Massive thanks to the entire BBB Wise Giving Alliance, in particular Elvia Castro and Lindsey (White) Dorritie, for hosting the Donor Trust & Participation conference today at the Ford Foundation. It was a day focused on looking at the giving crisis and what we need to do to build trust in our supporter communities. Here’s the bad news—donor decline is not just a US problem. It’s happening in other countries. What’s the thread that runs through all these countries? Not sure. Maybe the rise in social isolation? The fabric of our community groups is different now. No question. But here’s the good news, generosity is still strong but showing up in different ways—particularly through collective action. This doesn’t mean we put our head in the sand and hope this decline in volunteers and donors goes away. It requires a complete shift in how #nonprofits thinks about the “co-owners” of their mission. It requires rigorous and intentional impact reporting to convey to stakeholders that their investment is well used and the organization is doing good in the world. That’s why I believe in organizations like Wise Giving Alliance that helps charities ensure they meet the 20 standards that point to operational and programmatic excellence to be the engine to a mindset of philanthropy as generosity and not magical mega gifts that seemingly drop from the sky. I remain hopeful we can course correct the sector and will continue to shout on my soapbox. This was a thoughtful day focused on important topics and am grateful to have played a small part of it.
