Over the last few months we have seen a big uplift in IRD compliance activity. With increased budget funding from last weeks budget announcement we expect to continue to see a big push from IRD on tackling overdue debt and tax compliance.

The newly elected CLP Government is delivering on its promise to keep Territorians safe with “posting and boasting” laws set to be passed in the first sittings of Parliament. Community safety is my government’s No.1 priority, and Territorians are right to expect that we will deliver on these new law and order measures as promised. The new “posting and boasting” offence will see a penalty of up to two years’ gaol. This will apply to any person who promotes a certain crime or criminal activity, such as violent offences, property damage, theft, stealing a motor vehicle, police pursuits and robbery, on social media platforms, including sharing criminal activity online, for the purpose of notoriety. This is about ensuring our laws act as a deterrent to committing crimes, that there are consequences, and offenders are held accountable for their actions. The new “posting and boasting” laws do not apply to people who post on social media to raise awareness of criminal activity, Territorians seeking information about a crime or to media reporting.

I can now add Awards Show Host of "The Trashies" to my resume 😄 As a Waste Minimisation Officer, I focus all of my attention on the community - whether that's schools, businesses, events, and more. So it's easy to forget that my own organisation, Taupō District Council, is part of that community (a big part, actually, with over 300 employees) and needs support as well. Last year, I conducted waste audits across 5 of our offices and the results were pretty upsetting. Some of our offices had diversion rates in the single digits. What does this mean? That some offices were only diverting, say, 7% of waste away from landfill. Over the year, I worked with a waste champion in each of our offices. We focused on easy wins. These included: - Implemeting Bokashi Bin composting for food waste - Removing under-desk bins and any stand-alone rubbish bins - Creating bin stations in communal areas to encourage waste sorting - Ensuring our waste collection contracts were providing us with fit-for-purpose services. (E.g. decrease the number of rubbish wheelie bins and swap them out for paper or comingled recycling bins) Now let's talk RESULTS! I did a second round of audits a year later and the changes were *BINspirational*! One of our offices who was only diverting 8% of waste last year is now diverting 47% 😵 And our single-use coffee cup use across the offices was HALVED from last year. Every single one of the audited offices is now actively composting their food scraps. So we decided to honour these changes in a (virtual) awards show called "The Trashies". We had categories for "Least SUCky" (SUC = single use cup so this office had the lowest number of these), Most Improved, and more. It was a great way to highlight progress and keep our staff engaged in the process. There is still a lot of room for improvement. There was still food and recycling ending up in the rubbish bin. There's still a massive reliance on single-use coffee cups. And the waste attributed to paper towels is still a massive problem. But I'm so proud of the progress we've made as an organisation in the last year. If we're not walking the walk, how do we expect anyone else to? In 2024, will the level of trust in New Zealand's central government exceed the OECD average of 39%, as reported in 2023, when 46% of New Zealanders had high or moderately high trust in their central government? Trust in our leaders is crucial because it ensures that concerns and risks related to the sustainability of our vital home and community health sector are not only heard but also adequately addressed with measures in place to prevent negative impacts on our most vulnerable.

Can we ignore the tax return due on November 30, 2024? Sometimes you may have exempt income, so do you still need to file a tax return? What are the advantages of filing by the due date? The Gunnedah Shire Council Draft 2024/25 Operational Plan and Fees & Charges are now on public exhibition. The Operational Plan details the works and services Council intends to undertake during the next financial year through responsible fiscal management of Council’s $56 million total operating expenditure and a capital works program of $25 million. “While Gunnedah Shire is in the enviable position of population growth, our Council is facing the same challenges local government is struggling with statewide and nationwide,” Gunnedah Shire Mayor Jamie Chaffey said. “The continued financial impacts of cost-shifting from the state and federal levels of government, unworkable rate pegs and increasing inflationary pressures are putting a burden on local government that is becoming unsustainable.” “Our budgeted financial position is being negatively impacted by these things, but we still need to meet the needs of a growing community and provide a multitude of services. In addition, we need to plan for the future to ensure Gunnedah Shire remains a great place to live and to do business. Gunnedah Shire Council, along with many councils across New South Wales, is actively exploring options to secure long-term financial sustainability, including efficiency reviews, project prioritisation and a possible Special Rate Variation application. This Operational Plan includes nearly $25 million of capital works, including progress towards the Gunnedah Koala Sanctuary and the continued recovery of the road network following the 2022 floods. “This is a time of challenge for local government, but this Operational Plan supports our long-term vision to build on the already attractive liveability of Gunnedah Shire, to retain future generations and attract new residents.” The Gunnedah Shire Council Draft Operational Plan 2024/25 and Draft Fees and Charges 2024/25 are on public exhibition until Thursday, June 13, 2024.
