I'm proud to celebrate Janna Allen Hines Consulting officially becoming a member the Halifax Chamber of Commerce! 🎉 🇨🇦 As a #newcomer to Canada, I have appreciated how genuinely welcoming and collaborative the business community has been in #Halifax. As a #DEI leader, I've really appreciated how the Chamber embodies its commitment to equity through its resources for marginalized small business owners and its robust programming. Thanks so much, Will Yang for the invitation and for including me in such a vibrant community of business leaders (and still throwing up the millennial peace sign with me ✌🏾 😂 ).

  • How many of you watched the #PresidentialDebate last night? 🙋🏾♀️ What are the chances someone at your office will likely talk about it? 🗣 Many workplace employers today will attempt to keep harmony by creating policies aimed at preventing discussion of politics in the workplace. But inevitably difficult conversations arise, and the worst thing a manager can do is ignore the situation and hope for the best. 🤞🏾 At Janna Allen Hines Consulting, we've developed a library of resources to help employees understand how to navigate difficult conversations in the workplace. One of those resources is our "BREAK" framework for quickly deescalating ourselves and thoughtfully responding to conflict. During this #election2024 season, I'm sure we'll all need to take a #BREAK at some point. Managers may not be able to keep political discourse from occurring, but you can prevent those conversations from undermining your team's ability to do their jobs effectively. For more info on our "BREAK" framework, and more resources for teams in the workplace, feel free to reach out. #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Consulting #Leadership #People #Culture #ConflictManagement

  • Summer 2024 has been filled with great work alongside great clients! Last month, we facilitated an impactful in-person DEI strategy session for Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. The session was designed to enhance collaboration between their business resource groups, DEI council, and executive sponsors, all aimed at advancing their shared diversity, equity, and inclusion goals for 2024. During the session, participants engaged in dynamic activities that fostered a deeper understanding of each other's roles and how best to collaborate on efforts towards their collective DEI objectives. It was inspiring to witness the thoughtful discussion and dedication as everyone worked together to forge stronger bonds and clearer pathways forward. As a result, participants left the session more aligned and equipped with actionable insights to sustain and enhance their collaborative efforts moving forward.  Thanks to Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines for choosing Janna Allen Hines Consulting as their partner in this journey towards a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace! #DEI #DiversityAndInclusion #ERGs #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Collaboration #Leadership #InclusiveCulture #Teamwork

  • Last week we had the incredible opportunity to facilitate an in-person training session with North Carolina Arts in Action! Our focus was on understanding the origins of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), starting with the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. When there's so much confusion & backlash towards DEI, we have to understand its original context of fighting segregation and discrimination in employment opportunity through the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Clarity is key for shared understanding. Participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions and hands-on activities, honing their communication skills to foster more inclusive and effective interactions. It was inspiring to see such enthusiasm and commitment to advancing DEI principles. Together, we're building more inclusive workplaces, one step at a time. Thank you, North Carolina Arts in Action, for your commitment to advancing DEI and for partnering with us on this journey! #DEI #CivilRights #InclusiveWorkplace #EffectiveCommunication #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #DEITraining

February has been flying by and filled with great opportunities to connect with other #DEI practitioners!  Earlier this month, I attended the first MFHA - The Multicultural Foodservice & Hospitality Alliance RoundTable for 2024 in Sandy Springs, GA. Thank you, Kofi Acquaah, for inviting me to the roundtable and introducing me to such a supportive community. (I’m still happy to help address your biases toward #Duke basketball fans for a discount! 🏀 😅 ) In a climate where DEI efforts are met with resistance, this session was a beacon of affirmation and empowerment. I'm filled with gratitude for the invaluable insights shared and the meaningful connections made. Meeting other DEI practitioners and hearing their stories was incredibly validating. It's through these conversations and collaborations that we can drive real change and create more inclusive environments for everyone.    #DEI #MFHA #ERGs #Gratitude

  • I'm still reflecting on my enlightening #MLKDay conversation with Eunice Makinde and two lessons from Dr. King to help us advance #DEI in the face of current attacks. 1️⃣ Be clear about where you are & what you're committed to. "All we say to America is, 'Be true to what you said on paper'...Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of the press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for rights." - MLK, "I've Been to the Mountaintop" Dr. King reminded the nation of its inclusive commitments outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Similarly, following the murder of #GeorgeFloyd, organizations made commitments to Black folks and #DEI. However, as Eunice mentioned, organizations weren't clear about where they REALLY were in their DEI journey and what they truly wanted to commit themselves to. Before writing another DEI statement, creating a recruitment strategy, or responding to the latest incident organizations must assess their current environment and what they actually support. 2️⃣ Take action holistically and systemically to embed DEI within your organization. “The third thing that we can say about this method (nonviolence) is that it directs its attack at systems of evil rather than individuals who may be caught up in the system. " - Dr. King’s “Justice Without Violence” lecture at Brandeis University In order to #DefendDEI in this current sociopolitical climate, we must move beyond programmatic activities to establishing the values of diversity, equity & inclusion as non-negotiable ways of being within our organizations. Ready to systemically embed #DEI within your organization & drive success? Reach out to us for a conversation!
