Change is in the air… after near 12 years of service to the board, members, investors, staff and partners of Australian Ethical Investment, today we announced my retirement as Non-Executive Director. I’m delighted to stay on as a member of the Australian Ethical Foundation board, helping to inform distribution of grants for game-changing benefits to people and planet, including through deep, strategic climate action. https://lnkd.in/gitjP4Xu The visionary people who established Australian Ethical in 1986 had the foresight to invest according to the principles of the Australian Ethical Charter which has withstood the test of time. From $3.8 million in assets under management at foundation, to $190 million by 2002 and around $500 million as I joined the board in 2013, generations of leaders have held true to investing ethically. As I retire, funds under management exceed $10 billion, and AE is recognised as one of Morningstar’s eight global ESG leaders (the only asset manager in Australia). It’s hard to imagine this ride: AE’s impact has scaled from being an exciting idea, to proving that it is truly possible to do good while doing well. The share price has grown from 20 cents when I joined the board in early 2013 to over $4 today. Over the past twelve months, the AE Australian Shares superannuation option has delivered 13.8% returns, and it is rated #1 for returns over the past 10 years according to SuperRatings SR50 Shares Index as of 30 June 2024. A real highlight has been that when I joined the board, the entire investment team was male - we now have a significant and growing female investment team cohort and our flagship Aussie equities fund is led by Portflio Manager Deana Mitchell: how good is that?? The people of AE are incredible. Huge thanks to STEVE GIBBS our Chairman and fellow Directors, Kate Greenhill , Julie Orr and Sandra McCullagh. Also to Phil Vernon who played a crucial role in setting up the business to scale, and the many who went before. Mega thanks to CEO John McMurdo who has built an exceptional team of awesome individuals who we trust for the next chapter of this amazing Australian Story! It has been an incredible ride and I look forward to remaining as an investor and super fund member, because - for sure - the best is yet to come!

As CEO of the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA), I was pleased to present at today's Parliamentary Inquiry into Local Government Funding and Services alongside Rhys Thomas - the VLGA's Head of Local Government Programs & Policy - on behalf of our members and the local government sector. As Victoria’s leading voice and support network for local councillors and councils, the VLGA highlighted to the Committee that local democracy and the close and accessible relationship that councils have with their municipalities is essential and requires a considered approach when it comes to state and federal government policy interventions at the local level. State governments have powers to change how local government work. However, if done without adequate consultation, the mechanisms for which are provided for in the Victorian State Local Government Agreement - the results may harm local communities and undermine the important role of local government. Victoria’s 79 local councils deliver close to 104 different services and programs to local community members on behalf of the state and federal government. Councils are best placed to deliver a wide range of essential services to the community because they are the most closely placed to listen to and respond to community needs. There is also a very real expectation by communities for local government to advocate on their behalf for better health outcomes in their community – considering diversity and inclusion, safe and affordable housing, changing climate conditions, the licensing of alcohol and gambling venues, and reconciliation efforts, amongst other issues. Councils have limited options for raising their own revenue, primarily through the payment of rates. Rates, together with user-pay charges, fines, and government grants, comprise the revenue base for delivering these services. They also collect revenue for other levels of government, such as waste and fire levies. Escalating CPI, interest rate increases and massive spikes in the cost of construction and utilities are all matters largely outside the control of councils. When combined with the lasting impact of COVID on council income streams and the increased expectations on local government through regulatory change and cost shifting, there are serious and very real concerns about financial sustainability in the sector. Finally, rate capping provides an artificial constraint on the quality of local council services, particularly in rural/regional areas and in fast-growing municipalities. As a result, councils may not be able to fund the community services, programs and infrastructure needed within their communities. However, the expectation from communities will be that services are still delivered – and the question remains – if not by local government – then by whom? While this fund should have a strong focus on the digital media literacy of young Australians, it should also fund initiatives aimed at improving the digital media literacy of other groups at risk of being taken in by mis- and disinformation, including older Australians and those in regional areas." How can we support organisations to prioritise effective Māori engagement and diverse community engagement in 2025? I’d love to hear your whakaaro while I’m home recuperating from COVID-19 round two. In the current economic climate, I’m seeing professional development budgets as a key hurdle for many people wanting to access inclusive communications and engagement training, with tools like AI being given the green light instead. And while I love AI, it won’t help you build effective, long-term relationships to grow your organisation and impact. So help a wāhine out (and the many other incredible facilitators in this space like Sel Leigh and Katerina Kupenga) as I plan for 2025… - What are your organisation’s development priorities for 2025? - What format suits you best for development sessions? Online, in-person, short, frequent sessions, half-day intensives? - How would it benefit your organisation’s leaders and communicators to understand more about connecting with Māori and diverse communities? Coming into a chair role in September this course was invaluable about really exploring and understanding and engaging with: - what is our members reality right now -what was it that didn't make them sticky? on boarding, mis-matched expectations, friction points, offerings. - what is keeping them up at night so we can support and help them -how can we be more specific with our way of supporting our members. - will AI be a factor and if so, how can we embrace it to make our profession more efficient. And the big one - we are always doing alot behind the scenes - but we very rarely convey WHAT we are doing to our members. It was strategy on steriods, and ONZ will be in a much better place strategically to move forward.

