📍 What’s a Living Wage Place? This place-based approach from The Living Wage Foundation aims to tackle in-work poverty by bringing together anchor institutions like councils, hospitals, and universities, with SMEs, grassroots groups, and the third sector to create a collective campaign to promote the real Living Wage in a local area - building inclusive economies and uplifting communities along the way. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has urged employers to embrace the real Living Wage, as part of the region’s fight against child poverty and low pay. Speaking at a Living Wage Week event in North Shields, the Mayor welcomed the new Living Wage rates, which will provide 9,500 low paid workers a pay rise by May 2025. The Mayor called on public sector employers, schools and colleges to lead by example and pay the Living Wage. Mayor Kim McGuinness said: “Put simply, there is a moral imperative to make the North East a living wage region. Obviously the Combined Authority I lead is fully behind the Living Wage goal. We pay the Living Wage, our new organisation will be accredited as such, and we work with our providers as much as possible to encourage them to as well. “But we know we have to go further, working with the Living Wage Foundation to bring households out of hardship. “The public sector obviously has a role to play in setting an example. That’s why I’m proud to back the call for our region’s schools and colleges to sign up to the Living Wage campaign. “When we set out to end child poverty, we can’t overlook the support staff, the cleaners and those who serve our children's dinners all play a role in providing the educational spaces that create opportunity. “And of course, many of those workers will be parents themselves, looking at their bank balance and wishing there was more to go around. We’ll find stories like that in public sector organisations all across the region. These are institutions that are committed to a better North East, that just need to go that little bit further internally to help get us there.” The North East has made significant progress in the last few years in tackling in-work poverty, find out more at https://orlo.uk/XPolf Living Wage Foundation #LivingWage #NorthEast

Moving living wage forward faster . Improving the lives of the most vulnerable among us — including those living in poverty — is an overarching theme across all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For many workers, a job does not provide a way out of poverty for them and their families. Ensuring that all workers are paid a living wage that enables them to meet their basic needs — supporting themselves and their families to a standard that is universally considered decent — is fundamental to ensuring a people-centered sustainability approach that leaves no one behind . A living wage or living income is the benchmark income level that allows people to enjoy a decent standard of living as stated in Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Today, more than a billion working people worldwide are estimated to earn less than they need to afford a decent standard of living, including sufficient food, water, housing, education, health care, transportation, clothing and other essential needs — an amount known as a living wage or income. These people make up approximately one-third of all workers covered by International Labour Organization (ILO) statistics and more than half of all small-scale farmers worldwide Read more :The action guides for the Forward Faster English : https://lnkd.in/gDEHUupK Thai : https://lnkd.in/gbHN9VaJ

Watching our provincial politics play political cards around highways and removals of bike lanes, spas and science centres - all the while ignoring and divesting in our health care and education systems has had our whole province's heads spinning. The Ford Government are not making our province more resilient to the next pandemic, climate change or fixing the housing crisis. We are further in debt than ever before and our housing crisis is only getting worse. For that matter, their work has been policies that are creating more sprawl and blaming the federal government for our affordability crisis. Last night I dreamt that our federal government mandated an updated minimum wage similar to that of Australia and I woke up thinking about how transformative that could be. A higher minimum wage, like Australia’s $24.70, wouldn’t just be a pay boost—it would be a lifeline for so many Ontarians struggling to keep up with the rising costs of housing, groceries, and childcare. It would mean fewer people having to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet, freeing up time for families to be together and for individuals to invest in their health and well-being, or spend time volunteering or in nature. With more money in people's pockets, people could afford to live closer to where they work, reducing commutes and improving work-life balance. It could also drive demand for local businesses and services, creating a ripple effect of economic growth. Australia’s economy is just fine and their quality of life is higher than here and there are other countries with higher minimum wages that show us that we can have thriving economies where people aren’t left behind. In Ontario, where affordability has become a daily struggle for so many, a living wage is key to helping people get ahead and building a more resilient, equitable province and country at large. I know that our incoming government won't see this as priority but we need to push our leaders to think how to pull our country ahead. It’s time we stopped playing politics with distractions and actually invest in our people of our province and all of Canada for that matter - We need to start focusing on policies that actually address affordability, health, and climate resilience. A fair wage is a great place to start. Imagine what life would look like if we prioritized people. https://lnkd.in/g4TjiXPD

We all want safe places to live, healthy food, good schools, reliable transportation, and the chance to help our families thrive. A safe, respectful workplace that pays fair wages is key to achieving this. But structural racism deeply embedded in the federal laws governing wages is denying that to more than 5 million hardworking service workers. The subminimum wage—just $2.13 per hour—is disproportionately harming people of color, single moms, and immigrants, who make up most of this workforce. In 43 states, it’s deepening economic inequality leaving underpaid workers and their families more likely to face poverty, hunger, and hardship. Ending the subminimum wage would be a big step toward economic justice and giving everyone a fair and just opportunity to thrive.
