” 💙 Join a team who cares: https://lnkd.in/enjJQFYK

After being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing intense surgery, Gary and Rita’s adult son, Todd, reluctantly accepted that he needed additional support and moved back home. Having worked in home healthcare herself, Rita had high expectations for the team caring for her son. Expectations that Sadie, a registered nurse with UnityPoint at Home, exceeded. Sadie's warm personality quickly eased Todd's anxiety about receiving care for his wound and catheter. Her cheerful disposition and eagerness to help reassured the family they made the right choice in picking his care team. However, it wasn’t long after Sadie entered their lives that Todd’s wound healed, and care was no longer necessary. That was until a few months later, the family learned Todd's cancer had spread. Despite all efforts, nothing more could be done except to go home. However, this time, Sadie was no longer just a nurse coming into their home – she was a member of their family. Sadie remained by Todd’s side as his condition worsened, adjusting his care plan and medication to ensure he remained comfortable. Despite the immense pain of losing their son after a year-long battle with cancer, Todd's parents view Sadie as a blessing in their lives and are grateful for everything she did for their family.
