When I was a kid, family vacations weren’t complete without spending at least one day fishing. I grew up around anglers and learned the ropes from my dad, who was a true outdoorsman. Some of my favorite memories are of my family and me out on the water, finding peace and connection in the calm ripple of a line hitting the surface. That early introduction to fishing has been a constant throughout all of life’s changes. As I transitioned into the busyness of college and my career as a physical therapist, I found myself drawn back to the lake — away from screens and the usual rush. A few years ago, I was able to upgrade my kayak to a fishing boat, which has quickly become my mobile retreat. Now, I look forward to sharing this passion with my own children both on Madison’s lakes and during our annual family trip to Canada, just like my dad did with me. Fishing has also introduced me to an incredible community of anglers through the Yahara Fishing Club. Many of them have become lifelong friends. Over 20 years ago, a patient suggested I join – right away, I was hooked. Since then, I’ve served as a member, board member and now the outings coordinator. I organize events and “on-the-water" gatherings where we all join for a cookout before hitting the lake. One of my proudest roles has been leading our Kid’s Fishing Days – watching kids light up as they reel in their first fish is unbeatable, and we make sure they all leave with their own gear so they can keep exploring the lakes around them. A part of Yahara Fishing Club’s mission is to preserve Wisconsin’s waterways and introduce kids to fishing while respecting #conservation. We’ve been able to fund local scholarships for college students pursuing wildlife and water conservation majors and support projects that help make fishing a more accessible hobby for everyone, like handicap-accessible piers. Giving back to the lakes and rivers that have given us so much is one of the most rewarding parts of the club. For me, fishing isn’t just a hobby - it's a way of recharging, connecting with others and strengthening my community. Whether I’m volunteering with the Yahara Fishing Club or just heading out on the lake after work, fishing brings me back to what truly matters most. Jim Pankratz, Physical Therapist at UnityPoint Health – Meriter, shares how fishing has given him peace and connected him to his family and community in Our People, Their Stories. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Madison, Stephanie Barman, an OR nurse at UnityPoint Health – Meriter, felt a need to take action. Nervous about potential shortages, she turned to the sewing skills her mom taught her as a child, creating fabric masks and scrub hats for her fellow frontline team members. Stephanie found a community of like-minded creatives when she joined The Dane County Mask Makers, a group that supported each other virtually with donated fabric, troubleshooting and camaraderie in a time when they all felt disconnected. As pandemic restrictions eased and PPE became more accessible, the creative outlet and camaraderie of this project left a lasting impact on Stephanie and the entire OR team. “In the OR, scrub caps are one of the only ways to express your individuality since the rest of our uniforms are standardized and issued by the hospital,” Stephanie added. Spotting fabrics that reminded her of her teammates – whether it was a favorite sports team or a unique hobby – Stephanie began crafting scrub caps for her team that were personal and meaningful. Her efforts didn’t stop with the caps. Some team members who shared her passion for creating connected with Stephanie, and they began hosting craft nights outside of work, strengthening their bond as a team. “It’s brought so many of us together – we're a tight-knit group up here,” Stephanie added. “Getting your first Stephanie scrub cap is like being welcomed into the OR family.” Stephanie has streamlined her scrub-cap-making process, crafting the simpler designs in under 15 minutes with more intricate bouffant caps taking up to an hour. Her personal collection now includes over 200 caps, each showcasing her creativity and dedication. “I just love creating,” Stephanie said. “I don’t ever intend to make this a business - seeing a teammate light up when they see their cap is payment enough.” Join the family! Begin your fulfilling career journey with UnityPoint Health - Meriter at https://bit.ly/45rgxD8.
