GOVTECH AT THE CORE 🏛️ Reinventing #B2G as a viable (and yes, even exciting) model by truly understanding the #public sector. Diego Docavo, head of startups at Gobe Studio, shared the particularities of working with public administration as a client, leaving us with three #learnings: ❌ Expecting custom tenders tailored for individual companies. ✅ Opening up competition to include a wider range of companies. ❌ Viewing the public sector as an inaccessible "black box." ✅ Applying strategy and methodology to navigate and win contracts. ❌ Assuming the B2G market lacks profitability. ✅ Recognizing high customer value, if CAC is effectively managed. In 2024, family offices played a significant role in startup investments, with the top 10 family offices collectively making over 150 investments, focusing on sectors like biotech, energy, crypto, and artificial intelligence. CNBC, in partnership with FINTRX, analyzed these offices, revealing Maelstrom (Arthur Hayes' family office) as the most active, with 22 investments primarily in blockchain. Other top players include Motier Ventures, led by Guillaume Houzé, and Thiel Capital, led by Peter Thiel. AI emerged as a dominant investment theme, with 78% of family offices planning to invest in AI within the next 2-3 years. #CarbonBlue Climate-tech startup CarbonBlue announced that it has raised $10 million in a seed funding round, with proceeds to be used to scale up and deploy its water-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technology. Founded in 2022 in Israel, CarbonBlue provides technology to turn any water-based infrastructure into a CDR facility by removing CO2 from water, enabling it to absorb more from the atmosphere. The company’s solution takes water containing dissolved atmospheric CO2 and pumps it into a reactor which extracts the CO2, mineralizing it into solid limestone. Then, using heat, a second reactor removes CO2 from the limestone. The stream of pure, removed CO2 is then used as an industrial feedstock, or sequestered in geologic formation granting a tradable carbon credit by the ton, while the low-CO2 water is returned to its source, for the removal of CO2 from the environment. https://lnkd.in/gnGthxxP

Look no further—these firms are ready to write checks! 🔴 San Francisco based Initiate Ventures launched their debut $45M fund to focus on early-stage startups at the intersection of tech and life sciences. 🔴 Portugal based Bynd Ventures launched its third €40 million fund to invest in early stage technology startups in Portugal or Spain. 🔴 Warsaw based Cogito Capital Partners closed its €90M Cogito Fund II to focus on enterprise software, fintech and healthtech sectors. 🔴 Zurich based Founderful closed its $140M Fund II to support tech startups in Switzerland. 🔴 Luxembourg based Bek Ventures closed its third $250M fund to back early stage tech companies in Central and Eastern Europe. 🔴 Chicago based Chicago Ventures closed $80M between its CV Fund IV and CV Opportunity Fund. PitchBook: Fundraising for climate-tech companies is on the upswing in 2024, with fund value already on track to exceed numbers from 2023, according to our recent Emerging Tech Research. While 2022 marked a peak in climate-tech investment, the decline over the last two years is largely a part of wider VC deal trends and not necessarily indicative of the strength of climate tech itself. Eighteen climate funds have closed so far in 2024, with five exceeding $300 million each. Emerging firms still make up over half of VC climate-tech investors so far in 2024, though the ratio of experienced to emerging firms is becoming more balanced as new climate regulations see widespread acceptance.

