About us
The Health Anchors Learning Network is a UK-wide network for people responsible for, or interested in, anchor approaches in health. The network provides spaces and opportunities for participants to learn with peers and experts about how anchor organisations can consciously use their resources, influence and work in partnership to improve the social determinants of health and help reduce inequalities. The network is free and open for anyone to join. We have a growing network of colleagues from: - Health organisations (like trusts, hospitals, ICBs, Primary Care Networks, and more) - Local authorities - Anchor networks - Public agencies - Voluntary, community and social enterprise sector - Education - Housing organisations - And many more! The Health Anchors Learning Network is delivered by Innovation Unit and supported by the Health Foundation.

📣 New evidence brief: How health care organisations can reduce inequalities in social determinants of health in their role as anchor institutions In our new evidence brief, we discuss the most effective ways that health care organisations can maximise their local impact as anchor institutions and reduce inequalities in social determinants of health. In the current context of widening social and health inequalities and announced health care reforms, unlocking the potential of health care organisations as anchor institutions is key for building an NHS fit for the future. With a £22 billion increase in total health and social care revenue and capital funding, health care service leaders need to think differently about how the NHS can leverage its assets for the benefit of local communities. Our brief shows that health care organisations can reduce inequalities in social determinants of health for their local communities by: ✅ Working with local partners to achieve health equity. ✅ Purchasing locally from a diverse supply chain. ✅ Providing quality jobs and promoting workforce development and leadership. ✅ Transforming organisational spaces into community assets. This new research from Public Health Scotland highlights the transformative potential of CWB as a strategy for economic development - enabling communities to retain and benefit more from the wealth their local economies generate. Important work looking at health impact of Community Wealth building in Scotland. 'The Health Impact Assessment found that the successful implementation of CWB is likely to have a variety of positive impacts on health, including through addressing some of the fundamental causes of health inequalities. However, for these potential positive impacts on health and health determinants to be realised at population level, CWB needs to be implemented at sufficient scale. Positive health impacts may occur through multiple pathways, including: • Reducing poverty and income inequality • Reducing wealth inequality • Improving access to secure employment • Improving working conditions • Improving local environments and reducing environmental externalities • Improving access to spaces, facilities and amenities • Providing more people with a stake in their local economy and increasing personal sense of control • Enhancing community cohesion and resilience'
