🌍 AICEP President Ricardo Arroja participated yesterday at Web Summit Lisbon to present Portugal as a country committed to sustainable economic growth and technological innovation. During his intervention, he highlighted the essential role of collaboration between the public and private sectors in addressing global challenges and promoting the development of sustainable solutions for a more prosperous future. 🗣 Ricardo Arroja also underscored AICEP's significant geographical reach and strong engagement with Portuguese and foreign companies. He explored the fundamental role of public policies in attracting investment and identifying the sectors and technologies that require the Agency’s attention and support. Areas such as quantum technologies, biotech, advanced materials, and blockchain were highlighted as key examples of sectors AICEP actively supports, ensuring that the most promising technologies are identified and nurtured early. The AICEP President also emphasised the need to support and promote future technology. He stressed that Portugal must continue to focus on advancing emerging technologies to remain competitive in the global economy. The AICEP President further discussed the growing importance of capital markets in promoting sustainable investments and innovation, alongside the critical role of AICEP in helping Portuguese companies adapt to a rapidly changing global economic landscape. GOVTECH AT THE CORE 🏛️ Reinventing #B2G as a viable (and yes, even exciting) model by truly understanding the #public sector. Diego Docavo, head of startups at Gobe Studio, shared the particularities of working with public administration as a client, leaving us with three #learnings: ❌ Expecting custom tenders tailored for individual companies. ✅ Opening up competition to include a wider range of companies. ❌ Viewing the public sector as an inaccessible "black box." ✅ Applying strategy and methodology to navigate and win contracts. ❌ Assuming the B2G market lacks profitability. ✅ Recognizing high customer value, if CAC is effectively managed. Gobe Studio is doing phenomenal work by collaborating closely with public sector agents to create smoother processes for the #startup ec(h)osystem. 🇵🇹 🛑 🧮 🦄 This is a story about why in Portugal we must stop counting unicorns. Suspension of disbelief is critical for #startup success. We need to be bold in imagining and creating the future 🚀 However, imagination only produces fairy tales, to create true value we need execution. Getting millions in funding 💰 is an amazing tool to achieve growth 📈 Getting millions in funding is no success metric. 🙅‍♂️ Getting millions in funding to get thousands in revenue is the definition of a bad investment and a bad business. I challenge the 🇵🇹 #startup ecosystem and all its stakeholders to stop counting unicorns and start counting millions (of revenue). Read my opinion piece in Jornal Economico (in Portuguese)

Two weeks tomorrow we will be at Web Summit in Lisbon. We are exhibiting in the Alpha Startup section on the first day, Tuesday 12th November. This will mark the official start of our fundraising campaign. We will demonstrate the tech stack we have built, which is in the market, and show the new version 2 features, which are close to release.