Question. Who should we meet about climate hardware exits or more specifically M&A . We have IPOs and private secondaries pretty well covered, but happy to learn more. We’re now approaching 10x in climate investments since 2021 compared to cleantech 1.0. We’ve unfortunately repeated some of the mistakes and there are some signs that large bets will fail. But there are also some fast growing, even profitable climatetech startups. The problem is we don’t have many exits to confirm that this time is different. The last required step is to turn paper gains into cash. Unfortunately, as we learned about fundraising, the software playbook isn’t reusable because so many of the companies include hardware. So who has figured this out? Could be founders, investment bankers or folks who’ve led corp dev. Main specific qualification is they’ve worked on deals involving hardware or climate, or both. Over the last year, we have deployed 8 low-friction, synthetic development loans, the “Development SAFE,” to projects with significant climate and community impact. It’s like a reverse convertible note: an equity instrument that converts to debt at the CEO’s option once the project is fully funded and underway. Today ImpactAlpha is out with a story shining a light on this new tool, which we developed with Robert O'Connor of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. Amy Cortese dug in with Avra van der Zee to understand the backstory and why we created the D-SAFE. I like this part— “‘That’s the capital that’s very high risk, but very catalytic, because without it, projects don’t happen,’ Jason Salfi of Dimensional Energy, a New York-based startup that upcycles captured carbon into chemicals and aviation fuel, told ImpactAlpha. Dimensional is among the first climate tech startups to use a new development-specific instrument to scale the gap and get commercial plants off the ground. The Development-SAFE, a twist on the “simple agreement for equity” widely used in Silicon Valley, was created by Elemental Excelerator and law firm Wilson Sonsini to address the specific needs of startups developing their first pilot plants or commercial facilities.” Dimensional used the D-SAFE to unlock 20x more project funding from Seneca Holdings and others to finance its sustainable aviation fuel plant in upstate NY. And we’ve deployed D-SAFEs to accelerate FOAKs and project development for Fervo Energy with Tim Latimer, Forum Mobility with Matt LeDucq, Capture6 with Ethan Cohen-Cole, and more Elemental portfolio companies. Our goal is to have the dollars recycle back to us as soon as the projects get larger financing so that we can re-deploy capital for impact. I have a unique list of places to visit, ranging from natural landscapes to tech centers and research facilities. One place at the top of my list was the Sirius synchrotron light source in Campinas, Brazil, the second brightest in the world. I recommend you read this recent piece (https://lnkd.in/dcfucTcr) about Sirius, on how AI turbocharges the particle accelerator and green hydrogen in the capital of science. Reading the piece about Campinas, a city 100 km from São Paulo, reminded me of its remarkable tech-oriented and science-dense economy. Home to one of Brazil's top universities and numerous deep-tech companies with global ambitions, Campinas offers a unique blend of globally-minded tech entrepreneurship and world-class science. Big science projects like Sirius are essential for advancing knowledge and driving innovation. At the GFCC | The Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils, we highlighted this in the "Leveraging Extreme Innovation" report (https://bit.ly/3Wes9a5), analyzing 17 transformational tech projects worldwide, including Sirius. These projects push the boundaries of science, technology, and business, leading to market innovations. Sirius is part of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), a major science infrastructure with global relevance. Notably, CNPEM operates as a private non-profit, showcasing the importance of institutional innovation. Innovation in institutions is crucial for emerging nations, especially in Latin America. Hugo Resende, a favorite author of mine on LinkedIn, shares valuable insights on innovation. We agree on three key points (right, Hugo?) innovation is poorly understood in Brazil, it's primarily about business and the economy, not just science and technology, and Brazil needs to improve its business environment and modernize its institutions to foster innovation. Even operating under the Brazilian business environment and institutional constraints, CNPEM’s innovative model provides a template for what is possible to do in the country regarding science and technology, and even innovation. But real change will only happen when Brazil trains and empowers a globally-minded generation of Brazilians at scale. Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), a key player in training talent, has produced companies like the Nasdaq-listed CI&T showcasing successful examples of research-industry partnerships. Interestingly, CNPEM harbors ILUM (https://ilum.cnpem.br/), a highly innovative, project-based higher education program. Federal universities in Brazil need reinvention, and ILUM's innovative setup could serve as an inspiration. It reminds me of what my friend João Jornada achieved during his tenure at Inmetro, combining cutting-edge research with education, creating the opportunity for students to work with cutting-edge science tools, in globally relevant projects. When in Rome… write a blog Since changing the side of the table from entrepreneurship to VC I long resisted the established practice of content generation. After a year and sharing similar stories and tips with dozens of start-ups time to scale the approach   Time for Barbarians at the (Golden) Gate blog. This is a practical guide of scaling to the US by companies rooted in the CEE (Central and Eastern Europe). Loosely inspired by Booksy experience and discussion with leaders from other companies who are scaling successfully from the CEE    I start with structural advantages of CEE start-ups that make conquering global tech markets possible.