Only around 6% of Australian places are given their First Nation names on Wikipedia, along with an English one, according to research released today. As the authors note "If we are to navigate a world of digital saturation, it is crucial to understand how human beings play an important role in producing and maintaining digital infrastructure such as Wikipedia – and the subjective decisions they make along the way." On Thursday, the Business Council of Australia co-hosted a roundtable with The Australian Financial Review on how we can address housing shortfalls. Australia is facing a housing supply crisis and we need action from all levels of government on reforms that could inject more homes into the system. Business also has a role to play, and roundtables like these assist in identifying how reforms to zoning, approvals and supporting our education and migration systems can help tackle housing affordability. Thank you to Lendlease CEO Tony Lombardo, Stockland Managing Director CEO Tarun Gupta and Commonwealth Bank CEO Matt Comyn for their insights. The BCA’s ‘It’s time to say yes to housing’ report outlines 29 recommendations that could be applied across all levels of government to help address supply pressures. States and territories are already making some headway, but more work is needed and a good place to start would be looking at what’s already working in some jurisdictions and seeking to harmonise those successful approaches across the nation, to help keep the home ownership dream alive for the next generation. LINKEDIN SHORT SERIES So recently, I decided to start writing some short opinion pieces on certain aspects of management, public policy, reforms, innovations, brand management and so on, on this space. These are things I have gathered in my over a decade run in the private sector and public service (I am still gathering them, by the way). While some of them are divergent observations, others are a rehash of general practices, but with a touch of freshly fused flowery language. Creative repetition is always a good thing. It ingrains the facts without infusing the bland taste of ‘I’ve been there and done that’. Government Grant funding between $80,000 and $400,000 to support projects which prevent technology facilitated abuse of women. Projects should be focussed on the prevention of online harm and enhanced safety for women and children. For example projects may: - Aim to change community attitudes and behaviours, - Focus on the perpetrators of technology-facilitated abuse, or - Seek to protect and support women and children. Up to $600,000 of the total funding is allocated to organisations delivering projects that focus on prevention of tech-based abused of First Nations women. Eligible applicants must: - Hold an ABN. - Be registered for GST. - Have an Australian bank account. - Be a legal entity. - Be a non-government organisation, NFP or charitable organisation registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit commission. - Be financially viable. Eligible applicants for priority funding as a First Nations focussed project must: - Be an Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisation (ACCO), or - Be an organisation that is primarily focussed on achieving outcomes for First Nations communities, or - Be an organisation that is partnering with one of these eligible entities. NATSIHA’s pre-budget submission is a snapshot of what it really will take to start moving the dial on the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing emergency. We put forward a pathway which if agreed, will genuinely put our country on the right path to Close the Gap on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing. In short NATSIHA has asked for; ✅ $95 million over 3 years to fund the Joint Council Agreed Housing Sector Strengthening Plan. ✅ Ringfencing 22% of all current and future Housing and Homelessness investment to be used to adequately address the National Indigenous Housing Emergency. ✅ $1.4 billion over 10 years to support a Peak led roll out of maintenance and upgrades. ✅ $5 million to seed fund the development and best practice modelling of a 10-year business case for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing, Homelessness and enabling Infrastructure across all jurisdictions. It's been a devastating, exhausting month for survivors of violence and those working to address it.   The deaths of far too many women have broken our hearts and galvanised so many - communities, organisations, advocates, governments - to do everything we can to prevent violence against women.   People have taken to the streets of their cities and towns to say: enough is enough. A national cabinet has been convened, experts including victim survivors are coming together to talk solutions.   To drive down rates of violence urgently and into the future we need a diverse range of solutions to be actioned and we need to drive cultural and institutional change. We must make sure that when someone seeks crisis support or legal advice, they can access it.   When a woman and her children need emergency and longer term housing, it should be available. When a man needs to talk to someone about his behaviour, he should be able to access that professional guidance.  We need to ensure tailored and dedicated support for children and young people.   We need to hold industries that maintain harmful gender norms and promote violent or discriminatory behaviour - to account.   At the same time, we need to make sure that everyone is supported to learn about healthy relationships, consent and the warning signs of violence. That every single one of us is receiving the right messages, supports and information that we need to identify and prevent violence. Congratulations to Minister for Small Business Julie Collins for lifting the Federal Government's procurement targets for #smallbusiness. The targets now require SMEs to receive 25 per cent of all contracts under $1 billion from 1 July. That means small and medium enterprises will receive at least one-quarter of the annual $75 billion pie of contracts from government departments under new procurement rules.
